The issue does not happen based on a strong grip. It happens with a weak grip. The "easy way" (not only way) to spot the problem is to hold the iPad with your right hand midway down the right side. Rest your thumb near the edge on the front. Your fingers on the back about halfway to the apple logo. If you don't see it just move around a little bit with the iPad. Also try walking or wiggling it.

Note that my first iPad i could just pick it up as described above and I would see it. My replacement it happens a lot less. However the problem is still there.

The Apple Store guy said it shouldn't do that. He was also shocked all the display units did it.

Yep, I went to two Apple stores, showed them the issue, and we looked at all display units. Every one of those did the same thing, the rep and manager were shocked as they could replicate it on every one without any more force then just picking them up. So I decided to keep mine as the replacement was worse.

I'm not sure about this.

These devices are certainly a far cry form the tank like iPad 4.

If this issue becomes big news, which i'm thinking it is, with headlines soon such as:

"Has Apple finally gone too far with thin? with reports of excessive vibration, ugly pressure screen issues, etc."

Then we might see some changes.

I'm not concerned though......much.

I Noticed The Problems

I went to the Apple Storetoday, just to see the new devices. I bought my ipad Air on launch day, so I'm totally content.

I noticed the screen distortion issue with the Air 2. The thinness is nice, but not game changing. Also, the speaker vibration is noticeable.

Just another incremental update...nothing major. But what can we expect! The iPad Air 2 is a nice product, personally I think the Air 1 is more robust. But still, change is good...I guess!:apple:

There's no distortion for me when I hold it with one hand. I have to apply medium force on the back to achieve this effect. Not that big of a deal.

Nice, you have a good one. They all do it, but I agree, some are a bit better then others.

I can reproduce it if i press harder than normal on the back but not during normal use. BUT, I do not have mine in a case yet.

I'm guessing there isn't/won't be a fix for this. Not in this exact model anyway. It's due to the thinness. I mentioned in another thread about the battery shrinkage that I'm not a fan of Apple continually trying to decrease the thinness with every new generation. Another strike against thinning it out.

Here's what we get with Apple shaving off a millimeter in this version...

1)lost the mute/rotate button
2)Smaller battery. I have personally seen a larger discharge rate. My ipad air 2 is down to 65% this evening when in my Air it would be around 75% at least with similar usage. Several reviews I've read also state battery time is less.
3)Now this screen issue. Don't see how it cant be due to the decreased thickness. These screen distortions are classic signs of an lcd screen being stressed.

The ipad Air thickness was fine. I do love this Air 2 and wont be returning it. But Apple needs to rethink trying to get these ipads thinner and thinner. Next casualty wil lbe the standard headphone jack.

Keyword here is "harder than normal" seems people want this to become an issue so they can rationalize that this iPad "sucks" and can skip it. Normal use of an iPad or a tablet does NOT require hard pressing Down on the screen

This issue has nothing to do with pressing ON the screen, just fyi. Thanks for paying attention though. Very helpful. Your Next post will be you can't recreate it on yours, thanks.

Oh so pressing on the back of my iPad is normal conditions ? Maybe throwing my iPad as a frisbee to a dog is normal to ? How about dropping it from the Empire State Building? How about taking a shotgun and shooting at it ?

Any tablet can do it .... My Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 can do it if I press really hard on the back. It sure isn't normal use though

I am using g this tablet like any other and have zero issue with it

Picking up the iPad does it, not pressing on the back. Holding the iPad in the middle does it. Trust me, I wish it didn't, I am keeping mine after going to 2 Apple Stores and every display unit does the same thing, replicated by me, and the manager of the stores. Maybe yours doesn't, wish I had yours, but will keep mine and hold it in a different spot to not worsen the problem.

I have used 2 different iPads and neither has this "issue" .... The 128gb in gold wifi and 128gb in gold cellular. This is exactly like "bendgate" ...while sure it happened but not as a big of a deal people want it to be nor as small as Apple made it look like ...

Okay, so because its not an issue for you, it doesn't exist? I do agree with you that "bendgate" is ********. For me the difference is this, I took mine back to the Apple Store, and every display model did the same thing, no pressure, no force, just hold or pick up. The manager was shocked, took my info, said Apple would contact me, tried to give me a new one, but it was worse, so I kept mine. Went to another store, same thing, every display unit did the same thing.

So for me, that's the difference, not something that people are accidentally doing, its one every iPad that I have seen, small sample but probably significant. As I said, I am keeping mine, since every other one I have seen does it, and some are way worse. I will be happy, just learn to hold it in a different position, but it is an issue.

128GB SG Cellular FYI

Yet the 2 I used Does not do this ? I don't put much stock in store models at all ever

You're totally off base. As I said MANY times just the weight of the ipad pressing on your fingers while holding it with 1 hand can cause the effect. You do NOT have to press at all.

I did not start this thread to knock down the ipad. I own 4 ipads and bought 2 ipad air 2s. I also NEVER had any other issue with this or any other of my ipads.

Again its not US pressing on the back of the ipad. Its the weight of the ipad pressing into our fingers while holding it. The employee at the Apple store saw the effect on my ipad and ALL the display units just by picking it up with 1 hand.

Pressing on the back is NOT needed for the effect. Of course you can also get the effect if you press.

Dude you're just wrong. Again this IS a real issue. I don't believe the entire bendgate crap. I also never complain or return any of my Apple products.

I have had 3 ipads and all 3 do it. 1 did it more than the other 2. The Apple employee was shocked. And again ALL the display units do it.

If you don't have the issue then you're VERY lucky.

PS. I still have my 128gb ipad air 2. I love it. I will learn to live with this SMALL problem.

I wonder if this is just a flaw in the manufacturing process that Apple can fix?

When the iPad 2 first came out, most of them, including mine, had a problem where the backlight bled around the sides of the screen. I swapped a few times and the problem was always there to one degree or another.

A few months later the microphone on my iPad 2 died, so Apple swapped it again. The screen on that one was flawless and from what I've read that problem hasn't been an issue with any iPad 2 manufactured since the original batch.

Considering people are seeing this to different degrees, there are probably things Apple can do to tweak the manufacturing process to make this less likely to happen. I'd expect the problem to be a lot harder to reproduce in a month or two.

I hope Apple takes notes of the issue. But if people keep attacking people that claim there is an issue then how can we expect Apple to ever fix ANY issue.

I hope Apple notices this problem so maybe they could offer a simple fix. What would the harm in that be?

And only if people let Apple know. Anyone with this problem needs to report it to Apple regardless of if you plan to keep your iPad or not. Just let Apple know. Don't contact CNN just Apple. lol

Really?

Gosh, I don't have mine with me. I've seen this before with tablets. It shows up
with cheaper tablets made of plastic.

I mean, I had a Samsung tablet who's screen was literally falling off, and the all did it. People were taping them on :D

Maybe Apple blew it?

If I see this ONCE with normal use it goes back and i'm certainly not going to buy another one.

What garbage.

note: then again, if the lte ones aren't doing it, that's an option I suppose.
I've had 2 LTE ones and both do it.

Air 2 Screen distoring when holding.

.....and it starts again....people trying to find "gates" with apple products.

nobody cared about bending phones, but now it's an issue apparently and considered "normal usage" to sit on your phone until it bends....Apples fault say those who think Apple should design phones to withstand this.

Now comes the pressinggate on the iPad. "Oh look it's thinner than before let's try find a problem with it"....and as bending an iPad or putting it in the back pocket would be plain stupid then let's press really hard on the back and see if it shows on the screen....

Tired of this....

I'm curious since I can't replicate it at all even by applying pressure in every way, do you need to be on an all white page or black page to see it? I am naked though, need to get a case asap so that way I can see how it does on one. If it starts doing it with a case then it'll go back. Now I'm talking normal use holding it with one hand, that's unacceptable. I feel for those that are just holding it and seeing this even a fanboy can't defend that that's awful.

Maybe it's only me but I feel that the Air 1 has better feel and build quality somehow. I hold Air 3 for quite some time then I hold the Air 1. Feels thicker but more solid. Ipad 4 feels even more solid but uncomfortably heavy
