I honestly don’t see Apple and Ive collaborating on anything ever again. That original statement was an amicable-divorce press release. He seems to be more interested in spaces and experiences rather than pure industrial design anymore. And in recent years some of his obsessions (the cylindrical Mac Pro, the solid-gold Apple Watch) were hindrances more than they were assets. But for a long time, the work they did together was legendary.
Quoted, because I agree but moreso because you absolutely nailed it. 👏👏
Ive was the right guy, the right temperament, the right perspective, the right age, the right focus, the right
everything at precisely the right time.
As remarkable a run as he had with Apple, at some point, even someone as decorated as Ive is going to want to unravel different types of riddles than the ones he (and Steve) practically mastered while at Apple. There’s only so many times and ways one can help completely redefine the same markets (though his influence reached so far beyond just computers & tech. His fingerprint was the dominate aesthetic over the course of a solid two decades - a truth which still staggers) before they need a change. Need something different. Him moving toward spaces/experiences is a classic trajectory for humans, especially artists. He tried to keep that trajectory intact at Apple when he tackled OS design. But it was only delaying the inevitable desire to move from physical objects to emotive spaces. Looking at his professional arch, he was always been headed toward experiential: from industrial (physical) to OS (spacial), you can see how his taste and thinking evolved/lightened over the years. It’s not uncommon for a younger creative/human to present bold, loud, disruptive ideas. It takes a seasoned journeyman/woman/person to understand it’s the notes you don’t play that matter most. That bold expressionism that winds its way to a more subtle minimalism is also a pretty classic evolutionary arch.
I‘m interested to see how the next wave of creatives navigate both the legacy and future of Apple’s aesthetic. Who is going to be the next Ive? The next renegade that’ll ruffle feathers, pull Apple into a completely new visual language that’ll make us all grumpy and long for the old days of aluminium and camera bumps? When Apple took personal computers from boring beige boxes to colorful gum drops, things forever changed - whether the fan base of the time approved or not. Thank goodness. Looking forward to seeing how this evolves. One thing’s certain: it’ll be entertaining.
