If this is true I feel the Australian Consumer Commission will not like it.

Apple could be in for trouble. Why can’t they enable it on all the older iPads now? And using a new name is misleading that it’s actually something new.

If I don’t offer a feature I never promised, and then make a different product that does have the feature, the ACC complains?

People complaining on here likely won't notice the difference in performance of a so called A13X/A14X chip and would most likely dump their iPad Pro long before they feel any slow downs due to software updates. SMH

It's more likely they improved yields to the point where all eight cores are functional when produced and therefore can enable it while the A12X likely had one core fail.
Excellent points. And this was basically confirmed based on speculation of yield rates of these chips. Intel is rumored to have yield rates in the 60% range, while TSMC potentially as high as 80%.

I predict we don’t see a new iPad Pro with A14X until next Spring or potentially WWDC 2021. I know Kuo is predicting this Fall but in light of current events I can’t imagine a new iPad Pro that soon.Who knows though.

People who don’t have an iPad Pro, or who have an ipad older than 2018, get a slightly better ipad if they buy one today than if they bought one last month?

"Slightly" being the operative word here. Anyone who didn't have an iPad Pro prior to this would have been just fine buying the 2018. As others have indicated, the iPad Pro is capable enough with the A12X, and the camera is useless for the majority of users. Seems they should have just held off and put something more substantial out later.

Well, I guess if you do t care about the camera, then it’s basically a storage bump (and effectively price drop) similar to What happened with the Mac Mini.

BTW - I don’t know why they call the Mac Mini “new”, just a price drop for additional storage.

Not surprised. Had to a buy a cellular 11" iPP last night for work, so I care less about this now than I would have if I was buying it for personal use. <As a work expense, I can write it off on next year's taxes...grateful I can do that.>

Considering I am using this as a compliment for remote work, as long as the iPP does what I need it to that's plenty. The extra ram plus minor price cut certainly helps though.

Yes, I forgot. Additional RAM is part of the bump. That’s a plus. I think it went from 4GB to 6GB on some models. I have a base iPad with 3GB. I must say that it is fine for basic stuff, web, mail, messages, iWork, notes, photos, etc.. If I was doing complex video or photo editing, it might be a problem.

It’s my impression that the IPad processors have outdistanced the software for years, but RAM has been an issue from time to time.

This update is really cool
people who complain just because the benchmark is not 10% better than the previous gen are weird, real life usage is the most important aspect, pretty sure that even in 5 years it will still be a powerful machine !

This release continues to be baffling. What really was the point?

If it’s one thing I have learnt about Apple all these years, it’s that everything is done for a reason. The takeaways often end up being related more to how Apple is setting the stage for the future. Certain announcements and features make much more sense when thinking about what Apple will likely unveil the following year.

The rumours point to AR being one of the main focus for this year’s WWDC event. Perhaps the refreshed iPad Pro is a way of getting lidar-equipped devices in the hands of developers prior to the release of the iphone 12 later this year? The extra ram might come in handy for running heavier AR apps.

I agree, there will not be another IPP release this year.

So essentially they gave us LiDAR support and nothing else. 🤷🏻‍♂️

And Wifi 6, 128 GB of base storage, better microphones, and an extra 2 GB of RAM.

It seems the iPad Pro 2020 will become the next iPad 3 in the future iPadOS.

please elaborate? I owned an iPad 3. And the hardware was vastly underpowered for the Retina display. Nothing about this iPad is underpowered. Not in the same ballpark in terms of comparison. Another iPad this year? All rumors. And if the rumors are true, they also state it will be more expensive.

Go read some real world testing on the 2020 vs the 2018. The cooling system has vastly improved performance. The 2018 was throttled during heavy tasks for thermal considerations. 6 gigs of ram. Better WiFi. Double storage at the same price point. Solid update.

The bellyaching is strong in this community. Don’t like this model? Don’t buy it. Keep waiting for “next gen” while I enjoy the here and now.

One month ago 799$ would get you a 64Gb 11" iPP with 4Gb Ram and a single camera.
Today, same 799$ gets you a 128 Gb 11" iPP with 6Gb RAM and a dual camera + LiDAR, so of course it's a better value.

This is a refresh not meant for 2018 iPP owners but for previous gens owners.
Apple already understood that most iPad users upgrade every 4 years or more.

OK, but why? This LIDAR features are ready, both in hardware and software (ARKit 3.5). The ultra-wide lens is ready. The yield has improved enough to add the eighth GPU core.

I'm baffled that people seem to prefer Apple didn't launch any iPad Pro upgrade at all.

It's just a speedbump. So what?

No...because likely the poster was anticipating a faster/better chip that IS WORTH plunking down $1000 for a product that hasn't been refreshed in 2+ years. The chip could have had a very similar name AND had much better performance, faster MHz, more cores, or a combination of all 3. Instead, it's just 1 core that was magically enabled by Apple.

Regardless of how people can rationalize Apple's decision, this is a very shady step by Apple. This is a Pro unit which means most of the people evaluating an upgrade are going to look at the tech specs (and not to mention the hefty price tag). This marketing/advertising scam was caught very quickly and Apple should be ashamed and likely will have poor sales.

And someone said here that the "real excitement is the new keyboard in May." Seriously?! People wait 2+ years for an upgrade (on a "Pro" device no less) and a)there's essentially no hardware upgrade and b)I have to wait several more months after the launch for the "real excitement" which c)just turns out to be a bleeping keyboard that d)costs several hundred bucks?!

Wow.

I honestly laughed at shady.

I dont get it, either. After 1,5 years waiting they release a product (pro) thats almost identical to its predecessor, with the same hefty price tag, on the other hand, rumors say there will be another release in fall, that makes no sense, they should have skipped this. I dont care whether the A12X/Z has enough power for most used cases, for a price tag over 1000$ and a product called "pro", I ecpect the fastest possible chipset, regardless of wheter i need it or not. They changed nothing, except the camera on the back, which is extremely important in a tablet, not. Oh okay, they added another 2gb of ram, wow.

Why should they have skipped it? To prevent people that can't keep their wallet in their pants from buying it? It's not like Apple had a big media event for this.

Not everyone has a Gen 3 iPad so it's a small incremental improvement with some extra benefits. Macs get small speed bumps periodically in a similar manner.

Yields on the part improved so the additional core is available now, pretty straightforward. There's no reason NOT to allow the additional core at this point but people would have absolutely melted down if they had kept producing the iPad under the old model number with the extra core enabled.

Apple could be in for trouble. Why can’t they enable it on all the older iPads now? And using a new name is misleading that it’s actually something new.

I guess they are really angry with Intel then. How do they reconcile the "k" CPU parts being better binned parts than the non-k?

That's what is happening here. The old SOC couldn't be produced in sufficient quantity for the 8th core to be enabled so they disabled 1 core rather than discarding much of their production. Now they've binned a bunch of perfect silicon and yields are likely much better, so they make a small tweak to the model number and enable all cores. This is how the whole industry works whether it's CPUs or GPUs. Sometimes frequency is varied as well.

Where do people come from with this "a device that haven't been upgraded in 2+ years ...".
The 2018 iPad Pro was released less than 1 year and 5 months ago, meaning less than 1.5 years ago.

People like to round up or down to make their outrage seem more justified.

Considering how underwhelming the new iPad Pro is compared to the previous gen, it’s probably best that Apple wasn’t able to host an event. The fact is, there really isnt much to talk about other than LiDAR along with a slight bump in ram and storage space.

There was never any rumor of a plan to host an event just for iPad Pro.

Holding up a lunch tray to use LieDAR is more awkward than wearing a bulky VR head mounted jock strap. Gimmick that people will try once or twice then forget like 3D touch.
