You're out of luck for now I'm afraid, but there might be news on the horizon as this article suggests:
http://iphoneblogr.com/2011/11/upcoming-ultrasn0w-update-to-unlock-iphone-4s-on-baseband-1-0-11/
Just make sure you stay on 5.0.1 for now, even if 5.1 comes out to make sure you don't upgrade your baseband.
Someone try this:
Turn off your iPhone. Does it stay turned off? Mine reboots immediately. It can't stay off after being jailbroken. Weird
Just jailbroken successfully, no problems at all (using the VPN fix).
In my case, it rebooted automatically...if it doesn't, I'd restart, tap the Absinthe icon, then go to VPN and see if that works.
Why do they use such childish names and logos?
I go to my iPhone settings, network, VPN and turn it on. It then pulls up a screen for me to enter all kids of server, etc data.
Can someone please explain the VPN fix as I am continuously getting "Error establishing a database connection".
Also, once I can successfully connect, what am I looking for?
Is it plugged into a power source?uhm... this comment seems to have been missed in the discussion. Anyone else having or not having this issue?
You don't go into Settings > Network just go into Settings and the toggle for VPN should be there.

I'm not being arrogant, so please try to help me understand why people jailbreak?
Besides being able to tether without dealing with your cell provider, I see that as a big positive but what else?
There are HUNDREDS of apps already available, no need to jailbreak.
Customizable? Doesn't really interest me, that's mostly a cosmetic thing.
What are the real benefits? Plus I hear more stories of people go back because they had more problems having the phone jailbroken.
Thanks
You couldn't be any more wrong.
Unfortunately, to be able to unlock your phone you need to have a very specific combination of firmware and baseband, and be jailbroken.
Which phone do you have, which version of iOS are you running and which baseband is it?
Guys, why do you mark down everyone who asks 'why do you jailbreak'? It's a legit question to people who have never considered it or aren't as 'technical' as you.
It seems to me that the only people who want to jailbreak their phones, etc are those who just want to pirate and leach stuff. I jailbroke my Apple TV a while ago with XBMC and the only benefit I could see is that it enabled you to view movies in other formats - i.e. movies which had probably been gotten by illegal means. The expense of this 'freedom' is that you have to either forfeit any official updates or rejailbrake every time you update the firmware.
You may be doing this because it give you a perception of freedom - if you want that get Android and Linux, that's not what Apple is about. Apple is a closed platform and works best when it remains so.
Honestly guys I really fail to see what you are trying to achieve other than piracy and when the next virus comes up that affects jailbroken devices don't complain.
This is a serious question and i hope someone could answer it. I dont get why people keep jailbreaking their iPhone instead of just getting an android? Im an iPhone user and i like it the way it is. if i wanted a jailbroken one, i would simply get a (cheapier) Android..
is it because of the apps? I really just want to know.
So that I can control wi-fi, bluetooth, airplane mode and many other settings right from any screen without having to dig through the settings menu

But those expectations are real regardless of whether or not they're actual companies, aren't they?
Do they want to attract the largest possible user base or not?
Their naming scheme seems targeted at 12 year old script kiddies. Hackers run Mozilla, and even they have the sense to name a product "Firefox" and not "F1r3f0x".

Which theme is that you're using to skin SBSettings?
