Just jailbroken successfully, no problems at all (using the VPN fix).

In my case, it rebooted automatically...if it doesn't, I'd restart, tap the Absinthe icon, then go to VPN and see if that works.

I go to my iPhone settings, network, VPN and turn it on. It then pulls up a screen for me to enter all kids of server, etc data.

Can someone please explain the VPN fix as I am continuously getting "Error establishing a database connection".

Also, once I can successfully connect, what am I looking for?

Why do they use such childish names and logos?

who cares about the name and logo? you're getting a tool that takes hours and hours of hard work which most people dont even have the knowledge to do... and you are getting it for free.......and you complain about the name and logo  jeez some people are just beyond ridiculous.

You don't go into Settings > Network just go into Settings and the toggle for VPN should be there.

Oh well, I'm on the last step where you need to launch the Absinthe app, but alas, the connection won't go through as the servers are hammered right now.

Will continue this later.

Nevermind that. Success. :)

I did that VPN "trick" by simply toggling VPN in settings to On and I just waited. The error message came up telling me about a configuration error and I hit Ok. After that, the phone rebooted on it's own. When it came back, Cydia was there. Installing SBSettings now. Life is good.

Btw, I just want to point how how beautiful it is that I was able to do this from work with no WiFi thanks to my MacBook Air, iPhone, tether app that was pulled same-day, and a vanilla bean frapuccino.

uhm... this comment seems to have been missed in the discussion. Anyone else having or not having this issue?
Is it plugged into a power source?

Vpn

For me, I tried clicking on the Greepoison icon and getting "Establish connect to database failed". So, I went to General and turned on VPN. While the icon for the VPN was spinning, I pressed the home button, and went back and clicked on the GP icon again. The system rebooted and when it came back up the GP icon was replaced with the Cydia icon. I am not up and going!

why jail break

I'm not being arrogant, so please try to help me understand why people jailbreak?

Besides being able to tether without dealing with your cell provider, I see that as a big positive but what else?

There are HUNDREDS of apps already available, no need to jailbreak.

Customizable? Doesn't really interest me, that's mostly a cosmetic thing.

What are the real benefits? Plus I hear more stories of people go back because they had more problems having the phone jailbroken.

Thanks

so you can run XBMC on AppleTV (I can play video files from my Windows server)

Could this work on a 4 with iOS5?

You couldn't be any more wrong.

Unfortunately, to be able to unlock your phone you need to have a very specific combination of firmware and baseband, and be jailbroken.

Which phone do you have, which version of iOS are you running and which baseband is it?

I gave my sister my 4 with iOS5 installed and she lives outside of the US. She can't unlock the phone because it was used as an AT&T phone now with iOS5. I don't know the baseband. Would she be able to use this software to jailbreak and then unlock? Sorry if I'm not able to provide the baseband info. I don't even know what it is.

Guys, why do you mark down everyone who asks 'why do you jailbreak'? It's a legit question to people who have never considered it or aren't as 'technical' as you.

It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff. I jailbroke my Apple TV a while ago with XBMC and the only benefit I could see is that it enabled you to view movies in other formats - i.e. movies which had probably been gotten by illegal means. The expense of this 'freedom' is that you have to either forfeit any official updates or rejailbrake every time you update the firmware.

You may be doing this because it give you a perception of freedom - if you want that get Android and Linux, that's not what Apple is about. Apple is a closed platform and works best when it remains so.

Honestly guys I really fail to see what you are trying to achieve other than piracy and when the next virus comes up that affects jailbroken devices don't complain.

because iOS is missing some basic things in its original form ... and it has nothing to do with pirating

little things like notification icons in ur statusbar, live weather icon instead of the same old temperature, unlimited apps in a folder (i dont need 5 folders with games) SB SETTINGS my god apple seriously why cant u come up with a easier way to disable wifi etc without going into settings first. list goes on and on

Finally got a message on the Absinthe Window itself (on the mac) to turn off my passcode lock.

So far still can't get to the server though...

I clicked that Jailbreak button again and it said something like...Looks like you already tried to JB this iPad and it failed. We Will now try to fix that for you.

Then it says Recovery Completed.

But still can't get to the server...

This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android? Im an iPhone user and i like it the way it is. if i wanted a jailbroken one, i would simply get a (cheapier) Android..

is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.

Same reason people root an Android phone...

Why do I jailbreak:

So that if I feel like test driving another mobile OS theme, I can while staying within the iOS ecosystem and being able to revert at anytime..

So that I can control wi-fi, bluetooth, airplane mode and many other settings right from any screen without having to dig through the settings menu

So that I can compose a text message, or view and reply to a text message from any screen including the lock screen without having to go into my SMS app..

I can go on and on with tweaks, themes and other reasons that make jailbreaking awesome, convenient and cool....... I have never pirated an app or any other software for that matter. I have a total of 17 apps on my phone not including the stock apple apps. I only download things that I need and will use and I happily pay for apps that are useful to me. I respect the work of developers and feel they should be compensated and jailbreaking does not change that.

DAMNIT! :)

Which theme is that you're using to skin SBSettings?

But those expectations are real regardless of whether or not they're actual companies, aren't they?

Do they want to attract the largest possible user base or not?

Their naming scheme seems targeted at 12 year old script kiddies. Hackers run Mozilla, and even they have the sense to name a product "Firefox" and not "F1r3f0x".

They don't give a flying **** who uses their jailbreak. The names aren't "targeted" at 12 year old script kiddies; they're just names that they think are cool/nerdy.

And to think that if it had a "normal" name it would attract more users is ridiculous; if someone knows what jailbreaking is, and they want to jailbreak their device, they are gonna do it regardless of the name.

NO ONE is going "hurr durr I really wanted to jailbreak my phone but the program is called Absinthe, instead of something mature like "iPhone Un-restrictor so I won't do it"

Hackers don't code firefox. They do code jailbreak tools.

i think the main reason to jailbreak is to have a fully (as fully as possible any way) customizable phone. As soon as i think of something that I don't like or think needs to be done better on iOS, I search for it in cydia and tweak iOS. Think of it, what you have in the latest iOS has been around for ages on the jailbreak scene.

NOT working for me.. i am from new jersey(IN case location matters).

No matter which vpn trick I use, it just does not reboot. Anyone having issue like me from New jersey?
