It's just a matter of self preservation. Adobe is a 15 billion dollar company. I have no idea how much Flash accounts (for profits) but I imagine many millions. That's many reasons to "insist" in maintaining a (crap) technology.

-Say anything that might change some opinions, even if it is BS!

Adobe (ADBE in NYSE) just PROVES it is a CORRUPT company.

Adobe has moved on...

So did many Apple customers...

Good Job Steve!

The first time I read this I thought you meant that many Apple customers had moved on from needing/caring about Flash. and I was like "Yup, sure have"

Then I saw your sig.

The best Flash experience? Ha. The best Flash experience is one that doesn't exist. iPhone and ClickToFlash FTW!

The iPhone people are really missing out on mobile flash. I own 2 Apple computers, but my phone is a Droid, because of flash and because of the network (another discussion!). It is so awesome to be able to click on a video link and have it actually work. I can't imagine being shut off from so much of the current internet.

My battery life is still great - I normally last an entire day of heavy usage.
Only the flash content that I want to see is loaded, so I'm not inundated with a bunch of ads. I just tap on the video I want to see.

As far as flash being obsolete - hahaha is all I can muster. It will be around for years.

Of course Adobe is moving on - they know Apple will not budge, and Android is growing extremely quickly, with a huge variety of devices on many carriers, at almost every price point.

It seems like Apple is getting away with their decision to not support flash, but it might be because of how clueless so many people are. Most people I talk to have no idea what flash is or that Apple doesn't have it.

Let's hope for Apple's sake that flash gets phased out sooner rather than later.

How to talk out of both sides of your mouth

One side of Narayen's mouth says this:
"we've moved on."
while the other side continues to throw stones at Apple:
"We believe in open systems. We believe in the power of the internet and in customers making choices."
(read: Apple is against these things.)

"We'd rather focus on people who want to deliver the best experience with Flash and there are so many of them."
(read: Other vendors know better than Apple how to provide the best user experience.)

Keep crying, baby!

Seriously, Adobe should actually spend the anti-Apple PR money to make Flash usable.

Glass House

Adobe should not live in a glass house! Let's remember how they treated Apple when Apple was not the "hot" company in town. And, back then Adobe gave Apple the short end of the stick for nontechnical reasons.

BTW how is that goal of 250million phones with Flash going?

Flash, what's Flash?

I remotely remember something about this thing but can't discover what

Two thoughts:

1. Adobe believes in being open? Then open Flash. Until then they can just shut up.

2. Adobe wants to ignore Apple? Bad move. That's 100 million device owners who cannot see those Flash ads. Who wants to ignore that market? You know, the market that actually is proven to spend money? Stupid to think the Android market can compensate. That's the free market, not the market that is willing to spend the big bucks.

Foot -> mouth.

It's the other way around, Apple is ignoring Adobe. And Apple doesn't want Flash ads, they want iAds on your phone. This isn't about the consumer, it's about Apple retaining full control (be it by preventing Flash devs in compiling their stuff into native iPhone apps or by controlling the ads you see, by removing Flash from mobile Safari and preventing AdMob from obtaining targeting information about you that they do collect themselves).

It is free. You're the one that is full of BS. Flash CS5 is one tool, Adobe does provide others, like the Flex SDK which are free. For an IDE, you can use Eclipse, which has a plug-in for it.

Not to mention the spec to SWF files is published and open source implementations are being done (see Gnash, the GNU Flash runtime).

Thanks, I needed my fill of geek speak for the day.

Flash should stick to what it was originally made for - Vector Animations.

Sorry but what am I missing out on? Flash ads? Website created by people who don't know how to create a real website and instead used flash to create an online brochure? Does flash even work right on your Android phone? No. Stop deluding yourself. Many flash websites crash the browser on your droid phone.

The sooner flash is dead, the better for all of us including people with disabilities. I might not have any problem navigating a flash website but I believe strongly that government and crown corporation sites should be free of flash to ensure that they are accessible to all citizens. I am looking at you BCLC. Get that flash crap off your website already.

Does your foot taste good?

I was talking about opening the source to Flash and letting it be controlled by any company that wants to use it any way they want to use it. Precisely as people constantly say they want to use iOS.

It's the other way around, Apple is ignoring Adobe.

Still got that foot in your mouth I see. No, in the context of this story and this thread, it's about Adobe moving on and ignoring Apple.

With all the people wanting Adobe to burn to the ground, I hope you've all uninstalled Photoshop, Illustrator, Lightroom, etc.

I'd love to see how many more people would start whining if they discontinued those products for the Mac.

In fact, I've avoided all Adobe products for years. They've been bad news and I want nothing to do with them.

Good for you. There are MILLIONS of people (myself included) that use and depend on Adobe products like Photoshop and Lightroom.

All of a sudden they've turned into the next Google and somehow its become taboo to mention them around here in any positive light whatsoever.

With all the hate these two companies get around here you'd think everyone would welcome giving up all Google and Adobe products but I can guarantee you that if both companies stopped supporting anything Apple, there would be even more people giving up on Apple instead.

A lot of stupid anti Flash posts on this thread. Flash is alive and doing well... on other platforms. Android is coming on fast and has been over-taking the iPhone in many markets. Android allows Flash. That is why Adobe is moving on, while trying to improve the experience for Mac users.

Flash in itself has been overused (by many hack designers tying to get it to do what it wasn't designed for) and underdeveloped for Apple platforms. HTML looks good, but it's not a substitute for Flash; it is not the same thing unless you are only talking about video.

I hate Flash for how it's been abused (crap websites and web advertising), but I also like Flash when it's done well. And, yes... there are a lot of really great things that have been done with Flash that couldn't have been done for the web otherwise. Should we limit opportunities or keep trying to improve?

Well said.

This decision makes sense. They have had much support from Google and are now shipping Flash 10.1 for Android and even carriers are starting to bundle it.

People that are making this out to be a Flash vs HTML5 choice are blind. There is no choice. You can support both at the same time. Only in Apple's world does Adobe need to lose for HTML5 to win.

Exactly. HTML5 is not a Flash replacement and all these people who think Ads are going away because of this are crazy. HTML5 isn't even close to being the standard let alone drive Flash away. As for Adobe, they have only owned Flash for the last 5 years.

Drink more kool-aid. I use CS5 on a daily basis at work, and it is a pleasure to use. I have yet to see a full suite of products that even comes remotely close to its quality.

Both Adobe and Apple make CLOSED software. The difference is that Adobe wants their software to be available on as many platforms as possible (that's where they get the "open systems" thing you guys keep confuses for "open source"), while apple wants their software to be locked to their own hardware.
