I've had the original iPhone since day-1. My 2 year contract will be up this summer and if AT&T wants to keep me they will have to give me something other than just the 3G. I love my iphone but don't need to be paying $60 a month to use my apps. The iphone is a lot better than the touch but 8GB is too small storage and I don't use the actual phone all that much. At this time I'm planning to get a simple phone and pay as you go but I want another device with all the abitlity of the iphone without being a phone. It can be bigger like Nokia's N810 but apple and better than the current touch.

And the iphone is ONE phone vs the dozens upon dozens sold that use WM.

Please keep in context with the thread. The claim was that the iPhone outsold all WM phones.

Btw, the iPhone has been TWO models so far, with submodels for memory size.

But people still lump all their sales together. And they will even if Apple splits it into multiple regular, pro and nano versions. It's a natural comparison like between all Macs and all PCs. :)

I want tog et an iPhone, my contrac with my current mobile provider just finished but i'm still hesitant until apple sorts out the email/push functionality and the non ability to edit word and excel documents.

In a work enviroment, once you have had the blackberry experience i find going to anything else lacking

Better camera would be nice but not essential.

You ACTUALLY work on your word and excel files on your Blackberry??
LOL .... Geez man ... get a laptop!!:D

Indeed, hardware jumps would be welcome.

I agree, I still have my Original iPhone mostly because of the way apple sell the device but also the jump wasn't that great (apart from the jump from very old tech to standard tech with 3G which they scrimped out on the original iPhone). If apple add a few more hardware changes such as a better camera and better battery life with upped specs might tempt me to switch.

However the updates I would like are mostly software based.

I'll have to disagree. :) At first I thought it wouldn't warrant the cost, but when I was able to sell my original 16GB iPhone for $500 and the 16GB iPhone 3G cost me $299, the extra $200 goes to paying the $10 increase in service over the next 2yrs, it was only a $40 premium to have the then "latest and greatest" iPhone. I also had no idea how useful the GPS would be, not only here in Manhattan and finding stuff around me, but also my trips to WV, NH, PA all gave great directions with the GPS enabled. :) Now is the time it would be hard to get teh latest and greatest, since the last iPhone 3G I purchased included AT&T's carrier discount and I doubt most of us will be able to upgrade without paying a "price penalty".

Whenever you browse a website information about the browser you are using is passed to the site's servers. This information contains certain details such as operating system, browser, browser version etc. Have you seen on these forums when someone has this on their post:

Wirelessly posted (iPhone: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20)

It is essentially this information that is passed on to the site/ad provider. Those freeware applications that are ad supported will use the browser feature to get the adverts into the applications and as such that information is passed on.

Hope that helps explain it.

I'm a little confused though. Where in that information does it say which version of iPhone it is. It's got software and safari build information, but nowhere does it say 'iPhone 1,2'. Where does this iPhone 2,1' tag come from?!?!? Is there additional user agent information beyond this?

Sorry if this is something obvious I'm missing, but it doesn't really explain it to me personally...

Thanks.
Paul

I hope this time we'll get copy and paste.

No, wait. We are just going to get copy on the 3rd generation iphone and paste for the 4th one. That's how Apple works isn't it?

mostly because of the way apple sells the device

I am not on an official contract and as such not eligible for upgrades and don't want to pay the huge extra monthly costs.

:D

Ahh, so no matter what you pay full price. I see your point. :)

Why don't people get someone to MMS to YOUR BLOODY EMAIL ADDRESS? MMS works if people send it to your email. Just tell your friends. It's not a hard thing to do. You can also reply that way.
Yes it is a hard thing to do. Girlfriends, mothers and everyone else that doesn't want to deal with typing in an email address just to send a simple mms message, will agree.

So this is going to sound stupid, but how come when I post here from my iPhone, I don't see that in my posts but I see it for others? Did I miss something? :)

I don't know if this is a good idea or not but it would be nice to sync wirelessly over a network to load music etc, it seems I'm always loosing my iPod usb cable. Maybe that would be a good reason to throw in an 802.11 n chip to keep the speed up. In my opinion it is ridiculous that it is not currently capable of MMS, I always wondered why too, that's the main reason that I don't' have one. I think it's kind of crappy that my $50 Samsung has this thing beat in the area of messaging functionality.

Essentially that information, however it is most likely a bit beyond it, for example they will know you IP and probably a few other facts such as model number. For example visit: http://igx.net/whatami.html

It comes up if you post from the http://mobile.macrumors.com forum and have the setting enabled. I assume, like myself, you just visit the normal https://forums.macrumors.com and thus it won't come up.

It's a pet peeve of mine when some sites assume you want the mobile site. I usually don't. I pay for 3G service for a reason. :)

It isn't 3G that determines whether you should visit a mobile site or not, it is the actual device. The iPhone is capable of showing full websites as they are (minus Flash). Other mobiles are not, so 3G or not, they have to use the mobile version.

I know that. But I pay for 3G so I have faster connection, hence I want full versions of the site, not mobile ones. ESPN for example always puts me to their mobile site, when I'd rather view the full site. MySpace did the same thing but finally put a link on the bottom if you wanted to view the normal site. :)

Hell, my first hard drive was a whoppin' 47 MBs (paid almost $700 for it as well). Okay, I admit it... I'm old.

My first HD was 5 Megabytes, about the size of a toolbox and cost $7,000 (1979-1980)... now, that's old.

At the time IBM had 5 Megabyte mainframe drives, the size of a wash-machine, that cost $3,000 a month.

Just to stoke the fire a little, it says "there’s been a few connections over AT&T’s network". Does the analytics say specific carriers? or do they just assume a phone connection is from AT&T?

Bravo. Instead of responding with a valid argument you opted for a childish response.

I guess I'll leave you be with dreams of a 58MP iPhone since MP are what matters most.

I think you need Mega Pixel therapy . Why would you take offense with that kind of comment. So what if I want a camera with 256 MP so I can produce a picture that can be viewed with some clarity from mars. If you read my response to the post that I was responding to, I would hope that one could see I was being cynical in my response to the post that I was responding to. Ah you have to love the macrumors. why does everyone want to argue..why cant we all just get along. You see it in nature all the time, a parasitic virus and a host, Rosie Odonnel and her cheescake. Bob dole and viagra. I want to be the cheesecake...now I just to find my Rosie.

There are a lot of iPhone apps that "phone home". For example TapDefense posts your high scores to a central server, and even uses your location for advertising. It's time for these developers to start sending themselves back some "extra" information, like screen resolution (and physical size if available), maybe the results of a simple processor benchmark, system RAM, etc. I'm not a lawyer, but maybe they could say it's for quality control, or better targeted ads, etc.

Of course, if Apple is smart, they already have an outbound firewall running on these prototypes (e.g. Little Snitch).

Look on your menu bar...

Sweet! I never knew that. I was wondering how people could write "Wall•E," ® and © so quickly. Nice tip!

Go to your System Prefs > International > Input Menu > Click Keyboard Viewer. This show up on your menu bar as a little country flag (depending on the language you have chosen), with a drop down menu and and item called Keyboard Viewer. It shows a keyboard and if you touch your option (alt), shift, control, or any combination of those keys you see exactly what you get. After a short while you just memorize the ones you need. It's really handy, and has been around on Macs (in one form or another) for decades.

You can also select the Show Character Palette and scroll through all the symbols and characters, then click on the one you need. Slower, but useful.

I guess the real question is: new iPhone or iPhone nano?

If it's a update to the regular iPhone then I'll be selling my 3G as soon as it comes out (unlocked, that way I'll get more cash! :p)
