What makes is more iPhone than iPad? Looks pretty iPad-y to me.

forgetting the mock-up picture, I think they are saying when they say it will be more iPhone-ish than iPad is the obvious visible differences:

the iPhone is more rectangular (different frame) and has a different backing than the iPad.

edit: i guess more like a pocketbook (or Kindle 3) dimension

That is the first question everyone probably asks.
Everyone with any intelligence.

A guess: cheaper price for more market?

A sub-$499 iPad would be nice, but look at the price of iPods. If the iPod Touch had dropped down to $149 or lower for a low-end intro model, I could expect the small iPad to be lowering down into the $299+ area, the full iPad going for $499+.

However, this product makes no sense: smaller, possible retina display but smaller battery, less space for extras. Weird, if true. Based on the age of this rumor, it could be happening.

Not necessarily true. A 7" iPad could start at $299 or $349 for 16GB, $379 or $399 for a 32GB, and $479 or $499 for a 64GB model. At the same time I would expect the current iPad to either drop the 16GB model and go $499 for 32GB and $599 for 64GB to avoid being not worth it compared to the 7" model or possibly keeping the 16GB model at $429. Regardless of the introduction of a 7" model, the prices/storage capacities will either see a change pre-holiday or more likely next spring when iPad 2.0 comes out. The only reason I say next spring is that iPad sales are so strong right now and supply is constrained enough that they don't really need a pre-holiday price drop to drive holiday sales. But expect a slight Black Friday discount on iPads to move some product.

I've said all along that I thought a smaller iPad didn't make sense...until I saw the video of the Galaxy Tab yesterday. I really like that size.

That being said, I love the size of my iPad, and given the choice between the two, I'll stick with the full blown one.

And all that being said, I still just don't see Apple introducing another iPad product into its line. They pitched the the iPad as filling the gap between iPhone and MacBook. It's tough to believe that they'll introduce another product to fill the gap between iPhone and iPad.

This picture is an obvious fake. Look at the Home button. It is always the same size on all iOS devices, yet on this 7" iPad it is smaller, just like they simply scaled the entire image of the current iPad. Its a FAKE!

Well said. They actually scaled down the same image of the 9.7" iPad under the supposed 7" iPad.

The iPad already has so much market fragmentation: 3 memory sizes and 3G or WiFi-only. That's 6 different SKUs. Now they're going to add at least 2-3 more with variants for a 7" iPad and different memory configurations? If anything, Apple needs to consolidate a little bit.

I really love the iPad as it is now - though having the forward facing camera would be nice to have. I'm not sure I'd have any interest in a 7" iPad model. If it's to go after the eReader market, I get it. That said, I use my current iPad to read and to read to my son. The weight doesn't seem like that big of an issue.

I'll definitely be keeping tuned it!

I hear ya. I suppose a 7 inch tablet makes as much sense as a 13" laptop does compared to a 17" laptop - more portability with equal functionality (just not as powerful in the laptop case). A 7 inch tablet will be easier to carry around in a small bag, backpack pocket or jacket pocket, maybe even something you can take to a game or event, who knows. I just like the fact that Apple will have something to go up against Dell - that guy's a tool. In any case, since tablet computers are about to explode, I'm sure we'll see all sorts of sizes out there, typically from ~7" to 11"-12". Kinda makes sense for each manufacturer to offer 2-3 sizes in the long run..just like laptops (and iPods).

Sometimes though, I can't help but feel that apple suffers from product identity crisis. I mean, c'mon, almost every device now can do the exact same thing. Should I get an iPhone 4, Ipod Touch or iPad mini? Decisions, decisions. It may drive some nuts!

ah but when does a smaller iPad become a larger iPod Touch?

When they call it it

i-poad

And don't people say :

Size doesn't matter it's the motion in the ocean?

And didn't Eve give Adam an Apple and that's why we are no longer in paradise? (I smell a possible commercial )

Sooooo many questions:)

Wonder if it will have retina display and camera?
I'm not sure if display suppliers could provide enough Retina Display parts for the anticipated production numbers. Also, it's probably still too expensive as a part. Most likely, we will not see Retina Displays on the iPad for a couple more years, until part availability improves and prices drop.

The camera is a strong possibility as Apple now has FaceTime running on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Wide screen

If Apple goes with this smaller ipad they should make the form factor more rectangular so they can incorporate a 16-9 wide screen display with their retina display. Watching movies on it would be awesome. And put a camera in it too.

I always said apple should have made a smaller size as an option. I've held the ipad in my hands and can't seem to get a feel for it, In fact I've drop it once at a friends house. Thank god he had carpet. Hopefully will get a smaller, thinner ipad with camera & faster processor. You can count me in if we do. :D

I hope it will have the cameras found in the iPhone. That would differentiate it from the iPod Touch. A 7 inch iPad would be great for international travel - small enough to conveniently pack around, big enough to to get some real work done.

Anyone who thinks this will have a retina display is being massively optimistic. The cost of such a high resolution display would be prohibitive, not to mention no one is making anything close to it.

I don't consider the iPad itself all that useful but it's nice to have so you don't have to strain your eyes on an iPod Touch and it's probably nice for older people. That's really the only benefit I can think of for the iPad and now that they're shrinking it, really makes it seem pointless.

This doesn't make sense to me. Could you try to express clearly what you are trying to say? You seem to ask whether a 7" iPad would be an N92 - I have no idea what an N92 is, but an iPad is an iPad and an N92 is not an iPad. An N92, whatever it is, is also not an iPhone. iPad and iPhone are Apple products, and Apple does't make an N92 (why is Apple the only company giving their products names instead of stupid codes? )

Gnasher - Reports (Daring Fireball has a good roundup) say engineering verification tests are ongoing for an apple device with the n92 code. Previous iphones, prior to release, had n91, n90, etc. I can't recall if the ipad, during testing, had one of these codes.

So what I am asking is if the apple device showing up in testing as n92 is not the iphone, but a smaller ipad.

Really??? I thought this was a real photograph of an 7" iPad. Thank you for setting us straight!

N92 is apparently Apples internal codename for the rumored.CDMA capable iPhone. The poster was suggesting that N92 might not be a CDMA capable iPhone, but instead this 7"iPad.

I can see it now.

"Sorry sir, you must go home and get your 9.7" iPad for your flight to Chicago today. Your 7" iPad is for international travel only." :D

Today is just full of fail...

WOWHOLYCRAPREALLY!? The last time it was up it said mockup, and this time... It says mockup.

Maybe it will be cheaper.

No. Way. I personally think the 7 inch iPad will be $200 more than the 9.7 inch iPad.

Those NXX codes ARE from Apple regarding their products in code. N91 / N90 / etc have all been iDevices. N92 has been around for a while, but it's never come out as to what it is.

I love when people post what they think is the truth, as the actual truth, without actually giving any time to find out if that's even true.

A 7" inch iPad makes perfect sense to me: I consider the current iPad too large and too heavy.

Unfortunately, it's unlikely that we are going to see a 7" iPad soon: maybe it's a finished product but for the time being I am quite sure that Apple will keep it in the drawer.

Apple is now selling about 2 million iPads per month, and until there is strong demand for the current model, they are not going to release a cheaper version, since this will have an impact on the sales of the 9,7" iPad.

I think that we will see the 7" version only when the demand for the current model will start to decline.

The main problem with the current iPad form factor is that it cannot be held with one hand. So it cannot be used in a lot of situations like standing in a bus. It is also too heavy to be used as a book reader for an extended time period (something that Amazon capitalizes on in their Kindle commercials).

7" iPad address both of these issues quite nicely, and opens up the iPad for a whole new category of perspective customers.. The ones that are currently attracted to Galaxy Tab.

I say - good move Apple. I may even buy one myself, if this turns true.
