and how does your buddy know?
Maybe he has a similarly spec'd Dell machine. It wouldn't behave much differently than the Apple version, assuming the rest of the specs besides the CPUs stay the same. Or he might have dropped in the 8-cores into his own Mac Pro because he was anxious and couldn't wait. I think they're pin compatible, but I'm not too sure though.

Yeah it dosen't look good at this point.

i saw this thread late last evening and i tried really hard not to get my hopes up...

and then i saw that the UK site was back down....and i knew they were taking the 8-core option back off....and deep down in my little heart i knew that this would not be the tuesday we had hoped for.

Darn it!! Store is still up at it's 8:00 am PST. Wallet was ready. When are these darn things going to come out...I've been waiting for months!! :(

Generally speaking, the practice of releasing new products on Tuesdays (or Saturdays), whether it's DVDs or computers, has to do with shipping and maximizing production time.

Having a product available, in store, to customers on Monday means that it has sat in the store since Friday (Saturday delivery is never economical) -- this means that the product is sitting in storage for 2-3 days, when it is not for sale, not visible and (unfortunately) ripe for inventory losses (theft).

Furthermore, it means shipping those in-store items from the factory 2-3 days earlier, for no financial gain. Monday delivery/Tuesday release means that products sit only overnight and that production can continue longer.

(There's probably also some statistics that indicate people are less likely to make large purchases on a Monday, after spending a chunk of their paychecks over the weekend.)

Does your wife ever tell you how irriating you are? Chill out. You are reading WAY too much into this.

You must understand that Eight Cores are beneficial even if a specific application's software if not written for them -- the benefit occurs when the WORKFLOW is built around the processors. So for example, Photoshop processes a large image with filters and effects on a couple, Indesign RIPS a very Large PDF Press Ready file of a 64 page children's book on one or two more, all the while the user cranks companion video through Compressor, etc, etc.

I use Quad Cores for this type of workflow right now. Eight Cores only make it better -- RIGHT NOW!

I'm prepared to buy an 8-core Mac Pro the morning it's released.
I've got some projects that I could blow through if I had one.

In the back of my mind, I can't help but think it's going to be a bit of a waste. Performance is now at the mercy of memory bandwidth.

Those 8 cores will be starving for data.

Does Mac still make computers?????

The iphone just aint doing it for us!!! And it's not even out yet... I'm tired of looking at it...

I don't understand the apple store nearby was shut on March 11th Sunday for modifications.

If your going to make us wait, Mr. Apple man, throw a quad chip in the 24" Imac and the 17" MacBook Pro... rant... rant...

Give the people what they want!!!!

Dunno about you guys but I'm sick of seeing the iPhone on Apple.com, it's been on far too long

i agree...what they need to do is re-vamp the existing product line and splash that across the front page instead of advertising a yet-to-be-sold product...IMHO, of course.
