Yes, he was instrumental in Apples revival in the 90s and 2000s but around the mid 2010s and after, his obsessive design philosophies became more of a hindrance and traded performance for aesthetics.

let’s see...
-trash can Mac Pro
-sealed iMacs with tapered edges...who cares how thin the sides of a desktop all in one are?
-butterfly keyboards
-thermally contained MacBook Pros. Latest models are slightly thicker for better thermals
-ever thinner iPhones at the expense of battery life. Remember iPhone 6 bend gate?

I bet he was the primary reason iOS never had Home Screen widgets until now because he wanted to preserve the simple design.

And more...

e.g.
- senseless, unergonomic TouchBar, combined with loss of ESC and bad position of cursor keys
- thin iPad with bending
- notch
- loss of MagSafe
- loss of USB-A and thunderbolt 1 and 2 sockets
- loss of audio jack in iPhones (no simultaneous charging anymore possible)
- too huge TrackPad in Mac Books (unergonomic for reaching keys)
- bad position of loudspeakers aside of iPads (you always need to keep your palm there for better sound reflection
- not reparable iMac, Mac Pro (trash can), Mac Books, iPad (cannot change battery) ...
- second glass front to make breaking more easy
- his "marvelous design work" was hidden under ugly cases for daily use – he was just interested how iPhones look in museums around the world

I would have fired him some years earlier!

I actually liked the first gen Apple Pencil charging method. Yes, it looks odd, but it's pretty clever in that I don't need another cable or adaptor, meaning my pencil will always stay charged when I need it to (ie: when I am using it with my iPad).

And what's wrong with removing ports from laptops? The whole point of usb-c on PCs is that it's the ideal port to go all-in on, and what better way to walk the talk than for the MBP to drop every other port it has for USB-C? Apple even did away with MagSafe. How's that for consistency?

As for thermal designs, it also seems that Apple was designing their laptops around certain promised intel chip designs that never materialised. That's why Apple is now going ahead with their own processors - so they can continue to deliver superior performance in a thin and light package without thermal throttling problems.

Seems like the 2016 MBP was simply ahead of its time here.
Sometimes being too ahead of your time is not a good thing.

Yes, the future might be all usb-c, but it’s not even the present. Removing every non usb-c i/o except for the audio jack resulted in a more elegant design, by far, but also in a less usable product. Also, all that elegance disappears once you start connecting docks and adaptors.

Maybe one day usb-c connectivity will be the norm and not the exception, but by then I doubt 2016 mbps will be considered fast machines. If the keyboard still works, that is.

There’s some snark, yea. But mostly what I see are comments that accurately critique him, and remind me why he should have been booted from apple well before he actually was.

Hardly accurate. It's just a load of juvenile high school snark from people not able to muster up any sort of mature and reasoned analysis.

Bottom line... Without Ive, Apple would not have enjoyed the massive success it has enjoyed over the last two decades. With many millions of repeat customers opening their wallets to purchase premium priced and coveted products, year after year after year.

If Ive was the deity you all make him out to be, then explain why, after Jobs passed, his designs got worse and worse.

Butterfly keyboards that were the laughingstock of the industry, headphone jack/ports removal from multiple products, making iOS/MacOS a cluster**** of a mess, making products so thin their thermal-designs need to be underclocked/underspec'd, Trash Can Mac, Apple Pencil charging.

Need I go on?
Not to mention the charging of the cordless mouse

I came here for the sarcastic posts.

Was not disappointed!

Usually I would agree with you, though now I think YOUR post is the sarcastic one... I mean.. what design product is there at AirBNB? I don't get this combination at all.

Nope, I corrected you, "Without Ive and a focused Jobs, ...". Ive and Cook was a complete disaster. Ive & Jobs when his health was deteriorating was less than stellar.

Just like Jackson/Jordan made Pippen and Rodman superstars, Jobs made Ive. Without him, he has not and will probably not do much except live off of his Apple fame.

Apple's longtime head of design Jony Ive left the company back in mid-2019 to start his own company called LoveFrom, and one of Ive's first clients is Airbnb.

jony_ive.jpg

Airbnb today announced that it is working with Ive's LoveFrom company on a "special collaboration" that will include a multi-year relationship to "design the next generation of Airbnb products and services."Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky says that he has long admired Ive's work, and that he and Ive have been friends for "many years," sharing a belief in the "value and importance of creativity and design."

When Jony Ive left Apple, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the Cupertino company would continue to work with Ive's LoveFrom, with Apple serving as one of LoveFrom's "primary clients." At the time, Ive said that he was looking forward to working with Apple "for many years to come" and remaining "very involved."

Ive's company, LoveFrom, was created in partnership with Marc Newson, who Ive has worked with for many years. LoveFrom is a collective of designers, architects, engineers, artists, writers, and musicians.

When Ive left, his design duties were taken over by Evans Hankey and Alan Dye, who head up Industrial Design and Human Interface Design, respectively. Both report to Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer.

Both things can be true about Ive. What you say is true. But there are some amusing aspects where he took some ideas a bit too far without Steve Jobs around to “edit” that it’s okay to poke a bit of fun at. Some attitudes do border on or veer directly into hatred and contempt, though. And I just can’t see why, when his designs, despite their faults, are the most imitated and poorly so.

I feel guilty kicking a man when he is down, but thank God Ive was finally shown the door. His obsession with form over function has made all of our lives more difficult. I'm sure I'm not the only person who misses ports, MagSafe, and upgradeability.

I thought AirBNB was for renting out your room to random people? What is there to design about that?

As I remember Ive was key in the the design of iPhone 4 ... and iPhone 5 ... I guess I’ve is back on iPhone 12 ... at least in spirit. I doubt that the move made in iPhone 6 was down to Ive wishes only ... it did never really looked like an Ive design. Oh, and guess what, Apple Watch / Ive design did not change that much did it? So people can suck in the their own negativity with the Gold story ...

And what about the Magic Mouse 2 where you need put it in an unusable upside down position to charge it? I mean you really need to be mentally challenge to see that as ingenious design.

Man this is a face I wish I never got to see you again could you imagine how much further along we would’ve been had this guy not been in charge for so long At Apple I feel sorry for Airbnb it’ll end up being AirBnB gate The only thing I liked about this guy was his voice button that is designs weren’t that great most of them he got from what was left from Steve Jobs. RIP

Actually I was serious! I needed a laugh and I was glad for the snark on the thread.

They said they were wanting help with products - not sure what those are either. Some type of hardware? Maybe we are mistaking the work Ive does, its not purely industrial design anymore, it's more holistic.

When a good thing works, how much change is needed?
According to the big B-schools, if you're not constantly re-inventing things, you're susceptible to becoming obsolete. So you must keep changing. If everything looks good, keep making it less good and pocket some money.

That rule is not universal. Distinguishing when and how to appply that rule takes real talent. It’s possible to mess up the secret sauce. New Coke.
