I bought one but will return it on Monday. I came to realize I strongly prefer the iPad mini, which is just so much more portable and pleasant to use. Hoping for a "mini pro" next year.

Tbh I think I much prefer my mini 4 to the 10" iPad too. I can't see them doing a Pro version though, but at least making the Pencil compatible with every iPad in October would be nice. Though they've confused the iPad line up and now I'm unsure what they'll do with the mini and standard iPad. Some were suggesting the mini would be discontinued because of the 6 Plus, but the 5.5" iPhone has been out for a while now and we've not seen any evidence to suggest they'll be cutting the mini.

For many, especially if one wants to draw with the Pencil, the improvements are huge. There's also the much better display with wider color gamut, significantly faster A9X processor, better speakers, TrueTone display technology, better 12 megapixel back camera, and better 5 megapixel front camera.
Camera upgrades and processor upgrades are pretty much common with any device...the speaker and the pencil was the real upgrade....but nice to have a better camera although I will never take pics on a iPad....for videos it might be cool but I will not haul one out to the beach or anything......I don't think Apple truly upgraded the screen...a real screen upgrade would have increased ppi, have oled or increase the resolution and I'm not a fan of color distortion. Samsungs galaxy tab S2 has a amazing screen so not impressed and the Galaxy Tab S1 has a even better screen.

Another protruding camera, how disappointing. I do wonder how artists use the iPad Pro with a protruding camera as it rocks back and forward on a flat surface. Maybe it requires a case to be used?

I have the new 9.7" iPad Pro with the Apple case and the camera doesn't protrude beyond the case. If the iPad isn't used with a case there would be an issue; however, assuming most people use a case then it's not an issue.

The iPad doesn't rock back and forth at all without a case on a flat surface.

How's that not possible. One corner with the protruding camera is elevated, the two closest corners to the camera must also be elevated but unsupported while the other corner makes contact with the table/desk surface. There must be some rocking when placed on a flat surface without a case.

We do not want Devs making games etc that run fine on older devices, we want, at least a group of the best devs to create games that run like crap on another other than THE very latest iPads and iPhone, and then when the next iPad or iPhone come out, make new games that need THESE new devices to run well.

That might be possible if App Store customers would willingly buy $50-60 games. But when you can only get a buck or two out of each customer, you have to reach the widest possible audience.

I guess because of its size? I don't know, but it doesn't rock at all.

So, basically, it's not an upgrade, or a worthwhile upgrade, unless I call it that... That's what I got from your post.

Just realized how much is going on in that top left corner of the iPad - speaker, two microphones, two volume buttons, power button, camera, and flash. That's a lot to be crammed into that one corner - pretty impressive!

Just got myself a bit used Air 2 64GB from Ebay for 300£, what a bargain. Before I had 32GB mini 2 but it became somehow small. Was thinking about 32GB 9.7 Pro but realizing its 200£ for few features and its also 2GB RAM made me quickly to say nope. 200£ !!! Like 300$ for that upgrade?

Actually, it does not rock at all even without a case. I just put mine on a table and there is no rocking. Edit: Reading fail. I just saw that I repeated what you said. Never mind ;-)

No pic on an iPad? Why not? Many programs allow you to take pics and insert them into documents or what-have-you. I take pics of presentations all the time and put them in InkFlow, much easier than hastily scribbling down notes during a presentation. Get outside your comfort zone and use the tools..... AFA an upgraded screen, there are more things that go into the final view than what you list. Increased ppi may be the most meaningless of all of them given the device size and how far it is meant to be held from your eyes.

If you pressed down wity your finger in the top right corner (in portrait orientation) of the iPad (without touching it anywhere else), it'll probably rock. But you'd likely normally have your second hand somewhere on the iPad further down which provides enough counterbalance unless you press really hard at the top right corner and you'd also rarely go to the top right corner in the first place and if you do, you'll likely don't press very hard (on touch screens you normally never press very hard, couple that with one hand usually partially placed somewhere along the bottom third).

No sarcasm. I would have imagined it would wobble or rock on a flat surface as one corner is raised leaving two corners floating. Protruding camera in any event is unsightly. Please fix, Apple.
Try this: Take you iPad, put something very small below one of the top corners. Now rest your hand either of the bottom corners. Now tap the the other top corner (the one with nothing beneath). Result: Unless you press really hard that corner will keep floating in the air. And even if you press hard enough for it to touch the surface, as long as you have your other hand on the opposite corner the iPad will actually flex enough to touch the surface without rocking.

I can't justify $200 for this over the Air 2 I'm sorry. I'm sure others can but if you use it mostly for web browsing and playing around in a few apps then no, just no.
More like $300 with pen and $469 with keyboard and pen. Without both the iPad Pro may seem less then complete.

As compared to what? A Surface? Linked keyboards and stylus are nothing new. If you have lived with the iPad paradigm this long, the lack of those optional items will probably not be missed. You'll just have a faster iPad with a better display and the option of adding those down the road if you decide that they are needed. Otherwise, for those who aren't looking or ever expecting to need those options, there is the Air 2. That is why it remains in the inventory. It is not a consolation prize for second place, it is there to fill the usage scenario that many current Air 2 owners have noted in this thread. That there may not be enough 'ummph' to the 9.7" iPad Pro to move them off their Air 2's is not a failure of the Pro to deliver the goods. The Air 2 is a completely robust and viable device and is probably overkill for how it is being used by many. Heck, the iPad Air is still a completely serviceable unit. So I do not think it is right to look at the current non-mini iPad lineup as Good, Better, Best. They are all BEST if they match what your needs are and now there is a nice price range to go along with that. So disappointed Air 2 owners, congratulations, you can continue your completely effective workflow and save at least $600.00 in upgrade costs this time around. Maybe even the next time around too. Why spend money for the sake of things you don't need? For others, they have options too, which may likely be less than a similarly appointed Surface if native keyboard and stylus are must haves.

Comparing to a laptop the pen and keyboard are necessary. New apps will require the pen, keyboard optional, to fully function. The big deal with he Surface Pro is the pen and keyboard, note their ads. The iPad 2 is very capable as a tablet if that is all you want. More power then needed unless you are using drafting, drawing, intense photo editing and then you need the pen at a minimum. Reality, the iPad Pro properly configured should include a pen and keyboard when one, compare with a laptop and two, to fully leverage the new apps that will make the investment worthwhile. Otherwise, the iPad 2 is more then adequate. The price is as I stated. If you want to compete with a Surface Pro, require the new apps, then you will need to pay $469 more, not an option.

We all have phones that most likely take better pics.....

The new iPad pro 9.7 really created a problem for me. I have a first generation iPad Air that I need to pass on to my son, and I was planning on picking up the new iPad this spring, anticipating an iPad Air 3. But the new features of the pro combined with 2 GB of RAM (the same as the iPad air two) really didn't seem like it was worth this huge price premium. Especially for a device that I use mostly for surfing the web and watching Netflix. I have a Mac that I use for my job, so my iPad is truly a leisure device.

I waited until launch day and went to the Apple Store to play with the new iPad pro 9.7 and the iPad Air 2 side by side. Honestly I couldn't justify the extra expense of the pro. So I bought an iPad air 2 64gb and honestly it's awesome for what I need. And I saved a whole bunch of money. For me the reduced price on the Air 2 was a nice incentive.

Sweet, now I can upgrade to the Pro and use my old iPad Air 2 to cut lines of coke on

Now where's that razor blade...

i'm still using my iPad Air 1, and have no plans to upgrade my iPad anytime soon. perhaps the 12 inch iPad Pro, just to own (like i need more apple devices) a bigger iPad that has writing capabilities. but i hardly ever write down notes anyway... (i type them)

Offering optional accessories equals 'needing accessories'? How dare they offer a pencil, I now have to buy it. And how do they dare to offer their own keyboard cover (in addition to selling third-party keyboard covers in their store), I now have to buy that as well.

Watch the keynote, the iPad Pro videos etc ..... Apple are pushing it hard as a desktop replacement. Sure go ahead and spend more $$$$ when a iPad Air 2 will Meet all your needs.....

The concept is not difficult, if you want t turn the iPad Pro into laptop replacement, the accessories are needed! I like how forum members choose to ignore he key aspect of the iPad Pro that apple is pushing.
