The typical euphemism of an American company.
How can you be so ‘thrilled’ and how can airbnb’s design team be one of the best in the world when no one can associate any specific design with this company. Airbnb fyi you are a service provider ...

you are making yourself sound ridiculous. Great and iconic guy, yes absolutely but express yourself perhaps in a tone closer to reality.

AirBnb contributes quite a bit to open source. The design of that work is fantastic, well thought out, and even takes accessibility into consideration. They have almost 200 repos on their GitHub.

As a developer, I can associate design specific to the company. Maybe Ive will help push that work further?

A lot of people here think that they’re a better designer than Jonny Ive. I bet you wish you were designing for Apple.

in peak Jonny Ive, he came out with a radical design that changed the industry across his entire career. You should give respect.

iPod, iMac, unibody macbook design which sets the industry standard for laptops, Macbook Air, 12” superthin macbook, iphone, airpods and the rest goes on.

I think the reason of Ive’s exit was the tech industry is matured enough, you can’t get any simpler than a slab of glass and stainless steel.

People are quick to forget what Ive did for Apple and the amazing designs he produced. Admittedly at the latter stages things went a bit off the rails but let's not forget what he did for many years along with Steve Jobs.
The days of Ive and Jobs collaborating on unique designs were spectacular, needless to say. Some of the "creations" were and still are indeed works of art and function. That makes getting rid of far outdated Apple products a difficult challenge for those who marvel at the skill of design and function over the likes of Dell, HP, Acer, et. al. Using an older Apple device was always fun, even if we never wanted to admit it to anyone else but ourselves. But, the friction between Ive and Tim Cook boiled over to a point where Ive, rightly so, moved on. No, he will never be involved with anything Apple in the years to come. But that is OK too. He certainly left in indelible mark on Apple products that live on even today. The future of Apple design and function is still unknown, they still seem to rely upon tested forms of the recent past. In time, hopefully Apple once again will become inventive enough to separate themselves from the other **** on the SHELVES. I wish Jony Ive the absolute that life has to offer all creative minds with the courage to "change the world".

This is exactly what people were saying before the iPhone came around. Just wanted to point that out.

Even though I was far from a fan of Ive’s supposed later work at Apple, I think this quote from John Arlidge’s Wired article is relevant here.

If times changed, if Apple could no longer make stuff that shreds, not pushes, the envelope, what would he do, I asked. Would he give up? “Yes. I’d stop,” he replied without hesitation. “I’d make things for myself, for my friends instead. The bar needs to be high.”

The interface of the iPhone is revolutionary. Not a new idea but revolutionary in its execution. It has changed computing. But any development of this technology will be iterative from here on out; it already is.

What’s next? Glasses? I can’t see it panning out; another Apple Watch-like accessory. Brain interface? Maybe but who knows when that’ll happen. Why do you think Samsung and the like are producing phones that fold? Novelty. There’s only so much you can do with a rectangle in your pocket.

Hence, services.

Several people mention the butterfly keyboard here... what does a designer have to to with an engineering fail?

We can’t know for sure if the keyboard was a solution to make possible a thinner design, but it sounds like something Ive would demand.

thinner beds? so you can tack more people into an Airbnb?
thinner mattresses with less travel which are uncomfortable, just because it looks cooler.

hand soap, bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion replaced with an all-in-one.

If Ive was the deity you all make him out to be, then explain why, after Jobs passed, his designs got worse and worse.

Butterfly keyboards that were the laughingstock of the industry, headphone jack/ports removal from multiple products, making iOS/MacOS a cluster**** of a mess, making products so thin their thermal-designs need to be underclocked/underspec'd, Trash Can Mac, Apple Pencil charging.

Need I go on?

I can confidently say that I could give two ***** about Jony Ive or what he’s doing these days. When he was with Apple he was just a voice narrator on the iPhone. He never got on stage, live.

He did present live once for the MacBook Pro 2008 redesign.

I actually liked the first gen Apple Pencil charging method. Yes, it looks odd, but it's pretty clever in that I don't need another cable or adaptor, meaning my pencil will always stay charged when I need it to (ie: when I am using it with my iPad).

And what's wrong with removing ports from laptops? The whole point of usb-c on PCs is that it's the ideal port to go all-in on, and what better way to walk the talk than for the MBP to drop every other port it has for USB-C? Apple even did away with MagSafe. How's that for consistency?

As for thermal designs, it also seems that Apple was designing their laptops around certain promised intel chip designs that never materialised. That's why Apple is now going ahead with their own processors - so they can continue to deliver superior performance in a thin and light package without thermal throttling problems.

Seems like the 2016 MBP was simply ahead of its time here.

The lack of respect for Jony on here is a shame.

Yeah he had a couple of duds in his time (he’s only human) but he had WAY more hits and Apples success is as much his input as Jobs. He changed design forever and it seems everywhere i look now other companies are copying apple and their design philosophy.

I mean the negative comments are probably being written on a product designed by him.

A door-key-on-phone system has to be a no-brainer for AirBnB . Of course these systems exist already but AirBnB could cross sell a purpose built system to their big client base many of whom are probably a bit older and will need some nudging to make this kind of investment. Also camera at front door.

Can't believe people are still going on about headphone jacks!
