I think this whole video out function of the new iPod will be available to all of the 4G iPods because of their new hardware by a cable that connects to the dock connector. The 60 GB iPod will have a color screen just for gimmicks and a taste of what a 5G iPod may bring. A color screen on the iPod is like when cell phones have color screens before the cell phones with camera came out: they're useless. You get a sharper image, better games, and small perks.

I agree.

That's a lot of iPods, man. I'm not sure if "impressive" or "scary" is the right word to describe it... ;)

I would like to think it's impressive. But I'm sure my wife leans more to the scary side:)
.....but she has loved every iPod she has had;)

My wife has always been impressed by mine as well, iPod that is ;). She still takes notice whenever I pull it, the iPod, out of it's sleeve ;). She is also in love with her personal iPod, 1G, my former iPod. Yet she has lately been eyeing mine, I am starting to fear for my iPod, looks like an upgrade is in the near future, can't wait to see what becomes of this rumor.

With regards to camera phones:
It is understandable that some people do not like them b/c they take low quality pics......but........for those of us who already carry around an iPod (with iTalk attached), headphones, cell phone, wallet, work pager, etc............carrying around my digital camera along with these other things is not always an option (and I always wear cargo pants). I want high quality pics too........but sometimes I just want a picture of something spontaneous (that didn't require planning to take my digital camera or video camera).....and this happens a lot when amongst friends. So a low-quality-phone-picture is better than no picture at all when you're wanting to remember something.

With regards to the rumored 60GB iPod:
I see no problem with this as long as it does NOT decrease ease of use and does NOT decrease battery life. They are not going to drastically increase the physical size of the iPod just for this feature (to anything bigger than what they've ever had an iPod sized at). I've had every gen of iPod and none of them have ever been too big to carry around. There will probably be a fair amount of people that would use the photo feature, but not a lot compared to the overall iPod user base (just an opinion)........but this function would definitely be acknowledged by all of the 'Reviewers' who have lots of people reading their reviews of products on a daily basis..........so lots of people would say "hey, you can store and view photos on an iPod too.....that's cool." This would definitely not hurt with those who do not own an iPod.

What I'd like to see:
Album Art. I have lots of music and quite a few of the musicians I listen to put a lot of time and effort into the artwork that accompanies their albums. Now that I have an iPod I never see this artwork....and really haven't in several years.
Lyrics. I would love for the lyrics to be able to scroll across my iPod while I am listening to a song. For me seeing lyrics while listening to a song equals a greater experience (even though I know most lyrics to songs I have).
Music Video. Maybe use this as an experiment to test the waters for video on an iPod. Dowloadable from iTunes in mpeg4(or useable by using iMovie, QT, FCP to format the movies and an 'export/share to ipod' feature from these apps). You could make the file sizes smaller than DVD quality for now since they are playing on an iPod screen. The videos are quick so you do not need your entire battery to watch one. If this works out they could then try and implement feature length movies. By then there could be larger hd's in the iPods and there could be (or should be) faster internet access and more availability (areas) for people to access faster internet so that they could download such large files. Also allowing video out. (it would also be fun/cheesy to have an entire library of past/present Apple commercials to watch or show others:) ) I understand that watching videos on a small screen is not as enjoyable (as a TV or my PowerBook), but it could still be enjoyable. There are plenty of everyday circumstances that I am put in that would allow me to kill 10 minutes (or more if at the doctors office) watching a music video. So while it is not perfect it could still be fun.
Wireless Enabled (Airvideo/Airfilms/AirMac/Airdisplay?). Kind of like Airtunes but for video, photos, and computer usage. My iMac hd is 250GB and I'm going to get an ext FWHD soon.....so I'll always have a lot more room to store movie files on my computer than my iPod. It would be great to send those files to my iPod that is docked with my TV and watch a movie off of the computer (which I do with my PowerBook already via Airport Extreme from my iMac). Also you could mirror your computer display (which is in another room) onto a TV and control your computer via a bluetooth mouse/keyboard while relaxing in your living room (not having to be at the desk or have a computer near you).
DVR. If the iPod can receive a wireless signal then let it send a wireless signal back to the computer. If your watching a television show have the iPod docked and recording the show (to sync to a computer later) or streaming it to another computer that is recording it. I record way too much Aqua Teen, Sealab, History Channel, Discover Channel, ESPN Classic programming. It would be nice to have an easy way to transfer this to my Mac to back it up. (I only have 10 hours left out of 100 on my DVR box)

I've had lots of iPods and completely understand the loyalist approach that an 'iPod is for music, lets keep it that way'. But if this rumored 60GB photo iPod is true then Apple obviously is not seeing it that way (or perhaps will keep a line of iPods that are more or less for music only). So if they are going to expand on the functionality of an iPod, I'd like to see them go all out:)

That's all that maters then. I know my girlfriend was the same way before I introduced her to the world of Apple. She wasn't too sure about using my Mac, getting an iPod ("They are so expensive!" ;)), but then once I showed her the light, she since loves my Mac and REALLY loves our iPod. Hmm, I wonder if she's with me for me, or for my Mac gear... ;)

That's exactly how it happened here. I found myself looking for my iPod alot at home and it ended up being wherever my wife was b/c she was listening to it. My 1G 5GB went to my wife when I bought a 2G 10GB. I then sold mine and bought a 2G 20GB (refurb). We then sold my wifes and bought her a 2G 10GB (refurb). My wife was working 40hours a week running a small not-for-profit family organization and at the same time getting her Masters Degree (did it in 5 semesters -
one of them the summer)......so as a gift I upgraded her iPod to a 3G 20GB (refurb) b/c she liked how sleek the design was when they introduced them. I then sold mine and upgraded to a 3G 40GB(refurb) (which I'd have to say is the iPod I liked the least out of all of these). Then when they introduced the 4G iPods I sold both of our iPods and we bought a 4G 40GB and a Blue mini. Both of these are great! We can fit all of our favorites on the mini and everything on the 4G.
The MacRumors forums have helped me in not spending a lot every time I upgrade. Keeping up with iPod rumors (and Mac rumors) allows me to plan ahead and have my iPod or Mac ready to sell when their is an upgrade coming out that I'd like to move to. I can be ready to quickly put it on eBay and have it sold before most people know that the iPod or recently (the iMac) have been upgraded. This way I can still get a good price for what I sale......better than what I would get if I had tried selling the item well after a new product upgrade is released by Apple.

I don't think you have to worry about that. Women are not like that unless you have a huge bank account ;)

... they'll continue with their practice of not allowing the consumer the option of a wireless keyboard and mouse with their computer purchase.

On both the G5 iMac and PMac lines, Apple does allow a BTO combo of BT/key/mouse to replace the standard wired key/mouse combo. The price of $99 is pretty favorably weighed against the separate costs of BT module ($50), BT keyboard ($69), and BT mouse ($69). Of course, the mouse is still of the single button variety.

EDIT: For $99, buy the combo, sell the BT mouse on eBay for $40-50, then buy whichever BT mouse your heart desires.

OOOOooops!!! My BAD! Thanks for setting me straight... $99 for Bluetooth Module, wireless Keyboard, wireless Mouse -- that's a bargain. Sorry, Apple and sorry Mac Community!

Also, Thanks powermac666, for not calling me a Big Dummy... it really was an honest mistake.

has anyone ever thought of lobbying against Apple. If this rumour proves to be true it is in direct conflict with public statements made by Apple. For those that bought the 4th gen on the assurances of Apple that they would not be producing a 60gb this is a stab in the back. I hope this rumour proves to be false or else I have a strong urge to sue the liars.

Greg Joswiak said, back in July, they had no plans to introduce a 60GB iPod. Maybe now they do have plans. I am not aware of any assurances that they would never make one, which is hardly surprising as more and better technology becomes available.

Also, if Apple did decide not to make one soon, how exactly does that improve life for those who currently have a 4G ?

You are most welcome?
It's a sure sign that the tension level on the boards is high when someone thanks you for not heaping on them when they pull a little oops. :)

We need some new products to talk about, or at least more good rumors....

at least you know the cause. just rub on some ointment and you'll be good to go. :D

and what ointment would that be, Ego-b-Gone?? the only reason we still don't have useful mice is b/c steve thinks it's a "failure of design" to need more than one button on a mouse. yes, it's much easier to reach up and press the control key w/ my other hand.

Just bought 4G/40GB

Hi...I just purchased my 4G/40 on 10/1 so I'm within my 14 day return period. Purchased from the Apple Store with AppleCare. It has, of course, been opened and used. I would LOVE to have color and photo capability of the rumored 60G iPod.

Questions: can I return it to the Apple Store for a credit? Will I have to pay 10% re-stocking fee for a credit? Would you all do likewise?

Thanks for your advice!

Yes, Toshiba has announced their own player, but that doesn't mean they won't provide drives to anyone else. (They stand to make more money by doing so.)

PS, you know a rumor is out of hand when it appears on the top of CNN's main home page AND gets a photo on their tech home page:

But Apple has to keep up and not rest on its haunches. Virgin announced a 5gb player today for $249 (http://www.virginelectronics.com/is...__YN7LWU4_1_a1WJb7dVxyn04=?ProductSku=VM-0500.) And its not the prettiest thing, but its lighter than the mini and has an FM radio. And it clearly states in their description "25% more space than 4gb"

Thats why I can't understand all the negative feedback over these color screen and photo capabilities. If Apple wants to stay on top, they have to keep innovating and evolving. There are a lot of companies with more money than Apple who are going to try to take some of the iPods market - and the more Apple keeps improving its features - whether they are useful to you as an individual or not - the more chance the iPod has to stay on top.

It looks like Toshiba is keeping the 60gb drives for themselves :( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/12/preview_tosh_giga_60gb/

Not necessarily. Even though they are coming out with their own player that does not mean the are going to stop supplying Apple with micro-drives, 60 GB or otherwise. Apple will no doubt continue to purchase 20 GB and 40 GB drives from them, and will also add the 60 GB to their purchase orders as well...

I wouldn’t say easier – just “as easy”, actually. Your one hand is on the mouse, the other hand is on the keyboard. Instead of clicking a button with your one hand (the right mouse button), click a button with your other hand (the Ctrl key). See, now was that so hard? It’s the same thing really.

Yah, having to hit keys on the keyboard is a real big hassle – it’s a wonder how these MacRumors posts even get typed sometimes with all that awkward key-pressing...

On the record comment?

Hi,
I'm writing a story on the video screen rumors for TechNewsWorld and I'm hoping someone will comment on the record about what they think of this and the likelihood of its being true.
Thanks,
Susan
