Price for Price the 16Gb iPod touch is identical to the iPod but offers 1/10th the storage and limited iPhone like wifi functionality.

The iPod runs GarageBand, FaceTime, Skype, and a zillion other apps; works with iCloud to sync Notes, Reminders, Pages, Keynote; you can get your e-mail and calendar on it; you can set up routers with it, etc.

This, according to user barkmonster, is utterly negligible, because this iPod Touch is identical to the iPod besides such minor differences.

Come on man, it's like you're not even trying.

In this case, be happy using your iPod Classic for all the stuff the iPod Touch can do. You've made a great deal, man!

Yeah, nailed it.

I am confused about the intention behind releasing this model - now. WWDC is planned in around 10 days. And rumors say, new iPhone will be coming with fingerprint sensors and this also means, iOS7 will also support it. Usually releases of iPhone and iPod touch are kept together as they resemble in terms of basic iOS functionality.

If they are really releasing fingerprint sensors in new iPhone, then New iPod Touch with fingerprint sensors will be released. Then this is already obsolete.

Or maybe they are not going to release new iPhone with rumored features.

You have to remember this is the "low cost" iPod Touch. The low cost iPhone probably won't get fingerprint functionality either. And iOS 7 will be introduced with no mention of fingerprint sensing.

Then in the fall just before iOS actually ships, there will be an event where the new flagship iPhone will be announced and the "one more thing" feature of iOS 7 will be unveiled, the fingerprint sensor. Then Apple will also be free to roll out the new iPads and a 6th Generation upscale iPod touch with fingerprint sensors. They could do this simultaneously with the phone, or wait a few months and do it closer to the Holidays.

That's how I see it playing out.

Nice try on the sarcasm there but I'm simply pointing out that it's a pointless product because of the lack of functionality and limited storage. The 32Gb model that's £50 more offers WAY more usable storage, a rear camera and still does all "the stuff an iPod Touch can do." :p

Last I checked, kids take LOTS of pictures and videos. This dumbed down version is a no go for that market, IMHO. I'm not sure who this is targeted at, but it sure ain't kids.

Your comment is spot on, so I'm wondering if this makes a great home automation iPod. So much stuff is controlled (or can be) by iOS now. I have Nest, Sonos, Hue, Apple TV's, Logitech Harmony Link and many other things can be added.

Cheaper than an iPad Mini so maybe this would be good to keep around the house.

Nice try on shifting your point once again to a more valid point (or at least one we could argue about) to detract from your ORIGINAL argument.

Yeah, nailed it.

It's not worth £50 saving over the iPod Touch model above it and all those things it CAN do that the iPod can't are of limited appeal when you consider as a music player it offers so little user storage.

That's not where the camera goes. It's a plastic piece to let the Wifi radios work.

The bigger capacity ones have the exact same piece of plastic in them.

What they should do is put in a slightly larger Apple logo made of hard white translucent plastic and put a low power blue LED behind it as well as Wifi antenna.

I genuinely thought this was just a rumour/mockup for the last couple of days. It's a shame because this is probably my favourite iPod to date! (Not that I'll be buying one )

So now £50 is a reasonable price for an extra 16GB of storage and a rear camera?

Also, if the 32GB model differs because of a rear camera and storage (essentially the only differences), then why does the 16GB model have such a 'lack of functionality'? It has almost exactly the same functions as the 32GB model.

Thanks in advance.

So all the things it does are of limited appeal, when you selectively ignore them in favour of only one of its functions - of course! This product should be assessed as primarily a music player, because it doesn't have a rear camera. Now it make sense. Thanks!

Either point is valid.

1) Equal price to the 160Gb iPod but offers iPhone like functionality for Wifi enabled Apps = Poor value compared with the iPod as a music player due to the limited storage.

2) £50 cheaper than the 32Gb iPod Touch = Poor value as a WiFi-only equivalent to the iPhone because the iPod Touch model above it offers more than double the usable storage due to the over-head of iOS and a rear camera for a negligible price difference.

I'm not shifting, I'm ADDING even more to my original point.

There's always going to be people who disagree with you and offer reasons why, it's up to you to come up with constructive validation of your own views or you'll end up resorting to nonsense rebuttals like accusations of backtracking or meaningless smugness ;)

£199 either gets you this:

or this:

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/shop_ipod/family/ipod_classic

There's no contest for a music player and as it's other functionality is of limited use and it's likely to offer more in the region of <14Gb of actual usable storage minus the usual "other" data that sucks even more space away like any other iOS based device no matter how few apps you have installed, it's even less value for money.

They're two very different devices, not really comparable. I don't think anyone would dispute that for absolutely nothing more than a music player, the classic is better, but people buy the iPod Touch to be more that a music player. Not least the SSD means it's better to use on the go, plus it has a hell of a lot more features than the classic.

Buy the classic if you want to take all of your music everywhere you go, and buy the touch if you want to take a small selection to listen to on the go, as well as play games, take notes and do the many thousands of other things you can do with it.

It's not about validating our own views, it's about whether your position is coherent or not and whether it has any merit. So far it's not looking too good for you.

The best thing about an opinion is you're free to completely ignore it

Maybe I was (obviously) adding to my original point?

the video reminds me how insanely great Apple design is

While hobbyists are still trying to build a desktop computer inside a sardine can (Raspberry pi anyone?) Apple has churned out about 100,000,000 palm sized computers since the first Touch was released. The current one doesn't have to apologize for being slow or having a fuzzy screen, and now that the screen is 16:9 video watching ain't so bad either.

Meanwhile the video reminds me how insanely great Apple design is, and every time I pull out a Touch or iPad the attention to detail - fit and finish - blow me away.

Let's face it, iDevices are jewelry for geeks, our Rolexes.

Well, let him have this perfectly validated view. By the way, I just discovered that you have to pay 1200 dollars for a MacBook Air which only gives you a fraction of power, storage and screen size than an iMac for the same price! rip-off!

As a portable music player, a MacBook Air is wayyyy overpriced and has very little functionality. Terrible.

It's actually really nice to see Apple focusing their design efforts on a Non-iPhone product. It seems like over the years, Apple has used the iPhone as a stepping stone to everything else.
Giving the spot-light back to the iPod. I also find it some'what odd that Apple released this without a major event.

I'm still really surprised Apple hasn't added a Sim Card slot in these iPod Touches. Based on how a large chunk of society lives now, we're starting to slowly push away from cellular airtime and some of us don't even make phone calls anymore. (Not me ;))

Love the design. Can't wait to check one out in person.

I see what you did there :D
