Lmao! Are people really talking about equity on a product that loses its value? :D you guys are a hoot!

Exactly. All iPhones depreciate to a pretty negligible value in 3-4 years. Buying outright or using NEXT only provides an 'extra' value if you use it close to the lifespan and are getting some sort of savings on your monthly rate.

I think it's more the idea that a $850 phone can be sold the following year, in excellent condition, for about $500 and then the individual may only have to pay subsidized pricing on their next purchase.

I sell my old phone so my price gets cut in half. Paying 800 for a cell phone is insane. The thing is for me I get most of that back for keeping my previous phone in such good condition for resale.

I have to admit that I am starting to realize how ridiculous the price point is. It's not about not being able to afford it but more about the intrinsic value. I'm on the verge of cancelling my order. Anyone else feel this way?

Trust your instincts and cancel that order. $1,000 for a phone is ludicrous and a line that should not be crossed.

The sooner Apple gets accustomed to people actually paying the $1,000/phone the sooner they will raise the prices to $1,100... then $1,200... etc.

I mean for just $65 more I could buy a new Macbook Air!
Well, yeah. And then I guess you could make phone calls on it like this guy:

But if your paying the subsidized price...your essentially paying the same cost....just broke out into a monthly surcharge on top of the subsidized price you paid.

If you're not paying off contract monthly rates, your basically paying for the phone a different way.

That's true but trading the phone in at 12 or 18 months is not a smart financial move. That equals just renting the device for whatever term. You come out better owning the device whether you finance it at 0% or buy it outright.

$849 for the phone
$67 in taxes
$18 for a case off Amazon.

I have never spent this much money on a phone before. When the first iPhone came out I purchased it used off Craigslist for about $450 a few days after it came out and that was a bit pricey in 07. The phone was not subsidized then. Since then I have always paid subsidized prices. All my iPhone's through the 4s, my S3 and current S4 were all under $200. Maybe I'm just used to this price. A bit on the fence here. How do you all feel about paying full price for the 6+? I know there are cheaper options but those would feel like a downgrade to my current S4. Any thoughts?
ouch...

Could of bought

New TV
nice gaming PC
good quality tires for the vehicle
a crap load of cloths even shoes
PS4 or X1

The most I ever spent right up front for a phone was $500 would never do again. Crazy seeing theses phone prices sky rocket higher and higher.

This thread hits me in the head.

When I want to save up on something, I can't seem to do so but when its iPhone season, I manage to magically come up with money (for the unsubsidized unit). I need help.

It's unfortunate that the device is saddled with the "phone" moniker: it's so much more than a phone. I see that I have a very powerful computer, communicator, and entertainment device in my pocket, and the price makes sense to me. They're way better than what I saw on Star Trek. :)

I am thinking about waiting for the 6s or whatever they will call it next year. We all want the latest and greatest but my S4 is plenty capable. Damn you Apple Watch. You are what started this... lol

I'd wait for the Apple Watch 2 so it might be sensible to save your money and buy later on both accounts.

i agree with you there. I think NEXT was a fair way to move to the subsidized model. But cost wise it can be more expensive than buying/selling. The tradeoff is giving folks flexibility they didn't have before.

Yeah, it's a lot, but besides my bed perhaps, there are few things I use more (or more often, at least) than my cell phone.

This is the best way to think about it. When you think of the material objects that you'd rather not do without, your phone is almost always gonna be in the top five.

Don't feel bad about investing in things that matter to you. :)

I came to the same conclusion. Was all excited for the 6, but since I now do full pricing/no subsidy, I was forced to think about the full price. For me, it would be a 64gb 6 ($750) plus tax, plus probably an apple case (cause I'm a sucker)... Total price probably close to $900. I could sell my well-used 32gb iPhone 5 for maybe $200.

So $700 to upgrade from a phone that runs iOS 7 great, will run iOS 8, lasts the day, never feels slow, and does everything I need perfectly well.

Couldn't justify it. Sticking with my iPhone 5 until it doesn't do what I need anymore.

Yes I actually canceled my order. My reasons a bit more complicated. I'm in t-mobile's jump program and not happy with it. They make it seem like they are giving you more for your trade in than their competition. I decided to pay off my 2 iPhone 5s and sell on my own. This will give me about 400 more dollars to put toward 2 new phones(iPhone 6 128g and iPhone 6+ 128g)

Phones havent been 'phones' in a while. Yeah, pretty close to Macbook Air money, but honestly, the phone is replacing the laptop for me. I bought a maxed out Air last year and most of the time i end up on my phone or the ipad. I expect that is the case for a lot of people, which is why the bigger phones are becoming more popular. I paid the subsidized amount for mine, but if that wasnt an option, i would have paid the retail amount.

It has gotten to the point of being ridiculous. But as long as people are willing to pay Apple is going to charge it. They are out to make a profit and are darn good at it. They'd be crazy to not charge what people will pay, that's just good business. It's pretty obvious it doesn't cost the same to make and iPhone as it does an Air but they can charge it because the market will bear it.

Yup. I just paid $2800 for a purse, but I get annoyed paying $40 for a haircut and think it's wasteful to eat out at fast food every day for lunch. It's about what makes you happy and what you can afford! To me, $1.50 or so a day over a 2-year lifespan of a phone is well worth it.

It's not a phone. I hear this sentiment expressed all the time ("It's just a phone"), but it's so far off the mark that it's crazy.

It's like purchasing a loaded Subaru and complaining you spent $30,000 on a chair. Sure, it has a chair. You didn't buy a chair, though.
