I wish Apple had reverted to be a privately held company at least ten years ago. Then, there would be less pressure for them to maximize profits by introducing annoyances like ads on Apple Maps. If Apple were a privately held company, then their employees could focus more on customers instead of stockholders. Alas, for me, and I suspect for many others, the advent of ads on Apple Maps is another reason to take my business elsewhere.

Switched to Apple Maps to avoid Google Maps ads and data tracking.

If I’m getting ads, I’m using the better map service — that’s Google Maps, no question and no doubt. Will be deleting Apple Maps when the ads come up. Feels tacky as hell for a “premium” brand.

I'll do ya one better

Wait until a bunch of kids are run over getting off a school bus because the driver was distracted by an ad, all so Tim Cook and co. can have another .10 in their pockets.

Capitalism is BS. The drive for never ending revenue growth is the end of civilization.

God hope this is not the start of the Androidification of iOS. Android phones (Especially the cheaper ones), have ads everywhere including notifications, settings menu etc.

Go to Apple Maps, search for “Food”.
Examine the results.
In the future, it’ll be just like that, but the top result will have a tiny “AD” logo.
... except that the "ad" will be for a place ten minutes off of your route, instead of two minutes. And I'm not speculating; the only reason that Apple feels they can get away with this is that literally every other mapping app does it, too... so everybody already knows precisely what to expect.

But the question some have brought up as to which app is better, is really a matter of which one has the most recent aerial imagery of your region. Right now, none of the mapping apps actually show my house, which was just built in October of last year -- but at least Apple maps routes people to the right location. Waze and Google both insist that the address doesn't exist at all, and attempt to route people to the linear center of the road I live on. Not even the closest known address, numerically... the center of the damned road. Which is about a half-mile away from me.

I always have to tell people to favor Apple Maps to find my house, if at all possible. You're an Android user? Well, ya better put in my neighbor's address... at least that'll get you close enough.

So ads notwithstanding, I guess I'll stick with Apple. I suppose Apple's ads won't actually be any worse than Google's or Waze's ads.

You should just give them the GPS coordinates.

I’m all for ads if they don’t get in the way of using the app. Like POI but pop up in the way garbage I don’t want to see. I still prefer Waze 98% of the time. I even tried using built in navigation on my 2023 VW Arteon and 2024 Audi A7 it was absolutely terrible, reinforced my theory that any car that does not support CarPlay is a no go for me.
Let me understand this.. you're all for ads... as long as they don't get in the way. You pay a premium for the device, you pay a premium for the cloud service and you're OK with being served ads after paying those premiums?!? Like WTF are you smoking? Apple already has too much money and now they are going to make even more money shoving ads down your throat while increasing prices for hardware and software. The double/triple dipping here is absolutely ****ing insane. Even worse, people are OK with this ****.

So... both Steve and Tim are hypocrites then?

Remember the open letter written by Tim Cook back in 2014 (now removed by Apple)?

"A few years ago, users of Internet services began to realize that when an online service is free, you’re not the customer. You’re the product. But at Apple, we believe a great customer experience shouldn’t come at the expense of your privacy."

Apple Maps got better but it took a long while. Apple Maps is still a little off in its directions but so is GMaps.
GMaps is relatively better and it borrowed some features/functionality from Waze, whom it bought out. Yet Waze still exists for whatever reasons.
Sometimes Waze is more accurate than those 2. 😄
Both GMaps & Waze have ads. You get used to it eventually.

So we are just going to pretend that Google Maps doesn’t have promoted Pins? They ARE an Ad Company, and have been for a very long time.

Those appearing to clutch your pearls are hilariously hypocritical. And let’s get over the narrative the Google Maps is somehow superior when it’s not. Core turn by turn is generally indistinguishable, as it routing and voice guidance, has better privacy support processing navigation on device, and has a cleaner interface (thought one is subjective). The only thing Google has above Apple is some more rural coverage (but that’s changing more every day), and the POI data, due to it’s massive head start and ties to Search.

If apple matching google in incorporating ads into maps is the “final straw” for you, then I can’t really trust your opinion — most specifically it it makes you go back to Google.

Calm down there fella it’s called an opinion.

Yeah of ads such as points of interest on a map sure is what I said. Have you ever bought tv and commercials play on it? it’s not some completely unheard of idea.

Oh noooo I did not know this. Google kills everything ( buying competitors and killing them) now I’m sad.

Is apple out of money? Why so much greed?
This brings Apple money but it also offers other businesses ways to reach potential/new customers. In other words, it's not only about Apple. Other businesses like the option to run ads and it’s a strong possibility that the reason there are ads is because other companies petitioned Apple to add them.

There are also people who like ads. I'm not one of them, but I personally know people who appreciate getting ads. This is especially true if they are relevant to their needs or interests at the time. I don't understand liking ads (although, there are some TV ones that have been well done), but I like the people all the same despite them not minding and even liking ads.
