Based on stories popping up in the news lately, I'm starting to rethink my opinion on this. According to this article in particular, e ink screen orders from Amazon have tanked and so have sales of the Kindle Fire:

http://seekingalpha.com/article/557151-kindle-sales-plunge-made-amazon-com-s-gross-margin-look-better?source=yahoo

I'm surprised by this. Maybe Apple SHOULDN'T do an iPad Mini!!

Has no correlation with the potential for Apple.

The Kindle Fire is a loss leader to sell more Amazon content. It's severely limited with no camera or bluetooth. And while it runs Android it's a heavily masked version.

People aren't buying iPads because they are tablets. They're buying iPads because of the OS and apps and user experience.

7.85 tablet from Apple would be a nice addition for many like me that wants portability for casual settings like perhaps at the beach, restaurants, etc and I would buy one if it was not dumbed down to a point where it becomes useless. OP, you made a mistake in this posting which should tell you with all the down votes not to be sooo,.....well.....dumbed down. :D ;)

You isheeple are unbelievable. The kindle fire got off to a spritely start, sucking in the 7" irellevant flash in the pan suckers, and now, guess what, it's kinda, not selling much. What a surprise man. Its a loony fad in the purest sense. You think Apple don't know the difference between a fad and a revolution? The kindle is a piece of junk as is the 7" inch galaxy tab. Apple couldn't produce a $250 piece of junk if they wanted to. It's not in their DNA.

Use it for a couple of days you realise its actually not that much bigger than your iPhone, its too big for your fat ass pocket, you need a bag anyways, then start crying about how if you were gonna heave around a bag how you wished you bought a regular 9.7" device. None of this 14 day return window. You should be met with an FU from Apple.

If Apple will produce that device and I'm gonna laugh at your sorry faces. Dont worry i wont laugh at you because deep down you all know as well as i do it aint never gonna happen.

I hope they make this thread a sticky so when I'm having a bad day and need a laugh I can come visit and poke fun at the loonies who don't understand when Steve jobs himself said no, he meant no, and not just not yet.

Wow, so the Kindle fire gets some slight buzz and the doom mongers are out urging Apple to save themselves by producing a 7.85" iPad.

Well it's not happening. I could list many reasons why but I think it's safe to conclude it would be an abomination that goes against everything that Apple has built itself upon recently.

Jobs planned the iPad to be the iPad and there was no room in his vision for any iPad mini. If cook feels this will be a neat way to fill Jobs' shoes and make his mark I think this is the beginning of the end of Apple as we know. It would be a sign that they'll just become another Samsung style hardware manufacturer churning out every device for every whim hoping to hit a winner every now and then.

Edit: Ive added a poll because polls are cool.

Then don't buy one.

How about a third option..."After seeing that there is in fact consumer demand for smaller tablets, Apple chooses to release one, thus ensuring that those consumers don't buy from someone else."

It's not like they'd be killing off the 10" iPad. Many people, including myself will continue to prefer the larger model, but that doesn't mean that other consumers who prefer a smaller size shouldn't be able to get one.

Beyond that, if (and it's a big if) Apple decides to do this, especially at a sub $300 price point, they're not really going for tablet buyers. They're really replacing the iPod Touch. It's sales are already being cannibalized by the iPhone and iPad, but the reality is that it isn't giving it's users the best experience. The small size limits the amount of memory that can be installed. Games are less enjoyable on a small screen. Reading books is far less enjoyable, as is browsing the web.

Apple has proven that it is ok with cannibalization, as long as it's cannibalizing itself. Currently however, with a $199 Kindle Fire on the market, they are being cannibalized by a competitor. The Kindle Fire and other 7" tablets aren't taking sales from the iPad. They're taking them from the iPod Touch. People don't buy the iPod Touch as a music player, they buy it as a multimedia consumption device. All of those activities would be better with a larger screen. The 7" size would allow Apple to offer competitive pricing and a product that is still reasonably mobile to these consumers.

There's also people like me, who prefer the 10" iPad, but wouldn't mind having a smaller one that sits on the coffee table. A low price point would make that realistic.

Never argue with an Idiot (wonder who I could be referring to??), they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.....

Sometimes I wish that Apple would release it already, only to stop the fruitless speculations on this site.

Dont worry, i won't, neither will anyone else for that matter.

It's statements like this that put you in the position of having to potentially eat your own foot later.

Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.

Lets come back to this thread in about a year and relish 1 or more of three things:

1) You wasting your energy arguing about something that doesn't effect you because:
a) It didn't happen
b) It did happen, but you aren't getting one anyway so what's the point?

2) You are right and the iPad Mini is a failure and we should all thank you for your wisdom and apple should hire you as their CEO because of your extensive background in dominating the world all from your keyboard.

3) You just being plain wrong.

It's so easy to be a cynic from your keyboard. The world is so stupid and you have the answers don't you? Please, do humankind a favor and start a company and run it the way it supposed to be run. It's about time someone like you with all the answers takes the reigns and shows the world what someone who is never wrong can really do. I sincerely hope you do, because that should save me a few bucks next time I buy something. And please tell me when your company will go public so I can buy some shares, because it most certainly will make me feel financially secure knowing the guy that is never wrong is behind the wheel.

The main question for me, if it comes out, will there be a 3G/4G option.
wifi-only devices are for keeping at home IMO.

Wifi-only devices are for keeping at home if home is the only place one has wifi. I have wifi everywhere I have cell service.

That said if there is 7"-8" tablet it will most certainly have 3G/4G as an option.

Of all the reasons for Apple not to generate a 7-8" iPad, citing the terrible experience using the kindle fire or other pos android tablets of that size completely misses the point. They sold, then slowed down dramatically, because they are inferior - even vastly so - in overall user experience.

You really think an Apple made iOS tablet in a 7-8" form factor would offer anything other than a great user experience? If so, then I don't know what to tell you.

First comment- please word your questions in a manner that is clear and concise. I had to read those a few times to figure out what you were asking. Simple is good.

Second- I have a 7 inch android tablet and love the form factor. And I have two iPads (2 and new one.) I think a 7 inch version would be a welcome addition. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Pretty simple.

You must have many bad days in your life because I can read it in your posts.

Congratulations on removing all doubt.

+1
amen.

IF apple decided to release one, they are going to release something that works well. You cant compare the sales/experience of a 7" android to sales/experience of a non existent 7" ipad.

A 7-inch screen is the proportional middle between the iPad and the iPhone screen size.

Personally, having seen and held a Kindle, I think there is definitely a market for this size. For one thing, it would fit in a purse and be relatively light, compared to the standard iPad. Also, the iPad is somewhat cumbersome to hold for long periods of reading. I was interested to watch a woman in a medical waiting room grab her Kindle to read while waiting. If the 7-inch iPad mini also accommodated the regular iPhone/iPad apps, which I would expect it to do, that's a winner.

Honestly, if it came with 4G cell service, I think I would replace my iPhone4 and iPad with the mini as a multi-purpose device. As it is, I use the iPhone on speaker nearly all the time, so it's not really a matter of being hand-size friendly.

LOL. Are you over yourself yet? Do you have any idea how insane you sound?

I've said this before in this thread, but you conveniently ignored it...

You never get to say "I told you so." unless Apple closes its doors before you die. Do you grasp this? Your bizarrely militant stance can't be proven. Period. Yet you yammer on and on as if you are stating fact, when the only fact is, you have no facts. The only thing that could possibly be proven after all your ranting is that you were wrong, if in fact a 7" iPad is released some day.

And if Apple does come out with a 7" iPad, you will go into hiding somewhere anyway, with your delusions of grandeur rendering you paralyzed to face your mistakes. You will do a disappearing act, just like those who said Apple would never make a phone or a tablet. Yes, it's true, as special and correct as you clearly think you are, there have been people exactly like you for every product Apple has made, starting with the iPod.

Suck it up.

At this point, it's pretty much happening, so to all of you who are saying that it isn't, good luck with that. I'll post again in October/November with my new iPad mini. :)

I think your poll choices are a bit extreme, along with you're thread title. Nothing Apple has ever released has been an 'ABOMINATION', and I highly doubt a slightly smaller version of an extremely successful product could ever be viewed that way.

EDIT: Okay, so the 'puck mouse' MAY have been an abomination, but only in usability, not looks.

Historically, Apple has done things that Steve outright opposed. This wouldn't be a departure or an indication of "post Jobs era". If Apple believes that the 7.xx inch device is worthy to see the light of day and/or that it is essential for them to stay competitive, they'll release it. If not, they won't. Simple as that.
