We're all amateurs and Apple has professionals making these decisions. But it doesn't stop us from making lots of noise!

Some of the noise is great stuff man. Just gotta get through all the rest!

You can try this sample size calculator there : http://www.raosoft.com/samplesize.html

With a population of 5 million, an margin of error of 5% and confidence level of 95% the minimum sample size would be 385. Surveys typically target 3% of margin of error, which would bring the minimum sample size to 1067.

So yeah, this sample is way too small to be used as a headline like this.
Thanks for the link on that. So with a 95% confidence interval and assuming (conservatively) that Apple sells a couple million iPads this weekend, that's a 12% margin of error.

But that's of course assuming that their sample of 71 people was truly random. Something tells me you're almost certainly right that the guy sent an intern down to the local store to ask people walking out over the space of an hour or three, so it was anything but--it was probably in a single geographic location, only counted physical sales, and was probably time-constrained on top of it.

Which is to say it's not so much a statistic as a large-sample anecdote.

An unrelated aside, after seeing how ridiculously crashy Facebook in Safari is on my mom's 1st gen iPad and realizing how big the weight difference will be, I decided an Air would make a great Christmas gift for her. Which does make her a "repeat buyer" according to this survey methodology, although I'm not going to stand in line or be in any particular rush to get it, and of course the people commenting on this site are at a large statistical bias to either be existing iPad owners who are unusually likely to be early adopters/upgraders, or people who seem to have nothing better to do but post on Apple rumor sites about everything that is wrong with Apple and/or those who like its products.

Whilst one plausible way of looking at it is (neglecting the tiny sample size) that the market's becoming saturated, I'd offer that this revision is one of the more compelling ones. I liked the iPad 3, with that magnificent display, but didn't feel compelled to migrate at that time.

Similarly, the iPad 4 was a nice bump, but still, my iPad 1 worked fine.

Here, though, I saw an iPad that was evidently the future baseline - 64-bit architecture's where the next round of devices to be dropped will be found - and one third lighter. Add in the overall CPU throughput, GPU improvements, and returning to current iOS offerings - it wasn't a difficult sell. ^_^

So, another factor might well be that this revision finally lures out the reluctant upgraders.

Well, I do like the size and weight reduction, but if they don't do something with this stupid UI or something drastically cool with iPad6, I doubt they'll get another 850 bucks from me next year. My iPad collection is nothing but an annual revenue stream for Apple that leaves me wondering why I upgraded. Flash on the camera? A better camera, if you're going to have one? A non homoclown UI? I don't know. Something. I've seen more "meh" in the geek circles around here with this release than when we were all climbing over each other to get 4.

Apple's notes app was a deal breaker for you? Wow. I think I could deal with that and probably find something better in the App Store.

If I don't love it, I don't buy it. Now if you would like to gift an iPad Air to me I would most graciously accept ;)

----------

Just download another notes app for gods sake.

I know you're not speaking to me :)

You should try the "App Store", it's a store where you can buy all sorts of apps like games, tools, productivity apps including alternatives to "Notes" - like "Evernote" for example. I'm sure there will be some sort of app where you can set the background to "Forestall post-it yellow" if required. Good luck.

Please give me the name of the notes app with "Forestall legal pad yellow". I would love that!

I had Evernote. Deleted it. I use Notes extensively. My most used iOS apps are Mail, Safari, Notes in that order. Notes is very handy for my use.

Evernote kills every other note app out there

I am very happy with the stock Notes app on my iPad and MBA. Eventually I'll need to upgrade hardware then I'll use what they provide. Until then I'm enjoying Notes, old school.

My girlfriend has iPad 1 and I have the first retina iPad (3?). Not upgrading anytime soon. All those upgrades seem to be incredibly boring and bring nothing new to the table unless your iPad is way too slow for things you do.

Uh... lighter weight (thin but strong) is the new black. And it's not just a cosmetic thing (although love that ad w/ the pencil).

The weight makes a big difference. It's huge. The weight of the first MBA also made a difference. That was (and is) huge as well.

Only if the developer doesn't come up with lots of different apps. If they just have one app that they rely on for revenue, then that's kind of limiting themselves to begin with.
Having only one or 50.000 apps doesn't change the fact that apps can be installed on an unlimited number of devices using the same AppStore account. Clearly Apple expanding their market reach would be more favorable to developers than Apple just upgrading their installed based with the latest hardware. And for fremium apps, it really doesn't matter if customers keep their 2 generations old iPad/iPhone or upgrade to a new device. So nothing to win with the new iPad models.

I wonder what happened back in the days of "computers", where I bought a new computer and put the same software on it? I must be remembering that wrong... I probably just re-purchased the software.

Maybe back then there wasn't any software... ?

That must be it.

Developers have direct access to a wider audience of users than EVER before in computing history. Before embarking on a development endeavor for the purpose of making money, you should understand your potential audience, projected sales, and plan for monetizing future releases (Office, anyone)? Developers did just fine on the Mac platform when Apple was selling a couple hundred thousand units a quarter and all they could do was advertise in magazines.

To think that this will have any impact on a developer in the iOS space is silly.

If a retina display isn't enough to make you consider upgrading, you'll likely be rocking that iPad 2 forever. In a device like a tablet where the display is 90% of the experience, I can't imagine what else you would want Apple to focus on.

I have a retina iPhone 5 and MBP. While it is nice on the iPad it's just not enough to say Hey I should go get that.

I suppose everybody is different, but I was disappointed with my iPad 2. Magazines took up more space than I anticipated, so the 16 GB was no good. The screen was just Ok, but not great after having the iPhone 4's Retina for 8 months. Using it on the road was tough, always hunting for Wi-Fi. The body was fairly light, but too indiscreet for my taste and with sharp corners.

Having said all that, I'm going to give it another shot. An iPad Mini with Retina display, 32 GB, and free T-Mobile data should address every one of those complaints :)

I got 16GB for mine and I have yet to utilize all my space. I also got it with ATT. Screen didn't bother me until I got my iPhone 4 many moons ago. This is my in-betweener device. I use it when I'm not at my Mac and when my phone is not in my pocket. Which is a rare occurrence. Thus why I haven't felt the need to buy any newer iPads I'm a basic iPad user when it comes to this device. The rest of my devices I use for lots of things. Not only that I wanted a gold Touch ID iPad and it didn't happen.

----------

I got two this morning. My partner was surprised that it wasn't much heavier than his mini and preferred the size much more.

----------

Sorry this one isn't up to your high expectations. It's an incredible machine.

Why are you on these forums again?

Unfortunately not this time around. I can see why Apple still sells it. It handles iOS 7 fairly well. I still get great battery life. Maybe next year :)

Don't overlook the average upgrade of the iPad user as 24m. 30+ months for other devices. Yes, new customers are the most important. However, 10's of millions of consumers simply upgrading to a new iPad every 1-2 years is a consistent source of revenue. Which of course is what it's all about. ;)

I have just replaced my third gen iPad with Air also.
(And I am replying on it)
Lighter weight and faster speed is a strong reason for me.
But what the strongest reason for me is just...that my old iPad got no space left:p
(The old one is 16G. So I got 32G this time)

I have an Ipad 2 and when Ipad 3 came out, the retina display was a world of difference, so I got one. Now that Ipad Air is here, I ordered one because it is faster and lighter. We love the products, but I also enjoy their quality and durability. My wife uses the Ipad 2 and loves it (she loves the Ipod 5 even more). These Apple products are made to last, and if you take good care of them, they will last indeed.

Played with it at Apple today. Very impressive. I would have brought one home if the Notes app was easier on the eyes. The harsh bright white background of Notes was the dealbreaker.

I'm not a huge iOS 7 fan but I could definitely use it if Notes was the old style. I sent feedback to Apple suggesting it be considered as an accessibility option. Not real hopeful but nothing to lose.

The iPad Air is really something. Check it out.

If only there were a million alternative note-taking applications to experiment with, and they had way more functionality than Apple's Notes app.

I bought the 128GB Air today, after checking it out at the store. I've been using a mini and have loved the size and weight, but the new Air is sooooo much lighter and just better in the hand (even one hand) than the older full-sized iPads, I decided to go back to the larger screen for this generation. Even though I'll now need to buy another Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover, oh well, heheh.

It's sooooo nice. :D

iPad Air my bottom!

Lets just take a step back here because I tell ya; I'm a full blown Apple fanboi but even I'm not drinking the coolAid this time around!

We all know about touchID, we all know it fits perfectly in the home button, has support in the A7 on board die. There is ABSOLUTLEY NO REASON this could not have been incorporated in the air this time around.

I know everyone says it, and frankly I'm tired of hearing it but in this case i truly beleive if Steve had been around he would have insisted that the next version of the iPad would have had touchID alongside the 5s.

Apple, you can stuff your iPad air sales until you predictably release the NEXT version like you should have this time around with TouchID included!

I'm afraid this stinks of 'dragging things out' and I absolutley hate to say it but after 15 years of Apple ownership I'm afraid it's now impossible to ignore

"the rot is in! "

The suits and shareholders have taken overriding control and this ***** gonna get worse!

I'll never get tired of hearing it. There is a reason people say it so often. I miss Steve's Apple. Unfortunately he's gone. Apple is different. There is no going back.

Ok.

Did the development and sales terms change when the iPad Air came out? Did you stop selling apps? Last time I checked, apps tied to a user ID have always been the case. All of a sudden it's an issue? Good for Apple, bad for developers? More like good for consumers, sort of bad for developers, if you're greedy. You're assuming that every person that owns an iPad and bought a new iPad already owned your app which would be incorrect.

There is opportunity everywhere to sell your app. When you hit 100% market share than you can complain about how you've been slighted.

I didnt say it was bad for developers I assume there will be a slight boost but its much better for developers when devices reach new hands.

I love my iPad 2. But none of the iPads after it have been worthy enough for me to upgrade to.

Only reason I upgraded my iPad 1 was retina :)

The new one is a lot lighter though.
