Does anyone seriously think Apple would, if true, install an "inferior third party" product corporate-wide? There are a lot of options Apple could do without fully purchasing 1P.

Why do you call it an "inferior third party" product?

For many of us 1P is much better than iCloud Keychain, even as a standalone password/information manager. When you add on the capabilities of 1Password for Families/Businesses, there is nothing in iCloud Keychain that can come close to the capabilities.

(Could Apple have an internal password manager solution that is better than iCloud Keychain and has password sharing capabilities, possible. But, why reinvent the wheel.)

It’s hardly a resounding vote for iCloud Keychain if Apple are going to use 1Password.

I always assumed that iCloud Keychain’s development was glacially slow as it didn’t want to hurt password manager apps like 1Password. But maybe it’s been circling 1Password for a while and that’s why.

I’d be surprised if they are acquired though - they seemed a company that wanted to stay independent.

But maybe (let’s assume) the owners ending up with a few hundred million dollars and each member of staff ending up with at least a million dollars has a way of persuading you otherwise.

1Password actually works. Period. Unlike Apple's keychain, which has been plagued by issues.

I've spent hours on the phone with Apple trying to get my keychain to sync to new devices, and the only solution I was offered was to turn off keychain completely on all devices.

What does 1password do that Apple's Keychain doesn't?

AgileBits has been pretty cagy about iCloud syncing, pushing their paid service and relegating iCloud sync to the fine print. If true, this makes me feel a little better about the future of iCloud sync.

Huh...seems like a tacit admission that Apple's Safari system isn't good enough for even Apple employees? I'd love an explanation for what its shortcomings are, as it does everything I imagine a password manager should do (and more).

Let’s imagine that you are a typical average iOS/Mac user...

It’s a great ‘it just works’ product but less so if it doesn’t work and you have to try and find out where your device stores your passwords.

Also it’s not so great if you have sites (liken banking services) that have passwords, pass phrases and secret words etc. - iCloud Keychain has nowhere to store these.

REALLY hope this won’t happen.
Don’t think it will either. 1Password’s guys just updated the app and probably got in a few $ from that.
So hopefully they won’t be in big need of the $ that sell it to Apple would give at this point.
Have they got tired of it, want to do something else?
Truly hope not.
From what I got from these guys during the 7 upgrade, I highly doubt this rumor has anything to do with reality.

Love 1Password, had it since waaaay back :)

I wonder if the same people that are bemoaning Apple's rumoured acquisition of 1P, will be the same ones shouting about how great Siri Shortcuts are in iOS 12?
Workflow had no cross-platform support (Windows, Android, Chrome/Firefox on Mac) that could/would be lost in an acquisition. Workflow was/is also the kind of app that can gain most from an integration into the OS. A password manager can also get benefits from on OS integration but not quite as much as Workflow.

After seeing what they did with the Workflow acquisition I think there’s a chance of something good coming from it.

They haven't done anything with the Workflow acquisition at this point other than making it so Siri can use it. It's not as if they've added features to it.

I have been using 1Password on my Mac and iOS devices and been rather pleased with the product. I was disappointed that it moved to a subscription model. however, I bought the product so have not needed to pay for subscription. I like its similarity to a database and being able to add fields to records.

I do wish AgileBits added an inventory module since Bento is no longer being supported by Apple.
I do agree that if Apple bought it, there would be concern that support for non-Apple OS would cease.

I love 1Password but I hope Apple don't buy it as I would think in a few years time they would drop Windows or Android support or some such.

It's better to stay standalone in my opinion.
I don't use it and never have but I admire small developers and hope they don't get bought out. But.......if they did, fair play to them and glad they'd be making money.

Apple plans to deploy 1Password internally to all of its corporate and retail employees around the world over the next few months, according to BGR's editor-in-chief Jonathan Geller, who cites an unnamed source.

1password-apple.jpg

The report claims Apple plans to offer a free license to the standalone version of 1Password to each of its employees and their families:The report claims 100 Apple employees will start using 1Password through this initiative starting this week, with all corporate and retail employees at the company expected to be activated within the next one to two months.

The report also mentioned that "acquisition talks were underway," although "unlikely," and AgileBits swiftly denied that claim.

Apple employees have already received 1Password for free for several years, so it's unclear what this "deployment" refers to exactly.

Holy smokes people read the article! It's not true!

I permanently lost all trust in 1Password after I spent time entering all of my information into it, then one day everything disappeared and I was back to the welcome tutorial. Never again!

Did you reach out to support for assistance? I've seen similar problems reported in the Agile Bits forums a few times and it's never been an actual data loss issue, rather a configuration error that's usually fairly simple to resolve.

Would’ve been very nice. Have you asked them?
Bento do still work on macOS but the iOS apps is dead and gone.
Haven’t looked seriously for a replacement yet myself. Only use it small scale, but sometime I have to find something more futuresafe for my smaller databases.

If this is the case, then Lastpass is the clear winner here for multi-plat users. Head on over to LP! Have been using it day 1 since before they were acquired and it's as good as 1Password.

No. LP is absolutely inferior to 1Password. Inferior security, inferior interface, inferior customer support.

We moved from sharing an Apple ID, to each family member having their own.

I think iCloud synch fails for a family, living together. If each family member has a different Apple ID, but want to access the same pool of passwords, there is no way that iCloud synch will work, such that all the passwords are synched between the family member’s devices. I tried Dropbox and it did not synch reliably.

I don’t like paying for a subscription, but I don’t see another viable family option.

Apple regularly kils off multi-platform support for products it buys. In the case of 1Password, it would be a huge opportunity missed if Apple did.

For now, rumours are false...

I highly doubt that. They have a decent business going with their 1Password for Business tier. I don't see any reason why Apple would kill off access for a product to an enterprise market they are seeking more and more.

Good points. But I don't think that downloading an app, installing plug-ins/extensions, copying and pasting passwords, etc. is any easier than clicking the tab in Settings/Safari that says "Passwords."

I love 1Password and I pay for the cloud based service so that I can access it on any computer I use. It comes in handy pretty often and I can use the web app at work since my company won't let me install the windows app.

How does Apple keychain incorporate 2 factor app authentication support? It's well known that 2 factor sms is not nearly as secure as app authentication. Family shared passwords is still missing from keychain as well.

That and keychain is a jumbled mess. Have you ever actually tried to open the keychain app? It's a disaster.

Keychain doesn't incorporate 2FA, but iCloud does. Any time you try to sign into your Apple ID on a new device you get a notification to verify on your other trusted devices. It is totally seamless, secure, and convenient.

And the Keychain app is a mess, but it is pretty much deprecated at this point. All passwords are stored on the Mac in Safari Preferences and on iOS in Settings > Passwords & Accounts. Most people will never even need to know that because passwords are just autofilled every time.
