I'm very successful for my age, well ... any age I guess, and I dress well most of the time and feel ( mostly ) comfortable around rich people and businesses

* slaps him *

That is hands-down the most pretentious thing I have ever heard on these forums. Furthermore, if you are so well-to-do, then why are you coming to a bunch of strangers for advice on a life-long decision?

If thats true...to gloat?

Which only makes me laugh harder.

Another piece of carbon sold for more than its worth to someone who thinks itll buy him the happiness of her. So sad that DeBeers marketing has worked so damn well this past century.

You both apparently didn't read any further into the thread to see why I said that.

This "reading further" practice you speak of, isn't followed by most MacRumors board members. Furthermore, some even "read further" but just don't pay enough gosh darn attention! lol

do not get into debt getting the ring. If you are about to start your life together, think of security for the new family.
Wise words. Going into debt for an extravagant wedding, ring and honeymoon is not a good way to start a life together.

Not all women like jewelry.
Good point.

I actually think i'll propose with a Claddagh Ring since I'm Irish, then we could go out together and pick out the ring she wants ... How does that sound?
Sounds like a good idea. :)

Personally, I think that the meaning behind the ring is more important than the ring itself. Some have mentioned huge diamonds, carat and larger. The key is for the diamond and setting to match the lady. :)

it is far and away the best place I've found to research what to look for in a diamond and where to purchase one.

Read about the 4 C's (Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat), and why you can be flexible with them and still get the same end results. Learn about what an "Idealscope" and "ASET" image are. If you do the research, you can find something much better (bigger/brighter) than a Tiffany diamond for a lot less.

If name brand, status, or numbers (wrt color/clarity) are important, go the Tiffany's route.

Tiffany's is the name. It looks nice, and may be reasonably good quality, but a large portion of the money you put down is just for the little "Tiffany & Co." engraved inside the band.

Buy her an antique engagement ring and propose with that. They're not exactly cheap, but they're unique, without being 'custom'... This way also, she's got a ring that no one else can possibly have, which as nice as a Tiffany may sound any slob with enough money can go buy EXACTLY the same thing. Local jewellers always have some antique rings on hand.

I agree with Melrose.

If what you are saying is really true, then a ring from Tiffany & Co. shouldn't even be a consideration.
