Airbnb Working With Jony Ive's 'LoveFrom' Company

I can hear Ive's VoiceOver " No doors, no handles...nothing but soothing lines throughout the home. Its elegance is in its simplicity . The lights come one when we feel its the right mood...no switches in the house. Noting to detract from the essence of the soul of the home"

No. No we do not. Nobody does.

Ive had some great ideas...too many were just form over function.

I’m not sure what product they would be working with Ive on. Unless they plan on creating their own branded rentals? I’m seeing buildings going up in different cities that sound like they are tailored for Airbnb — maybe they want to create their own and have more control over the experience?

If you’ve ever used their service, you probably know it’s a mixed bag. I haven’t used the service in a long time because the uncertainty outweighs the potential advantages (which are becoming less).

No offense, Sir Ive, but after the butterfly keyboard and cyclinder Mac Pro: Good. Riddance.

He might have design chops as far as sketching and CAD but zero understanding of the tools he was designing and the people who use them. It’s clear that Apple needs someone with a sense of design and computer science nerdery: Jobs.

i wish airbnb's attitude towards both customers and hosts was more like apple's. airbnb are complete ******s. as soon there is a decent competitor they will be gone before you can say ive.

And in recent years some of his obsessions (the cylindrical Mac Pro, the solid-gold Apple Watch) were hindrances more than they were assets.
I love my 2013 MP.

Ive’s hardware designs were fine, it was when he got involved in the software UIs that things went downhill...

You nailed it. When Steve Jobs was running the show he seemed to be able to get great design work from Ive while reigning in his worst impulses in putting form over function. You do want great looking devices but you don’t want to go so far as to make upgrading or repairing your device all but impossible.

Once Steve was no longer in charge and Ive was left to his own devices his worst impulses got a hold of him and we got laptops and desktops that were basically un-upgradable, un-repairable throw away items. You can get away with that in a smart phone or tables that costs hundreds but when you start talking about laptops and desktops that cost thousand(s) that your customers expect to own for 4 to 5+ years the whole form over function design philosophy becomes a complete and total joke.

Yes, he was instrumental in Apples revival in the 90s and 2000s but around the mid 2010s and after, his obsessive design philosophies became more of a hindrance and traded performance for aesthetics.

let’s see...
-trash can Mac Pro
-sealed iMacs with tapered edges...who cares how thin the sides of a desktop all in one are?
-butterfly keyboards
-thermally contained MacBook Pros. Latest models are slightly thicker for better thermals
-ever thinner iPhones at the expense of battery life. Remember iPhone 6 bend gate?

I bet he was the primary reason iOS never had Home Screen widgets until now because he wanted to preserve the simple design.

What design does Airbnb really need to improve? Their app? They don’t have many brick and mortar stores, and they don’t sell physical products. Don’t know how this could be a multi-year arrangement..
