Apple could probably write a better version of 1Password overnight if they felt like it - it's not exactly complex software, why on earth would they pay to acquire it.

Used to until they got greedy with the subscription BS. Switched to EnPass and it's basically the same and no subscriptions.
They offer standalone version too. Like when companies offer the standalone version along with sub ones.

If Apple acquired them and offered free service to those who own both a Mac and iPhone and a discount for iPhone only users, this would provide even more of an incentive for people to switch over.

1Password likes to use the Apple beach ball a lot... so perhaps a merger is already happennIng

Saw this posted on the 1Password Twitter feed. Anyone looking for a good deal on license might want to consider the following.

"Hey there! If membership isn't your thing, you can pick up new licenses for 1Password for Mac and Windows at $49.99 right now, around 23% off of the standard $64.99 pricing. 1Password for iOS doesn't require a license purchase, although 1Password Pro is optional for $10

Subscription fees for passwords is like paying for bottled tap water.

Love 1password
I dislike how 1Password have treated its users, very Apple like with little information on its Windows release schedule (I know its out now)

It left users for several years with an outdated windows product, removed drop box syncing from its replacement.
Spun on its website when users asked for an update. Threw out its old product and rewrote it from scratch which took about 2-3 years instead of dual development which would have been wise - you don't leave yourself without a product offering for several years.

It then pushed the subscription model instead of releasing an updated project and want to charge a lot (comparatively speaking to other subscriptions) instead of updating its standalone products - reminds me of the whole Adobe debacle.

I hope this augurs in greater 1P integration with every app. Right now only apps specially coded for 1P work with it, which makes many password-using apps like banking apps annoying. If 1P was automatically integrated into login screens created through Cocoa it would be a lot more convenient. Just recompile and get 1P support.

Apple plans to deploy 1Password internally to all of its corporate and retail employees around the world over the next few months, according to BGR's editor-in-chief Jonathan Geller, who cites an unnamed source.

1password-apple.jpg

The report claims Apple plans to offer a free license to the standalone version of 1Password to each of its employees and their families:The report claims 100 Apple employees will start using 1Password through this initiative starting this week, with all corporate and retail employees at the company expected to be activated within the next one to two months.

The report also mentioned that "acquisition talks were underway," although "unlikely," and AgileBits swiftly denied that claim.

Apple employees have already received 1Password for free for several years, so it's unclear what this "deployment" refers to exactly.

1password is the worst. Not once did it not pollute my passwords. Apple's free system is great. After sending my $ 50 on 1password and being unable to use it, I cannot recommend it less. This includes several support texts with password, as they never answered the phone.

1Password is mediocre, it's only useful because it's cross platform... And it costs money.

It's far worse at form filling than keychain as well...

I can barely even begin to imagine how much better this app could become once Apple buy's it out.
I mean, look how Siri advanced so massively once Apple took control ;)

Indeed! Now every Apple device comes with it! :D

Form filling is not Keychain's job, unless you were talking of something else. Also, 1Password as a product is certainly not mediocre. It is a refined product with a security track record that would do them proud. How might you be finding the product mediocre, if you would kindly elaborate?

1 Password has changed to a money swallowing monster with high-priced "subscription" - the most longterm users I know changed to enforce activating the Apple Keychain for simple logins together (filling in Safari logins works better than 1Password) with another password manager ENPASS offering fair conditions for special password cases combined with several information and a lot of notices etc).

Maybe now we know the reason why AgileBits tried to increase the revenue so heavily over the last 2 years - I am curious Apple really will pay at this fantasy-level

On the long run my old licensed 1 Password Version 6.x (one payment, free for family license) will find its way to TRASH :D

Good for you! That is the benefit with so many options in the wild. We all get to choose what suits us. :)

Maybe it is more about acqui-hiring people from AgileBits than the solution 1password itself.

I like 1password, for me it is a better more user friendly version of iCloud Keychain with better user interface.

If they could improve Keychain Access app and add it to work automatically with other browsers on Mac OS/iOS then I would not need 1password anymore.

Name a software product acquired by a large company that HASN'T seen a big slowing in their development.

Here's a few
  • NextSTEP (bought by Apple in 1997)
  • Final Cut Pro (bought by Apple in 1998)
  • Logic Pro (bought by Apple in 2002)
  • CUPS (bought by Apple in 2007)
  • Siri (bought by Apple in 2010)
  • FoundationDB (bought by Apple in 2015)
And that's just Apple

Not to mention that most websites have security questions like “name of your high school” and other information easily obtained, or they have verbal passcodes if you need to call in. I make up fake info for all of these things and store them in 1Password, too.

Thanks for the tip; I had been wanting to do this for years but never could figure out a way of securing the fake answers.

You are correct, acquiring people and knowledge are many reasons why companies are purchased.

However, going back to your original premise: Creating a product such as 1Password isn't an overnight job. Apple couldn't do better, because we've seen the evidence in iCloud Keychain.

1Password isn't just a "populating user name and password in your browser" product, it has way more functionality.

I don't touch iCloud Keychain with a barge poll, its severely lacking.

OOOH... god forbid a product actually costs money!!! 1Password is more than just filling in a form.

1Password vs keychain - YMMV. iCloud Keychain is utterly useless for me and I avoid it.

I guess some hidden ad writers are around

Same you find in AppStore comments to this app - a lot who say money is nothing and we do love subscription o_O

best greetings to AgileBits...

iCloud lacks a lot. It’s a glorified password “manager” that are built into browsers.

please explain to me how it’s mediocre? Cross platform alone is a selling point for me since I have Windows, iOS, macOS, Android, and Linux. God forbid people actually charge for something... can iCloud Keychain handle Timebased one time passwords and auto fill them too? No. Again, useless. Can iCloud Keychain work wirh Firefox, Chrome, and other browsers? No. Again useless.

I can’t stand people who complain that something cost money, if a person doesn’t want to pay, don’t use it. iCloud Keychain is 100% useless for me as well. It doesn’t do 1/2 the stuff that 1Password does, and iCloud Keychain doesn’t work on Windows, Linux, Android and Other browsers... a huge selling point right there for me.

If I see value in something, I have no problem paying at all.
