All music in iTunes is now 100% DRM free (see attachment).

iTunes is still higher quality than Amazon (AAC > MP3).
.

like any 'everyday' listener would notice...
and if you happen to be those people with high quality ear/headphones and who care about song quality that much, you wouldnt be using an iPod as an MP3 player and you would go FLAC.

This is bad, this is really bad. It's not only bad for us but for certain artists. Artists work hard at their music and it just is not a fair way of doing things.

While I'm no big fan of variable pricing ( especially upwards deltas )
If the cap is $1.29 USD, I am shocked with my own lack of worry... the biggest reason being, we get 256K AAC now *and* DRM free? That latter alone justified the price to me... To be able to have my songs I already paid for at home and work without the stupidity of ipod synchronization ( one is a mac and one is a PC and I don't want all the songs synched between both systems )

I really think this is not a half bad deal.

I don't know about the other "new" countries, but Brazil is only in that list because it has iPhones, so the store does NOT sell music, only iPhone apps. It's kinda irrelevant given the context of this piece of news...

And yet I still have songs that cannot be upgraded. As far as my searching has found so far, "DRM-free" means they've pulled anything from the store that couldn't be upgraded.
.

I was waiting to buy an album when it went itunes plus, but instead it's now gone. And it's not available at the amazon mp3 store. Great! One step forward two giant leaps back.

Don't support this... Only buy .69 and .99 tracks and the trend will change. Please... Otherwise this will be the end of iTunes as we know it.

Exactly. Let the music companies feel it, they are the crooks here. The thing is, most people just go with the flow. If you stop going with the flow the trend has to change because they rather have some money as opposed to none.

the real question is how amazon is getting such a better rate. Apple isn't going to be able to compete for long

where are the.69 songs? I haven't seen any.

We'll probably never see a $0.69 song. They probably only announced it to keep flaming to a minimum. Trust me, anything the masses desire is going to be $0.99 or $1.29 so you better get used to it.

Don't whine, it's a business. Businesses want to make money.

Yes businesses want to make money. But when it's done off of the backs of others it's wrong plain and simple.

Because the music companies are using them to play against Apple. They hate the influence Apple now has with music thanks to ipod/itunes so they cut a deal with Amazon to try to lessen iTunes' influence.

You can bet that the second the music companies feel they are back in control, Amazon's pricing will go up too.

Wow, funny, it was said at MacWorld that most of the songs new price points would be set at $.69. However, I am yet to see one of those songs where as singles from bands that where released in the 80's are at $1.29. Thanks a lot music labels, I'm glad I went on an iTunes shopping spree the other weekend. I knew this was going to happen .

So, basically, the people who are already making most of the money are making more money now? That makes perfect sense

Why the heck are really old songs also $1.29?

I just checked some of my personal favorites, like Bon Jovi's Living on a Prayer.. yep, $1.29.

Shouldn't they make the newer, rabidly popular stuff $1.29 so they can make extra money, and give us a break on the classics?

This new pricing is screwed up. I just started buying from iTunes again, looks like I'll be returning to Amazon.

Idiots...

Lets see how long they keep those prices, either they are selling at a loss or the labels will stop giving it to them for cheaper.

Yeah, just browsing around I haven't found a $0.69 song yet. Sorry, but digital music is not worth an extra 30% to me.

They are either selling at a loss or the record companies are giving it to them for cheaper, I don't see that lasting long. Most of the songs I see are still .99 with a few .69 and 1.29 here and there.

Not that we need any more evidence that the folks running the record companies are astonishingly stupid, but this one takes the cake. Raising the price (and just a cursory check on iTunes this morning shows that, ultimately, the real definition of "variable pricing" is in fact raising the price) in the midst of the worst global economic recession in history is just plain idiotic.

LOL, the majority of the songs are still .99, with a few 1.29 and .69, people are acting as if all the songs are 1.29.

This really shouldn't be allowed. The labels are trying to limit iTunes' dominance by forcing it to be more expensive than Amazon.

iTunes built its influence by merit. It had the only workable digital download business model at the time, and it took off like a rocket. Now the labels are fixing prices to make it less successful.

If I create a business with an innovative new format and it becomes successful because of merit, and the suppliers collude with each other to bring me down. Well, business shouldn't work like that. If you want to take the market and become the new leader, you do it with new business models and listening to consumers - that's the way markets are supposed to work. By competition for the best service.

This is collusion. The labels are running a cartel to bring down iTunes' market share. I'm appalled they're able to get away with it. Ultimately, consumers are losing out. There's increased competition, but the new services aren't giving us anything more.

The only people losing out here are the record labels.

Artists get most of their money from live shows any way, so they aren't too bothered.

The iTunes Store only exists to provide content for the iPod, but people are shopping around now, and yet the iPod's market share continues to grow.

It's the record labels who need people to spend more money on music, and yet they go and screw us over with random price changes and making us look everywhere for the best deals... Well screw them, I used to buy loads from iTunes, now I just use the pirate bay.

Who's getting screwed over now, dickfaces?

Music on the iTunes "App" Store? It's called the iTunes Store, last time I checked. App store is for apps.

Sorry to be pedantic!

you people do realize this is the first day of this....so what if there isnt any $0.69...give it some time..jeez...do you think apple didnt stipulate the type of songs that are to be marked down???

i wouldnt be surprised if apple made the record labels sign on to something along the lines of if you sell less than X copies of this song during the week, you will go to $0.69. If you sell more than X copies of this song, you can charge $1.29

give it time....
