I really don't think so Apple would be blurring to many lines with this.... Plus pricing would be to tuff it could only be wedged at 399 because 100 $ more and you have a bigger iPad 100 $ less you have the most expensive iPod touch. Factor in 3G pricing as well as capacity pricing unless it comes in 1 capacity which I doubt. Apple would be stomping all over there current pricing scale, as it is the most expensive 3G iPad is a hard sell for a student when you get a discount on the lowest end MacBook.

This picture is an obvious fake. Look at the Home button. It is always the same size on all iOS devices, yet on this 7" iPad it is smaller, just like they simply scaled the entire image of the current iPad. Its a FAKE!

Nicely spotted, my friend. It's been so long since we've had a good debunking around here. :D

Edit: Doh! Just noticed it's a mock-up. Oh well.

BIGGER!!! I want a 12-13". Only way I can justify it. Significantly bigger than my iPhone and I could eliminate my Macbook. Why make it smaller, closer to the iPhone, I don't get it:confused:

Ever consider that some people might actually want this size? Even though it's not for you (or me, I'm happy with my current iPad), I'm sure something in between an iPod Touch and the current sized iPad would be very appealing to a lot of people. Haven't you seen the pics of the chap with the Samsung Galaxy in his back pocket?

as long as it doesn't replace the current size. The current size is perfect (for me, of course) to browse web pages and read comic books (nerd alert). With a 7" I'd have to pinch and zoom to read the panels.

Agreed. They might even move the current iPad up to 10 or 11".

I think the Galaxy Tab might be a better product considering the ipad didn't even have a print function when it came out.

I don't know how much the Galaxy Tab is going to cost in the US, but in Europe at €699, it's dead even before being released.

Samsung would be able to sell it only if much cheaper than the iPad, at this price it's going to be a failure.

Businesses would do better with a scanning attachment and probably an iPod touch. I'd rather take pictures with a camera or an iPhone than something as large as an iPad. In fact I'd implement a feature where you could send a photo from the iPhone to the iPad in one press.

You don't need a camera for augmented reality apps when looking at the stars, the camera would hardly pick anything up anyway.

And I would rather take a picture with a real camera than something as crappy as a cellphone camera.. So maybe iPhone shouldn't have a camera either then, eh? The point is - the iPad is a highly integrated device, so WHY NOT include a camera for all those times where we may not drag along all those other devices and need to snap a quick picture? It costs Apple nothing (maybe a couple of bucks per unit) to add it to the iPad.

It would be useful on the rare occasion, I just don't see it being a worthwhile addition at all.

And I am very glad you are not in charge of iPad product decisions ;)

I think it has a market.
Cheaper, more portable and still with a bigger screen than an iphone. I think the current ipad is not as portable as it could be. The goal might be to make something you take without thinking (like your phone or keys). The ipads I see are relegated to couch duty or laptop replacement at a meeting. I haven't seen any that are carried around all the time/used in public/etc etc like I imagined Apple wanted.

Remember the Gizmodo article where the author carried it around at the museum and read it at the coffee shop? IMO It looked wholly impractical and silly, needed its own bag, and made it look like you were working or something, what with its clipboard size.

I'd get one at 7". Good compromise between my iPhone4 and the current iPad size. Slap a retina display on it with facetime and where do I pay.

Wonder if it will have retina display and camera?

Personally I think it's too expensive to implement across the board, and will take at least a few years before you see it in an iPad.

Front-facing camera is extremely likely in the next revision, and there's a good chance there will be a rear-facing camera too.

Does the current iPad have stereo sound? Does anyone think the iPad will gain speakers in multiple areas, or will it continue to be just the bottom-right grille on the underside of the current iPad?

This is a very smart move by Apple. If they can get them out before the holidays, the sales will be astronomical. If not, they will still sell them as fast as they are built.

The 7" size is perfect for frequent flyers and others like myself that travel extensively with a MacBook Pro, or other laptop. My original iPad ends up staying at home, which is not bad, but not as flexible as being able to use it both on the road and at home. I can use an extra anyway, so I'll be making this purchase as soon as they are released.

Easy. Current iPad is too big to be truly portable and the screen on the iPhone/touch is too small for aging eyes.

I think the new Samsung Tab looks a tiny bit too big to be truly pocketable. I think Apple will choose to go with 960x640 on a 6" screen. Add the an option to buy no-contract 3G data (just like the iPad) and I'll be first in line. I don't even need a camera, but having the one from the iPhone 4 would be awesome and would cause me to buy a second one for my wife.

I want an iPad so big that I can hang it on the side of my house and watch movies with my neighbors.

I gotta say that I like the iPhone 4 design more than the iPad design. The iPad design is really "boring" .

I like the iPhone 4's design as much as anyone, but has anyone thought of the amount of glass that would be needed to make that design for the ipad? even a seven inch ipad would probably be too much glass.

So,

by "more iPhone like", I am taking that to mean that it will have a more uniform thickness, and rectangular edges, without the radius taper.

For a smaller footprint device, I can see why they might want more real-estate in interior volume. Hopefully it will also allow for the iPhone 4's cameras, and full cadre of sensors.

I also would wonder, like others have mentioned, if the 9.5 inch form factor would give rise to something closer to an 11" diagonal screen, like the larger netbooks, and smaller full laptops, but still in iPad's tablet format, and iOS environment.

I was thinking the other day... in a year or two, I wonder if we'll be seeing iPads with cameras being used as bar-code readers (or even optical recognition of a product directly), and a magnetic/RFID attachment, in some shops, instead of cash registers. Maybe along with a base-docking-station cash-drawer and receipt printer (for those who insist on paper, rather than receiving a receipt by e-mail or text message, or something.) the docking station could also serve as the software sync, and charging, if not induction charged by then.

An iPad software sync server could handle data management, and even multiple users. Swipe a magnetic card, or rfid tag through the card reader, and the iPad is loaded with a profile for a specific employee, and tracks their transactions separately from other employees.

I could see where there might be a use for extremely portable 7" form factor, as well as other desire for larger 9.5-12" diagonal screen real-estate, with perhaps slightly less ultimate size efficiency.

In terms of flexibility, the ipad is pretty poor, no SD/expandable media, no camera, Apple could learn a few lessons. But I guess as long as their customers are willing to go for 'magic' over function, that really isn't going to happen soon.

Given the Galaxy Tab isn't even released yet, I find it laughable you use it to compare to a shipping product. Conjure up more imaginary products and we can both have a laugh about what's magic. :p

First of all, Apple HAS to release a 7" to compete with the Samsung, Dell and other upcoming 7" tablets.

Second, many people (like me) would prefer a 7" over the 10".

Thirdly, Apple can NOT release an updated 10" so soon or it will have 15 million iPad owners whining instantly.

Lastly, I expect the price to be about the same as the 10" ($499.95). It might be as low as $399.95, but I doubt it. Apple can justify the price since it will have a better quality display (Retina, OLED or AMOLED), at least one camera (probably front for Facetime), 512 RAM, gyroscope, and etc.

It almost makes me think Apple deliberately crippled the 10" from the start anticipating the 7" release.
No camera and only 256 RAM in the 10"!???! What a rip off!

Imaginary? It's been demo'd IFA, been reviewed and handled by every tech site and it's even on pre-release on Amazon! I get that people here will defend Apple to the hilt, but acting as if this product doesn't exist is ludicrous!

My point was that Apple have form for releasing products with less functionality of competitors, and hide behind marketing hype and brand loyalty. Whilst it's true that their interface design is superior to most, that shouldn't mean that the rest of the product is compromised.

When they finally get around to adding the functions which their competitors have had for years, they act like they invented it, after previously denying demand or need in their previous model.
