Why cripple a "pro" product with less memory? Conceivable "pros" will be using this for photo/video editing or things like GarageBand or music software. Why would you not give them 4gb to work with.

Also just looking at the pricing scheme, is the iPhone SE really $200 less than iPad Pro 9.7, which has so much more features to offer? Either the iPad Pro is really great value, or the iPhone SE has a ridiculous profit margin. Knowing Apple, I am sure its the latter case. I can't imagine the iPhone SE costing more than $100 to build.

I feel even more comfortable with my purchase this morning of an IPP 12.9 for $699 at Best Buy. Been on the fence since the IPP 12.9 launch, but just could not spend $799 given the new iPad 9.7 was around the corner. Seeing the new 9.7 started at $599, made sense to spend the extra $100

You caught them. Opening up twenty tabs means more RAM will be used. Never ran into that issue, though.

Wait, what? You did pay attention to the test where they opened up 20 tabs, right? I doubt that being unable to open 20 tabs means it "isn't usable with multi-tab".

The issue is it didn't retain ANY tab. o_O Not the first 4-6, nothing.

I have no problem with the 2GB on my iPad Air 2, but this really put an end to my thoughts of picking up the iPad Pro 9.7" and using it for more intensive work. Here's the deal: Professional software developers need RAM to deliver professional apps, especially for creative applications where you have large drawing canvas areas, many layers, etc. Putting 2GB in this "Pro" machine makes it a joke—except nobody is laughing! Hopefully the 12.9" model can capture enough market for big professional apps to be developed for it, because this thing isn't going to make any developers excited with limited RAM specs.

Anything this 9.7" machine can run, my iPad Air 2 can run. It just has the same camera as my 6s, which I'll never use, four speakers, which I don't care about, and the stylus, which I actually do really want. The new display is nice but I don't use my iPad outdoors much so it's not quite warranted. Also they talked about 25% better color saturation. Isn't the Air 2 like 99% sRGB? I often shy away from displays that go much over 100% because it doesn't accurately reflect what typical users online will see when viewing my work. 100% Adobe RGB would be nice as that's the color space I shoot in, but that's best for printing and I have to do extra tests or conversions for the web.

Personally I'm kinda glad that Apple made up my mind for me because I've been torn. I really wanted to wait another year anyway to see what happens with the software and iOS X. Until then my Air 2 will be fine! What it comes down to is spending more to get an iPad that has the option to spend more to get a stylus. At least the iPhone SE is a good deal. And now the iPad Air 2 is a great deal starting at $399!

Typical sheep that know nothing of specs at all and they are the majority. Most people do not hang out at forums and know nothing of the specs, people like these on these forums are in the minority. Very few people will walk into a store and say "hey, this only has 2gb of memory". Why would someone buy a 16gb 6s plus over a 32 or 64 (whatever it is) 6 plus? Because it's newer and because they don't know anything about specs people buy a lot of 16gb phones because it's the cheapest new version. That's why they have been sticking with them.

I don't personally know of anyone other than myself that has a clue how much ram their device has, most not even their storage.

The word pro is just a marketing scheme and it will work on a lot of people. A lot of people just want the "newest" and have no clue. "Hey, the newest is a pro it's worth the difference". "The air 2 is a year and a half old" no matter how good it is.

Don't believe most people research these releases, they do not. They realize apple released something new, go into the store and buy it. "Newest version", "pro". Why do you think they did not call it air 3? Marketing and sales. What do you think sales people will push? The newest version on display.

Try working in retail sometimes, it's an eye opener. Add the word pro, professional, etc. to something and people believe it. Not people that hang out on forums but typical consumers. Tools, etc.

I would buy the air 2, I would recommend most people I know to get the air 2 as it's all they would need. Most people go into it blind though.

Look at post 154's comment, exactly right except I would also apply that to most TECH buyers. On the other hand there are a LOT of apple users in an upgrade cycle just because it's apple.

Who are these "most people" that are going to look at the old price of the Air 2 and say, hey, I only have to pay $100 more for really negligible upgrades other than pencil support and grin like they won the lottery? Why wouldn't they look at the current price of the Air 2 and ask "wait, this 32GB 9.7 Pro is $100 more than this 64GB Air 2."

I've said it here a few times but I'll repeat - 32GB, for me, is rather worthless. 128GB is great but not worth the price of admission. I'm sticking with my Air 2 even though I would love pencil support. Apple has under-configured me on one end of the spectrum and over-priced on the other.

Good news is the 9.7 Pro will likely soon get nice discounts like its 13" brother so this price hike will be neutralized and maybe then I'll consider.

For me, this confirms that iPhone 7 will have 32GB standard. They pushed 16GB to the low end with this move, and since RAM is the only differentiating factor between the 6S and SE, the 7 will push the the storage up.

I'm shocked the SE has 2GB of memory. Really unexpected. This has to be the lowest margin device that Apple makes, period.

That's great news for the SE and makes it a really compelling option for the price.2GB of RAM, however, just doesn't feel like enough for an iPad. My old iPad 3 has 1GB of RAM and virtually any website will crash it within a few minutes after running out of RAM. Just having double the RAM isn't going to do it. Actually, even 4GB might not be enough, though I'll admit I haven't used the big iPad Pro for more than a few minutes.Sadly, modern webpages are incredibly RAM heavy. On my desktop I commonly see "infinite scrolling" style sites consume multiple gigabytes of ram for a single tab. The move to more and more JS framework-driven sites means this is only going to be become more common.

I don't think that's very realistic usage though. I can't think of a time I used a website that took gigabytes of RAM on a desktop, even if something was wrong. Maybe you're exaggerating a little bit ;)? Tabs reloading and apps shutting off on an older iPad can be a problem if there are two or three apps multitasking, but even with 1GB RAM in my iPad Air I seldom see that happen. Safari never suddenly crashes while I'm just browsing Yahoo or something.

I think Apple is stupid for calling this an iPad Pro instead of the Air 3 or some other name.

So it's really just an iPad Air 3?
Edit - Okay, SE is sounding like a really good deal now. Better battery, better performance and didn't cheap out on RAM.

Starting to be more apparent that the iPad Pro is just an Air 3, between the ram and USB 2 lightning port.

It's starting to confuse me that people are tying the names of products really tightly to specs in a way that Apple never intended (And in the case of RAM, specs they don't even advertise). Show me where "Pro" means 4GB of RAM and a USB 3 lightning port

This makes the Air 2 seem well priced. Actually, thinking about it, for the first time in ages Apple have some fairly high end gear at great affordable prices (the iPhone SE and Air 2).

Besides the little difference, that the iPhone 6S has a way bigger screen :)

Apple does this so next year they can come out with the new super-duper 9.7" iPad Pro SE Air 3 and get everyone buying a product they could have released this year.
Apple does this to save on cost and materials obviously. But you really think they are using RAM, a spec they don't even talk about, to entice new buyers? Outside of tech forum readers do you think anyone knows how much RAM is in their iPad?

The $750 iPad Pro only has 2GB!? That's a gut punch. Still, the Air 2 had 2 GB and I never had any issues with that.
The Air 2 is terrific. But if I'm going to dish out "Pro" dollars, then I want a comparable device. 2GB RAM guarantees that I'm not going to dish out "Pro" dollars. The sad part is that Apple quietly discontinued the 128GB Air 2 yesterday. Thankfully that's the one I bought last Fall, but I was hoping to perhaps buy another for my wife.

Wow, they keeping crippling the smaller iPads. The iPad mini 2/Air 1 had the same CPU/GPU/RAM. The mini 4 has a weaker CPU/GPU compared to the Air 2 (I'm not even going to mention the pathetic place-holder Mini 3). Now the iPP 9.7 has half the ram of it's bigger brother. Apple is segmenting the hell out of their iPads!
Gotta love Apple, when you're losing sales the answer is to further cripple your iPads.

The iPhone SE is a sweet phone OTOH as it's just as quick as their flagship which still outclasses Android flagships.

So this 9.7" Pro doesn't have a new screen (a better one than the 12" Pro), better camera (again, better than the 12" Pro), and support for Pencil?

Virtually every iPad launch came with a faster processor, better camera and better screen, in fact lot of magical upgrades we didn't know we needed....they have always maintained the price and lowered (relagated) the previous models price. This time they upped the price.

Disappointments: No 3D touch on any device announced. :(

Thoughts about "Pro" label: I think it makes sense for Apple to do this because the iPad is really a much better tablet than the stinky $99-$199 Android tablets out there. It's a way to differentiate themselves to say as much as they can, "we have great hardware and you can do great things with this device". Unlike those practically disposable handiPads which are running Android and aren't even good for web browsing.
