64GB iPhone 4 Prototype Leaked from FoxConn

Earlier today photos of a possible prototype 64GB iPhone were posted to MICGadget. At the time, the site wasn't sure if the prototype was real or if it was a clever counterfeit. MICGadget has since gotten access to the device and believes it to be real:

Apparently, this 64GB iPhone 4 is not for sale in grey markets of Hong Kong. The owner of this engineered prototype told us that he got it from a source who has a small quantity of these prototypes. They are definitely leaked from Foxconn’s factory in Shenzhen. What’s more, according to the owner, he believes that the next iPhone will bring 64GB storage capacity to users. Well, we think Apple is planning to update the iPhone 4 with small upgrades, at least featuring a new 64GB model.

The device shares many physical characteristics of the "lost" Gizmodo iPhone 4 which was also labeled with "XXGB" on the back. Other shared findings include no "+" or "-" markings on the volume switches and no silver ring around the lens.

This engineering prototype reportedly leaked directly from Apple's manufacturing partner FoxConn. Apple presently ships only 16GB and 32GB models of the iPhone 4, and has never shipped a 64GB model. The device owner seems to think Apple may introduce a 64GB model for the next iPhone. Apple, of course, may have made any number of different engineering prototypes of the iPhone 4 but it may or may not indicate their future plans for mass production.

Apple decided to scrap the 64GB iPhone 4 so they could introduce that storage capacity with the iPhone 5. iPhone 4 was already a big change from the 3GS so no need to also include this. At least that is what I think.

There's no way they're adding a GB of memory. They'll possibly bump it to 1 GB of memory, if not 768.

Doubtful IMHO. Look at the signal strength bar and FW. Its pretty old. If a prototype, I would think it would be running current FW or a special build that Apple has been known to use in the past.

Apple has a habit of doubling things. I don't see them changing that, which going to 768 MB would do. based on their history, the next logical stop is 1 GB.

It probably would have raised production costs a bit and since there was already a bunch of new features in the iPhone 4 apple most likely chose to scrap the 64gb model and wait for the price to drop.

If they're just starting and want to do preliminary testing you might use the stock OS version number that's a build made specific for that model

This is plausible. With the recent switch to 25nm flash from 34nm, Apple can fit twice the flash in the same area for roughly the same price (slightly more expensive). So its definitely possible if Apple chooses so. I'm inclined to think that all the "iPad 3" hype for September is really just a refreshed iPad with twice the flash memory (32, 64, 128GB capacities) for the same prices.

Side note, I can maybe see an updated RAM to 768 MB, but not 1 GB just yet. All in all my bet lies still at the 512 MB mark.

Cheaper Phone?

Could this be the plan for Apple's version to a cheaper iPhone 5?

16 and 32 GB now go to 32 and 64 GB. for $199.00 and $299.00

Meanwhile, 16 GB is now the cheaper phone, priced say $99.00... and 8 GB for $49.00...

All from the same update... that is, all new iPhone 5 models.

iPhone 4 gets relegated to $29.00... to give Apple a better chance at staving off the cheapo Android models and BOGOF stuff.

Its hard to say, they might. However, if history is our guide, we know that Apple uses special firmware like this when testing out prototypes.

I think its an iPhone 4 64 GB engineering sample / proof of concept, not an iPhone 5.

iPhone 2 would be the 3G and iPhone 3 the 3GS? If so you left out the iPhone 3GS 32GB...which I have, and 64GB would be fantastic in iPhone 5...

The pink sheet shows that it is a repair store. not the Foxconn’s factory. the SMC is in Taiwan, right?

Also, I agree this is probably an old prototype, the 5 better have at least 64 if not 128 and some serious speed upgrades if not a whole new body style.
