If your going to make us wait, Mr. Apple man, throw a quad chip in the 24" Imac and the 17" MacBook Pro... rant... rant...

Give the people what they want!!!!

If you want to complain about no quad core macbook pros complain to intel. there are no quad core chips for notebooks

I don't get it. I'm as hungry as anyone for new stuff from Apple, but why is everyone so excited about the potential change to eight cores? Most applications don't even use two. Plus, Intel had to lower the clock speed to fit four cores on the chip. So, single-thread performance will be down.

Certainly, there are people that have a need for increasing the number of procs, but it appears that most of the "anxious" posters just want eight cores because A) more is supposed to be better and B) they want Apple to announce something, anything. In the case of A, I want an 11 core MacPro.

Now, there are certainly some areas where the MacPro could be improved. So, the updated chips may include other updates.

However, I'm more anxious for Adobe and MS to release their UBs so that I can upgrade from the G5.

I'm pretty sure it's B. I know it is for me. I'll never buy one, and I don't even think they'll be faster for the vast majority of users, but we just need some sign of life from apple.

For me, it's time to upgrade to the latest and greatest (last time was three years ago with the top end G5 of the time) because I CAN use the 8 cores for 3D rendering in Cinema 4D. I could get a Quad MacPro today, and that will render 2.5x faster than my G5, but there is little point if Apple is on the verge of releasing a machine even 50% faster!

Adam (getting tired of the lack of proper (ie: Mac) updates from Apple.)

I think that it is B also. Right now most people do not run programs that can even use all of the current quad core processors, I would prefer a mac Mini update or at least a price drop if they want to keep it one processor revision behind.

It's mid-March and the only thing Apple has shipped in 2007 is Airport Extreme N. Wow! That's gonna be some quarter! Guess the delays never were about PPC chips at all.

Where are the new mother-f*cking Macs?!!!!

What aren't we all supposed to be happy with the iPhone, come on Apple it is cool but it is not that cool. It is getting kind of tired.

Ordered a Mac Pro today

My big proposal at work was approved, and there was only enough
coin to get me a 2.66, so I took it. I am still hoping to pick up a
3.0 Xeon refurb AFTER this next generation is announced for the hizouse.

not to post a downer - but...

why would you buy now!?

the next gen chip using the new materials is coming from intel (first change in 30 years)

and the new chip will have CSI and more transitors and probably more cache along with the caneland platform...

so why get outdated SOOOO quickly? Oct or November will see these new tigertons - new processes, upgraded bandwidth between chips (CSI) and the new motherboard to boot... IT'S WORTH THE WAIT PEOPLE...

Already Exists...

While it's nice to know that the octa-Pro is on its way, an existing Quad (2 x 2.66 GHz 'Woodcrest') was opened up and a couple of 'Clovertown' prototypes were put in, and it worked just fine (the processor activity software showed all eight cores showed up). The only problem is that the machine didn't know what the processor's name was :).

The last thing I was waiting for before getting my quad was knowing I had an upgrade path someday. However, with a street price of over $1k per processor, memory price (currently considering a re-fi to fiil up my Quad) would be the last of my worries :(

Really, though, the Pro is an exquisite piece of engineering. Added another 500GB WD HD last night and it took a couple of mintues. Already put in a second (LightScribe) optical drive and will get another drive in a couple of weeks. According to the anandtech article, though, processor transplants are almost as complex as brain surgery, so I presume that Apple didn't intend on this being a 'desired' upgrade path.

So these tigertons will be way better than a potential Octo-core coming by NAB?

Wait 'til November? No Way Dr. Gruv

Wait 'til November? You can't be serious. That's a whole 'nother life cycle. We can sell the first gen 8 core if what you predict really pans out so super much better. But there's no way any of us who need an 8 core Mac Pro now are going to wait for Rev.2.

No Frickin' Way.

IT'S WORTH THE WAIT PEOPLE...
No it's not worth the wait (YMMV) .

I've got 4 hi-def commercials due for delivery by the middle of June.
I've been getting by with what I have, but time is up. I need something sooner rather than later.

If at the end of the year something is significantly better, I'll buy that.
You have to take the leap somewhere.
I've been waiting to take the leap since around August last year.
I don't throw money away, but I do try to make informed purchases.

I will not buy a new machine prior to the 8-core, though.

also, you can always sell your Octo-core later to get these tigertons. The depreciation will be minimal.
now it's the time to sell the Quad G5's, so you still can get a nice return. I am doing it as soon as the octo is announce.

My gut feeling these machines will come at NAB. They will use the special event to do that. I wonder if they will be redesign or the enclosure will be the same.
Shipping dates will rely on Leopard. So hopefully Leopard is here sooner than later.

and something even better a year after that!

you can wait for 5 years too!!

Keeping My Quad G5 For The Rest Of My Life

I'm keeping my Quad G5. It still plays Classic. Plus it's a Classic. I don't see any reason to give up a Quad G5 unless you can only use one computer. I love how quiet and reliable it is.

yes the Quad is great, but I only need one desktop my other is a laptop, so no need for me to keep it.
The Quad was an excellent investment. I am glad I purchase it back in October 2005. It paid for itself already. You can still get more than $2k on ebay, so it's a great deal to sell it soon.;)

Generally speaking, the practice of releasing new products on Tuesdays (or Saturdays), whether it's DVDs or computers, has to do with shipping and maximizing production time.

Having a product available, in store, to customers on Monday means that it has sat in the store since Friday (Saturday delivery is never economical) -- this means that the product is sitting in storage for 2-3 days, when it is not for sale, not visible and (unfortunately) ripe for inventory losses (theft).

Furthermore, it means shipping those in-store items from the factory 2-3 days earlier, for no financial gain. Monday delivery/Tuesday release means that products sit only overnight and that production can continue longer.

(There's probably also some statistics that indicate people are less likely to make large purchases on a Monday, after spending a chunk of their paychecks over the weekend.)
Does your wife ever tell you how irriating you are? Chill out. You are reading WAY too much into this.

What the? mustang_dvs's post was informative, completely non-irritating, and on-topic for the subthread it was following. How could anyone possibly take offense to that? I found it interesting because I've sometimes wondered why DVD and CD releases are always on Tuesday. Seems like a plausible explanation.

Maybe you need to chill out. ;)

As for Apple releasing on Tuesdays, I'll bet this is more urban legend than actual truth. Certainly the last three OS X releases have been on Fridays or Saturdays, so no correlation there. I don't care to look up other product releases, but I recall many on non-Tuesdays, and yet the Tuesday myth persists.
