Oh come on now....that doesn't even make sense in comparison....

It would be like allowing you to play wii games but then disabling your A and B buttons and just saying "well....there are other buttons....so when the game prompts you to use those ones just....go play another system".

Now THAT is more like it.

You want a much better one ?

Microsoft allowing Xcode to run on Windows.;)

Apple's share of the mobile phone / browser market is large enough that the suit may be similar in some ways to the Microsoft Windows antitrust suit.

What is Apple's marketshare of the mobile phone and browser market?

How about try to innovate instead of litigate?

Adobe has unfortunately become a company that simply makes bad products, and the market has spoken. We don't want Flash, we don't like Shockwave, and we don't like bloated software. We don't like how bloated and ugly Photoshop is, and they're mad about this.

They can litigate all the want, but I'll be the first to say I'm very supportive of Apple not putting Flash in their products. In fact, on my MBP my favorite Safari plugin is Click2Flash. I hate flash. It's slow, overused, and a memory hog.

:apple:++;
adobe--;

And personally, I hope they stop selling software for the Mac OS. They'll be hanging themselves for the executioner. No serious graphics shop is using anything other than OS X. Sorry Adobe, you missed the boat, by a few years and a few thousand miles.

Not. Even. Close.

Apple has maybe 15% of the smartphone market, and far less if you include basic flip phones.

And it's irrelevant anyway. In the case of MS, they had a product (IE) and they were using their monopoly in the OS market to push that product.

Apple does not product a Flash equivalent; HTML5 is an open standard. Now, if Apple were to block out, say, alternative web browsers on the iPhone, then THAT might be anti-competitive. But as we've seen, that isn't the case.

And I think GM should be forced to put Ford's new 5.0 V8 in the Corvette because I like that engine better then the LS3.

Try again. It isn't illegal for Apple to have a closed ecosystem. So Apple can't be forced to do anything by the courts. Don't like it? Buy something else. That is the only way you can force Apple to do something by effecting their revenue.

I don't agree with your analogy simply because those two industries are different worlds with vastly different regulatory laws. A company like Apple is usually okay to execute this level of control over it's ecosystem when their market share is relatively minimal (as the Mac OS has been throughout it's existence), however, now that Apple is dominating in the mobile OS market, regulators might find this to be an anti-trust situation. A more parallel (no pun intended) analogy would be the Microsoft/Netscape situation and, given those results, Apple might be in trouble and this might be the next epic tech lawsuit. Believe it or not, Apple is almost the Microsoft of the mobile OS right now.

By the way, I give you props for picking Quagmire as your username. Cracks me up every time.

Amazing how many mac fans will back Apple regardless. It's bad news for all of us when Apple begin to decide what we can or can't use on the systems we buy from them. I'm a Mac fan but far from being liberators, Apple are masters at restricting technology to avoid any competition with their products. HTC and Google must be rubbing their hands with glee at this latest development. It's only going to damage Apple's image.

Apple's share of the mobile phone / browser market is large enough that the suit may be similar in some ways to the Microsoft Windows antitrust suit.

Not even close. Check your facts before posting.

Anti-competitive behaviour. Ask Microsoft how it feels to loose that battle...

Basically its about time, Apple is dominating several markets and actively preventing competition. They deserve and need a rap on the knuckles.

What markets are Apple dominating? ONLY mp3 players. And they are allowing anyone who wants to to join the party. Sony, Creative, MS. Problem is the public doesn't care. In any other category Apple may be setting the bar, but they have NO monopoly positions. Also, Apple is not shutting anyone out. Any developer can go and download Apple's FREE SDK (which I have, maybe you have as well) and develop an application for the iPhone/Pad/Pod Touch. Apple's is only shutting out alternative development environments, which is neither a monopoly NOR illegal.

Hopefully Adobe loses this if it's true, they need a corporate shakedown and a huge wakeup call to realize oh hey, maybe our products do really suck and are bloated.

Adobe is making themselves look really bad here... They are acting like a child having a temper tantrum, especially with the blog wars(and statements whether or not you say "not on behalf of Adobe")

I don't agree with either company at this point, the whole thing is stupid, but Apple can allow whatever support they want on their platform whether it is a good decision or not. The only reason Adobe is angry is because they basically had made a work around for flash apps and Apple thwarted it before it even released... next time work on a partnership and see if you can work something out to mutually benefit both companies before you decide to invest time into a product feature.

Wouldn't it be great if Apple came out with a Design suite that rivals Photoshop/Illustrator and a new FCS with a Motion/Shake that beats the crap out of After Effects?
No reason to ever use crappy Adobe software again.
Make it happen, Steve ;)

This.

If Apple came out with alternatives to Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and After Effects I would make the switch today. I've already moved away from InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere (Windows, what could I use), and Flash.

And i'm going to sue macrumors for
not paying my rent.
Lol!
I'll join in and we can do a class action.

Flash will be pushed out at some time... But i don't get all the hate towards it?

Oh, and you do realize that when HTML5 takes over, the animations will be done through that right? and this will probably take up a whole lot of CPU power as well, more than HTML5 video does!

Go Adobe :)
I don't hate flash, but I don't love it. Really the only time I have the hate on for it is when someone develops a whole site in flash and then it become a pain to navigate. You can really do the browser back button. Blame the designer/developer on that one. I don't mind video's, games or ads in flash. I do mind when I'm asked to install the latest version. It's hassle, but not the end of the world. I think with recent response to Apple closing the door to third party frameworks they're inviting the hate. In the end, I don't care cause I have an android phone and that's because I have the hate on for ATT.

I'm still excited to see what happens. Will Adobe force Apple to open up or will Apple keep flash out... :D

I'm not qualified to comment on any legal matters, but Apple's continued refusal to allow Flash and Flash-sourced content onto their devices is a real roadblock to having a truly usable experience with these toys. The reason for the block is 100% due to Apple protecting their assets (the performance issues are a smokescreen - Apple won't allow Flash to be optimised on their platform). That seems reasonable enough for a walled garden, but until they block off the Internet (cue "Applenet" coming to an iTunes subscription near you :p), they are offering a sub-par experience.

Go Adobe!

Adobe-Apple

I don't really see where Adobe has much of a basis for a case. Anyone can file a suit, just not sure what is the basis.

Also, I find it interesting that so many people are feeling like Adobe is being taken advantage of by the big bad Apple. I think a of people liked it when Apple was the underdog. Would Apple survive or not? They pulled for Apple to make it through the tough days. Well it has. In spades. But too many people miss that underdog feeling.

Many Apple users have enjoyed knowing that they were special. Not everyone had a Mac. Now that more and more have Macs and iPods, iPhones, iPads, we're not in such exclusive company anymore. Our little club ain't so little anymore.

Does it bother me to see some lowlife whip out their iPhone? A little bit. But on the other hand my stock (wish I had more) is doing nicely.

Now that is just stupid on Adobe's part. Honestly, I am a very very very tiny bit sad that its not on the I- devises, but am super glad its not. I'm running the latest 10.1 beta of flash and still have tons of problems. I dont want those crashes, hangs, etc on my I- devises. And I have to agree, it does use tons of power - another huge reason that I support the HTML5 decision in favor of flash. I really dont see how they can win. If anything, Apple should sue Adobe for causing excessive power draw and over heating on their products :p .. that is more likely to win than Adobe crying that they cant get flash on I- devises.. LOL.

"Might as well" isn't going to cut it.

Apple has 15% worldwide smartphone share and 25% US share. In mobile overall they're barely 3%, if that.

The only "Monopoly" going on here is the board game by Parker Brothers, and Apple is winning.

Exactly. Windows had over 90% share in the late 90's when the Government sued Microsoft.

However, facts mean little to half the posters in here. They will stick their fingers in the ears and say "LA LA LA LA LA LA!"

This.

If Apple came out with alternatives to Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and After Effects I would make the switch today. I've already moved away from InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere (Windows, what could I use), and Flash.

Apple already does this; Aperture directly competes with Lightroom.

As a person who has used both extensively, let me tell you: Adobe knows a whole lot more than Apple in this area.

wow there really stupid they have no case. first off its apples platform and they can do whatever they please. second i bet any amount of money its in the developer agreement that they have to comply to something for the use of certain language of code defined by apple (or something like that) so the case that there not allowing the devs to put it in there apps is gone. i want to see the case they cum up with, i personaly would bet money that adobe would loose but since im not the betting type i wont but, take my word they will lose if there case is one i said.

thats like me trying to sue Obama because I want the 142,000 dollars I have to pay off thourgh my taxes, and because he spent it without my permission. ;)

Wait that has nothing to do with this, Its like a fish suing because it swallowed the worm and was hurt.

Its like driving your wifes car into the middle of the street than renting a steamroller and running over it and blaming the car dealership you bought the car from. ( Unless it was a toyota, then you have the right too:rolleyes:)

Its like tossing the baseball up in the air and trying to catch it with your teeth.

Thats like punching your monitor and blaming dell for not making stronger monitors.

Its like buying a kindle and trying to play need for speed from the Apple App store on it. :p

Its like buying a netbook. :D

Adobe what the hell are you trying to accomplish. It makes no sense.

Notice: How all these make no sense, its like Adobe.

If adobe could make a nice flash plug-in than all abord. But when both my mac's, pc's, phones everything freezes up because of flash. **** YOU ADOBE!

I am all for this, and would totally support Adobe.

It was crappy on my phone but I got over it and got used to it....

Now I bought and iPad assuming I didnt really care about Flash but I sure as hell do! Its incorporated into so many websites, I couldnt even use my iPad to look at different cars the other night....not even being sarcastic - I could not go to even ONE car website that I wanted to go to. That's absolutely ridiculous. Apple brings out this great new device where you "have the web in your hands"...but its so limited and annoying...I've actually been using my laptop more often. Not because I want to, but because I am FORCED to because of this crap with flash. Just allow it. If the USER wants to enable it then let them enable it and give whatever warnings you want to give. I'd be curious to see the percentage of iPhone and iPad users that choose to disable Flash as if its more beneficial.

This really didnt bother me up until getting the iPad. I'm sort of furious about how limited my web browsing is due to this ridiculous banning of Flash....and they have never actually said why. They just ignore it....just like they're ignoring the billions of flash sites that don't work. I can't take it....why shouldnt I be able to look at the various car manufacturer websites on my iPad?

The most logical explanation I have heard is that Apple thinks people would find content streaming for free on the web (hulu, myspace, etc) and deter them from buying audio/video through iTunes therefore decided that allowing Flash would hurt them financially....thus banning it. That makes sense as a reason for it...but that's AWFUL to do to users.

I was hoping that maybe it was in the works but then heard that news about CS5 and now this...just enable flash Apple!!! This is absolutely ridiculous!

Guess its not too late to take your iPad back, because Flash on the iPad isn't going to happen.

Ever.

Hurry though, you are running out of time.

BTW, Netflix was showcased by Steve Jobs. I'm pretty sure that Netflix is competiton for the iTunes Store. YouTube is already experimenting with HTML5 and Hulu is almost certainly working on a non Flash version.

lol at Adobe. I use their programs since I am a graphic designer, but I don't really have much else to chose from, and there are many times I would like to. Maybe this will open the door for another small company to put there foot in said door and make some competing software that Apple will endorse.

As a side note maybe I can send adobe my MBP and have them watch a youtube video on it when it's on their lap and see how they like the heat!

This. However this suit will change nothing.

the details

The only reason that the M/IE issue was brought to court (and it was not universally accepted) was that you can argue that Windows does have a monopoly on PC operating systems.
I'm not saying they do or don't, but if you get hired at Giant-Co, and you get a a Dell to use, you don't have a choice on what to run. The IT staff, arguably, doesn't have a choice. The Biz Dev unit doesn't have a choice (as they need to tie into the accounting dept and to legal) ETC.
As Microsoft proudly proclaims they control X amount of the PC computing space. You start to enter in various degrees of antitrust arguments. Apple still has less than 6% of the PC computing space. And in corporate it's much higher.
Hell, if Microsoft can be sued for integrating and/or bundling Internet Explorer into Windows, why the heck not?
