PC World reports on Adobe's launch of Flash Player 10.1, which aims to integrate the Flash experience across a wide range of devices, including smartphones. The initiative also includes the Open Screen Project, which brings together nearly 50 companies aiming to create a consistent user experience for Flash across the various platforms.

Notably absent from the smartphone aspects of today's announcements is Apple, which has not supported Flash on the iPhone OS since its launch despite reports that the two companies have continued to work toward a functional solution.
iPhone owners, however, aren't so lucky. Adobe said that they are still working to make the Flash Player compatible on the iPhone OS, but are hindered by limitations within the platform.
The report also notes some of the features supported by Flash Player 10.1 that Apple may be very interested in taking advantage of given the already advanced capabilities of the iPhone platform.
Flash Player 10.1 opens up some interesting multimedia possibilities for other platforms. The player supports multitouch, accelerometer and screen orientation, all of which makes for the optimal video-watching experience. It also supports gesture-based controls, which is a boon for gaming. Adobe said that the player won't be a drain on battery life, either.

The sooner Flash is replaced the better off we'll all be.

I mean, they can't even manage to get it to run efficiently on a laptop/desktop running OS X, never mind a phone!
 
Why would Apple be interested in ANY of those features? To encourage people to circumvent to SDK? If anything it's proof why we'll never see flash on the iPhone.

Had about 3 windows smartphones prior to getting my iphone when the 3GS came out.

Didn't miss flash on the smartphones, still don't miss it on the iphone. I just don't see what problem it solves on a phone, unless some website designers out there still think "How can I make this website more of a PITA to use?" is a valid problem.
 
Good News

Flash will kill the mobile browsing experience for any smartphone that uses it. Browsing will be slow and crash-heavy because of the memory and processor demands. Likewise, battery life will drop like a brick.

People know what they want: Flash should work on a website just like on a desktop browser. Unfortunately, that's not yet possible, both because Flash is a resource hog and because mobile phones don't have the processor power and memory to run it.

A public beta of Flash Professional CS5 is expected to be available later this year. In a sneak peek, during the MAX keynote presentation, Adobe demonstrated how developers can utilize Flash Professional CS5 to export applications for the iPhone, leveraging the same source code used to deliver applications across desktops and devices for Flash Platform runtimes -- Adobe AIR(TM) and Flash Player 10. The new functionality opens iPhone development to millions of designers and developers who currently use Adobe's popular Flash authoring tools.
 
Off course Adobe likes to publish they made flash for all mobile platforms except iPhone, just want to make an statement against Apple.
 
Like others, I remain to be convinced.

I've got a late 2007 MBP with a decent graphics card, 4GB of RAM and a 7200rpm hard drive. And every single time I spend more than 10 minutes watching anything in Flash, the fans pump up to 6,000rpm and the base of the machine becomes too hot to touch.

Pathetic, frankly. And they really think this should run on phones? Sheesh.

everyone said this about MMS too, "WHAT A USELESS TECHNOLOGY" "EMAIL IS BETTER" very familiar justification rant. The truth is that theres nobody except apple to blame here. Once again apple has decided, apparently, to be the lone ranger. Precisely why this long time apple lover sold his iPhone and got a blackberry bold, and hasn't looked back. In fact there's been nothing but reasons why I'm glad that i did. Sorry but the WE DON'T NEED FLASH rhetoric is just absurd. Every other Smartphone will have it.
 
I cannot believe how negative you are all being. Would you be saying the same things if they had announced iPhone support today?

Face it. As usual Apple is getting in the way of progress. This is the company that sold two generations of a phone which was capable of video recording, but made sure it didn't happen so that they could sell a new, more expensive model two years down the line.

Flash is the standard for online animation, vector graphics and most importantly - video. If iPhone doesn't support Flash then those looking to distribute content to users have to come up with other ways of getting it to the users. If you're lucky you get it from places like Fox News and BBC, but the majority see that it doesn't make commercial sense to encode video another time just so that a tiny fraction of mobile phones will support it.

by we, u mean exclusive mac users.

flash runs much smoother on a PC, even a netbook.

and it apparently will run wm and webos and other mobile OS.

mac!= all laptop/desktops
iPhone!= all phones

and you make statement like you have no idea how tight apple control what can be on iPhone, do you really?
 
I am happy there's no Flash on the iPhone. 😀

If it ever does come to the platform, I hope there's a switch to turn it off.
