I personally think that the next iPod touch will be based on the A7 architecture due to the move to 64bit in 2013. The iPod touch should have an A7 with more than 1GB RAM though for iOS 8

Some things i would like to be in the new Itouch:

The new A7 chip used in the new Iphones. Why? Because the A5 chip in the current model is out of date, and with IOS 8 in fall of 2014, we may see a performance decrease if Apple keeps it.

Agreed

4.7'' Retina touch screen. Why? Although a 4'' screen is nice, but its falling behind with most mobile tech. The keyboard is cramped, especialy in portrait mode, and reading news articles and books can be a challenge in the small screen.
I don't really think it's falling behind. I love the 4" and would keep it that way. Do you have evidence that it's falling "behind."

3Mp Facetime Camera. Why? Have you noticed when using Facetime on your Facetime camera your face looks tall and streched out? And photos sometimes come out grainy? With better optics, more Mp, and better camera options, your Facetime camera would be perfect. And who doesnt like taking pictures of your self?

Maybe even 8MP :D

Gorilla Glass. Why? Although it wont protect against every drop, it will make a difference for sure. Almost everyone i know who has an ipod touch of any kind has had its screen shatter for sometimes silly reasons. Give it Gorilla Glass so it wont be as fragile as it is now. I brace for the worse when i drop my 5th gen ipod, its silly.

Yes :D

3G/4G models. Why? Today, the ipod is almost COMPLETELY dependent on Wifi. Wanna play your Clash Of Clans in the car driving for hours? Nope. Want to update and make documents for your company while on the go? Nope. Want to Shazam that awesome song by Robin Thicke you just heard on the radio? NOPE! Come on Apple, lets step up the game.

It's an iPod for a reason... Wouldn't you have an iPhone as well?

64-bit has been roundly criticized due to lack of necessity and lack of current apps.

It will take off in the future, but the iPT can weather life without it through another revision. THEN they will have to upgrade it to an A7.

If the A7 isn't a necessity, Apple will favor savings. A6, unless they wham up the price and dump in a useless A7.

Meh, at this point all I'm hoping for is that they will release an 6th gen (if at all) with a bigger screen, more memory, and a better camera, without letting the sound quality drop. I don't know how many times I've been tempted by android devices with huge screens.

It's almost certain all of those will happen and that there will be another iPod Touch released. The Shuffle/classic/nano devices are now all stuck in their form and tech; the nano has a small chance of being revised.

Your glimpses toward Android devices pinpoint a severe problem is Apple's post-Jobs management. They seem to believe 2-year cycles for prominent devices can be tolerated. Unfortunately, they are deluded. Technology, much of it designed and sold by Apple, is moving so fast and updating yearly--to let slide any part of the Apple line-up is suicide.

The A chips are always expanded yearly. The ATV and iPod Touch should match that with upgrades. Likewise the Macmini and MacPro and displays should be yearly updates if only to add small feature which liven up the line and make people feel they are getting current technology that will last for many years.

It is frustrating to be as far as 6 months out from an update to the product which has had no serious upgrades in 18 months.

4th gen iPod touch-A4
2 years later 5th gen when the iPhone had A6-got A5.
6th gen- most likely a slightly customised A6.

The A7 is most definitely not useles. It blows away the A6 on terms of performance.

Yeah. iPhone 4 on iOS 6 dies.

Nope. The 6th gen will have an A7, will be 32GB and 64GB only, have 1GB RAM, and will be the larger 4.6 inch form factor of the iPhone 6. It will be announced in September 2014.

iPod Touch?
For the price of one iPod touch, you can buy a previous generation, non-Apple smart phone, with:
- More RAM
- Faster CPU/GPU
- More storage space and/or options
- GPS (if you need it)
- standard 16:9 HD screen (1280x720 pixel)
- FLAC & MKV support
...and so on.

The iPod touch is a waste of time and money.

I hope we get to see a resurrection of iPod touch
I hope not.

Bookmark it and thank me in September :).

1GB is certain but not the A7. If iPhone gets a bigger screen then the ipod will surly follow. I agree with everything you said except the A7, rest of it is bang on.

Could you honestly name one device? I'm genuinely interested.

Apple is heading towards 64 bits in all their products. The next major Touch redesign after fall 2014 will not be until fall 2016 so they will want to use an A7 now. The iPhone 6 will be an A8 and they are putting an A7 in the 6th gen Touch.

I'm not sure what the difference is but I have never heard anyone with an IPT 5 say they have issues running IOS 7 on it.

I've seen the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air stutter with iOS 7. I think maybe those people who have an iPod Touch 5 just don't notice or care much about UI lag as I do. I'm not too sure. My friend has a Galaxy Note and he doesn't mind the stuttery UI. That's his prerogative.

Wrong. S3 retails for $399 plus applicable taxes. iPod touch starts at $299. If you don't want a rear camera then the iPod starts at $229.

I would say Moto G, Xiaomi Hungmi...

- Same iPhone 6 SCREEN SIZE
- 8 MB Camera
- A6 chip :"-( the will not put an A7 chip
- thy may increase the battery a little bit..
- increase WiFi speed
- iOS 8

They won't, it's the first entry point for a lot of teens and pre teens into the iOS ecosystem. The iPhone was a major success because it was targetted to a huge group of iPod users.

Perfectly sound logic, but apple seemingly does not care about this approach any longer - see the weaksauce Mac Mini as well. Both lag far behind the "upgraded" models. These are supposed to be a taste of the Mac ecosystem, not week old stale bread.

They run perfectly well, and are still have certain best in class features. Way too good for what they cost.
Like iMac 22 or Macbook Retina/Air don't have upgradeable RAM, but Mac mini does.
Same goes for iPhone, it's still thicker and heavier than the iPod Touch.

It will have an A7.

I concur. This fall, the 6th gen touch will absolutely have an A7 chip. After a year of fabricating the A7 chip, the price difference between it and an A-series chip one year older will be almost negligible.
