None of us here know all the facts, yet most will take Apples side? Maybe we'll wait and see before picking on the old lady. Sure there are too many lawsuits out there, but each case stands on its own.

If it was a case about an old lady walking into a Samsung glass door, I do believe that many here would be cheering her on.
It is a shame.

I can only speak for myself and, for me, neither age nor the name of the company being sued enters into it. If she had simply sought damages to cover medical expenses I wouldn't even have a thought about this. However, she is asking for a million dollars; which is pure greed and I don't care what company she is suing.

If you are referring to the infamous McDonalds case that has been totally misrepresented over the years, you're wrong - she only ended up with about $600,000 which was after McDonalds was found to be 80% liable and had refused a more reasonable settlement for real severe injuries.

Cite.

ETA:

Did you get third degree burns from such an indecent that required skin grafts and have medical bills that the organization refused to pay even though it had done so in the past like in the case I just cited?

Ya know... it's like that TV show: 1000 Ways To Die.

You KNOW that you shouldn't put the coffee between your thighs.. there are nicer things to put there. You KNOW there may be a chance that it will spill or you may crush it, much like when driving if you are eating a chicken wing, you KNOW you might have to chuck that bad boy on the ground if you need full control of your vehicle... wait a minute? You DIDN'T see it coming?? Who gives a flying flock if you got skin grafts? I can see the logic of sueing if the employee dashed it all over you. However, placing it in YOUR OWN LAP, knowing the potential risk, is just as stupid as soaking the plug to your toaster before using wet hands to plug it in.

How many times have I done dumb things thinking that "Oh, perhaps I shouldn't try to carry my plate of food, glass of wine and book downstairs" I might spill some.....oh... damn, there goes my grilled cheese sandwich... good thing the dog was there to catch it......

News flash, coffee has to be hot. Most people drink it with cream etc which cools it down anyways so the temp has to compensate for it. It's not like the damn stuff is boiling actively in the cups when people hand it to you....

No sympathy for stupidity.

Isn't that standard legal bargaining strategy in the US?

Start high, and hope to end up negotiating for your actual expenses.

What happened to the days of "oops my bad, I can't believe I did that"? Nope, now someone else has to be responsible.

Of course there's a slight bias on the Apple forums. It'd be interesting to see what they're saying on the i-heart-old-women-who-walk-into-objects.com forums.

This whole thing really makes me want to listen to The Clash and alter the lyrics accordingly. "I fought the door and the door won". Anyone? No? Just me? Okay then.

The hatred for this old woman is amazing...but imagine if she was suing google or microsoft instead.

It's a counter store in a mall, not an open air farmers market

Markings or no markings on the glass I never understood how people could just walk into a glass storefront. Simple logic would dictate that there is no way any store, especially a computer store with hundreds of thousands of dollars of sensitive computer equipment would have a completely open storefront exposing it all to the elements. What aiut rain, snow, heat, dust...? Not to mention having a door controls customer traffic flow.

The cost of filing this lawsuit should be her driver's license.

"I'd like to sue Apple because I'd walked into their glass doors which I couldn't see."

"No problem ma'am, that will be $50 and your driver's license. Hand that over and we'll process your paperwork."

"My driver's license?"

"If you can't see a glass door at walking speed, you have no business driving."

I don't hate her because it was an Apple store, I hate her for not taking responsibility for her actions and suing someone.

If it's raining and you walk into a store with a tile floor, you should just know it might be slippery. There doesn't need to be 17 pylons in different languages telling you "caution" or "slippery when wet". No common sense anymore.

Don't blame her, blame her ambulance chaser of a lawyer... only in America does a Jane-Nobody sue for 21K medical expenses (Legit) + 1 Million dollars in damages

Agreed, not your typical Apple demographic. Doubtful Long Island has many open-air store fronts or that the store front was incongruent with the rest of the store fronts on that block where she could have simply been caught off guard.

My dad crashed into my sliding glass door when he was only 62 and healthy.
He said "You keep your glass too clean."
I had to put giant stickers on the glass so it wouldn't happen again. :(

That's not what happened - the spill happened when she was adding sugar to the cup. At no time was it in between her thighs. Honestly read the case before you try to comment on things.

Lots of jokes about this woman I see. Of course, let's see how sharp and clear you see when most of you are 80+. The truth is, older people lose vision acuity, even if they have no vision disease or other loss. While I always decry our sue-happy culture, Apple should consider being a little less trendy and a little more practical when designing their stores or anything else that deals directly with customers.

If your eyesight is significantly impaired, then you should be responsible to yourself and use an aid to walking, for example a cane in front of you. It would have hit the door and she would have known that there was something in the way. Or maybe (if the photo of the apple store is the correct store) the huge, metal door handles would have been a clue.

Okay, maybe she is too proud to use a cane or other visual aids, but in that case she just has to accept that accidents like this can happen. It's not like fully glass doors are a new invention.

Judging from the comment that pointed out a review the woman gave, it appears she was in an "old person rage" that the iPhone she had bought didn't work on her provider and she probably wasn't paying any attention to where she was going. It could have been a lamppost.

I hope this lady loses and has to pay Apple back for the money they spent paying an employee to clean the smudge her face left on the glass.

:D:D:D:D That would be awesome. The lady was 83 years old, she couldn't have been moving that fast. I don't see how she could have hit it that hard (unless on purpose). Even if it wasn't on purpose, I can't imagine why she thinks she's entitled to more than her medical cost (which medicare probably already paid).

Speed of Travel

So what is the speed of an 83-year old lady pushing a walker? 0.03mpg? The impact against the glass must be as hard as the pressure she exerted pressing the face to it :D

I have walked into glass door and the last thing I though about was suing the owner of the door for me walking into it. I was embarrassed and walked away.

I hope she loses!
