Have they changed the WWDC iOS 11 announcement video where Airplay 2 was specifically mentioned as a feature, in iOS 11?
/s

I'm not saying they changed it. I'm saying that it *never was there* in the first place. People just assumed AirPlay 2 was gonna be part of iOS 11.3 (myself included), but now that I think about it, Apple never said anything to that effect.

Hopefully it will arrive at WWDC. They are in need of a solid and legit sales incentive short of a price drop (never happen) to move the lagging HP sales beyond the Apple Fanboy base. Keeping my fingers crossed.

What’s very odd is that Sonos can produce two speakers that work together in stereo with excellent results and without anything like the resources that Apple have. The HomePod is an excellent speaker, but it does need the function of two working together, stereo or whatever Apple like’s to call it.

I've also hard wired the Apple TV to the network and experienced lag. After disabling Bluetooth, everything was working fine and the lag was gone. Seems like Apple is preferring bluetooth connections for AirPlay, which I completely don't understand. AirPlay should always use the local network when it's available.
I had a similar issue. Last time I plugged my AppleTV to Ethernet, I couldnot use my iPhone as a remote controller anymore. Seems like plugging Ethernet disabled the Wifi

Interesting. I just wired in my Apple TV 4K (refurb) and it works fine with the iPhone remote app. Perhaps, just a coincidence.

AirPlay is still garbage, period. I have had nothing but problems with AirPlay with current generation iPad Pro and last gen Apple TV 4. AirPlay starts up, and then stops, restarts, stops again, goes back to the Apple TV screen, and then kicks me back to iPad playback on my iPad. If I do this routine, maybe, 3 times, I get AirPlay solidly working.

Using Android phone and Chromecast, never had a single issue getting a stream to play on the Chromecast from my phone, it JUST works, there is no handshake dance or other shenanigans while AirPlay tries to negotiate content streaming between two devices and services made by the same ****ing company.

So yeah, Apple deserves an award for software and hardware integration "innovation", the BEST company for not understating how to actually ****ing integrate software into hardware.

That other article is a complete ****ing joke for hardware software innovation awards.

Apple invented that award to stave off the growing concern consumers have that Apple is suffering greatly on software quality.

Stop defending this company, it just makes you look like a naive idiot for ignoring all the problems this company has introduced in the last year because you simply put up or ignore all the Apple ******** because you have never actually tried a competitive platform.

The Myth of Apple seems to be far greater then the Reality of Apple. The warped reality field is strong with Apple these days.

For now I've got the HomePod in one room and I'm using Airport Express to drive a pair of comparatively cheap speakers in my bedroom. Going to AirPlay 2 won't affect the HomePod -- except to make me buy a second one for the stereo -- but the odds that Apple will update the firmware of my first generation Airport Express to make it AirPlay-2-friendly are about the same as the odds that they will send me a newer one free, so I'll need an alternate solution there, unless (as I'm hoping) AirPlay2 automatically falls back to AirPlay1 for those devices.

I don't watch television (don't even have one, to tell the truth) so the AppleTV seems like too expensive a workaround for just audio.

Good. Glad they started to realize putting out buggy software pissed everyone off.

I'm extremely disappointed in it as well. Why the hell would the audio break up when they are 5 feet away from each other? I have basically all but stopped using my ATV4.

Really hope they update Airplay to be less resource intensive. In the school district where I work, the teachers have MacBook Airs with 4 GB of RAM. If they have a bunch of stuff open (eg Safari/Chrome tabs, Pages documents, whatever), and go to Airplay, their MBA screens go to the 16:9 aspect ratio, but the thing they AirPlay to goes black. Closing/quitting everything except for what they're showing on screen, and maybe restarting, usually gets it going again. Kind of frustrating. And since we're a public school district, we don't have the money to buy new laptops with more RAM.

Weird thing, too, is that our middle schools' students are 1:1 Chromebooks. So instead of an AppleTV, we use a Chromecast and AirParrot on the teacher MBAs. From what I hear, it works a whole lot better than AirPlay.

Good chance this is now pushed to iOS 12. What a shame.
Agreed. I'd say AP2 is being swept up in the iOS 12 lockdown mantra. As the main iOS 11 feature I've been looking forward to since WDC'17 I'd still rather them get it right before releasing it. I can't take another cockup this year from my beloved.

Apple is starting to buckle under the pressure of meeting software quality objectives.

This is turning them into another company that paper-launches products or launches them with great delay that when they're finally done/released there is no excitement left for the achievement.

I agree they are buckling, but what I am unable to put my finger on is the root cause. Not enough resources\too little time? Lack of talent\bad management? Seems the answer to both those causes is no. So I am left scratching my head as to what is the root cause of this quality issue.

After years of reading posts about Airplay I have come to the conclusion that there is a issue with some Airplay WIRELESS connections. I have not read of issues with those of us fortunate enough to have connected all of our ATVs/Airport Expresses and Airport Extremes via ethernet cabling.

My experience with Air Tunes then Airplay "one" has been flawless. Someone who knows a lot more about computer hardware and software than me told me many years ago to connect devices via wire if at all possible. Not only for reliability sake but also for increased security.

My iOs devices (using the Remote app) all interface perfectly with my entire Airplay system. Maybe it is because I have an AirPort Extreme as my router and a stable strong and fairly fast internet connection and keep my modems up to date. (100 Mbps)

There are obviously issues with Airplay especially via wireless connections. It is strange how Sonos and Google can be perfect, never with any problems (according to those on this thread) and Apple's wireless airplay is a total failure.

My only concern is the rumor that Apple will no longer put resources behind the Airports. I have used those units for 11 years and again with absolutely NO negative issues.

But hey I also have a 2007 iMac that I used to replace a string of PC's that were nothing but trouble for many years with their Operating Systems (Microsoft) That iMac (albeit updated with SSD and max memory) is still my main business computer. I have a 2012 pre retina MacBook Pro that I also upgraded to SSD and max memory that serves as my mobile computer for my business when on the road. Never a negative issue with either. My iPhone 5s is OLD but after a 29 dollar battery replacement is humming like new.

I do not understand why a company that can produce such excellent products for so many years is incapable of addressing this wireless Airplay issue if it is in fact as wide spread as appears in this thread.

Yeah remember all the people claiming 10.4 was a thing and I said it wasn't? Who was right?

Yeah, because they follow the exact same software versioning every single year.

Your guesses are as wild as anybody else’s.

When you connect Ethernet, it does disable the Wi-Fi. But as long as your Wi-Fi can talk to hardline devices, it should still work. I have my living room ATV hardlined and can use my iPhone as a remote with no problem. It sounds like something with your router’s firewall blocking communication.

For several years now, I’ve used AirPlay to stream music from a Synology NAS drive to a Marantz AV7005 pre-pro via an iPad Air 2. Until recently (iOS 11) it was pretty common for the iPad to disconnect from AirPlay, most often between songs or when I put the iPad to sleep. That was a nuisance, but overall I was glad to have the feature and used it daily. As of iOS 11, the connection is very stable.

Synology’s apps can also connect to the Marantz via UPnP. That has always been a much more stable connection then AirPlay, but AirPlay is more convenient because it can stream from other apps like YouTube as well as from Safari.

I’m looking forward to AirPlay 2 so I can stream from Safari, YouTube, etc. to a pair of Sonos One speakers in the kitchen.

You can get the $29 battery replacement for the 5S? I thought this was just for the 6 or later. Or are you talking about third party?

"The AirPlay 2 feature was buggy and not fully functional, which may be why it's been removed. It is not clear at this time if Apple plans to re-introduce the AirPlay 2 functionality in later iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 betas."

I'm ok with stuff being constantly removed and put back (as i refer to Home sharing as well on iOS, so this wouldn't be the first time this removal/put back has happened), due to buggy software, but it IS beta after all.. That's the point of it anyway.

Makes little sense in a beta than a stable version because of the nature. If Apple keeps doing this practice all the time, they either, are there to upset developers, or they lost sight of what what they are really intending to archive.

Are your wifi and wired ethernet separate IP networks? Or are the addresses assigned by the same device, from the same IP address pool?

The only thing that gives me hope that this will eventually be released (and not totally dropped/abandoned) is that multiple competitors (Sonos/Google Chromecast Audio/Amazon Echo) all seem to be able to do multi-room speaker wireless sync no problem.

Ha I was taking my children's phones in (7 Plus and 7) and I pulled out my old 5s. I have purchased a lot of devices from my Apple Store over the years and I think they just did it out of kindness.

Amazing how this online retailer can play garbage music on garbage speakers in sync. The future we live in!

Yes, I wish Amazon had the same music that you can get on Apple music. They only have the 2nd string artists. /s

Plus I'm using Dots. The Dot in my office is hooked up to my Surround sound system which kills anything Apple makes, the one in the kitchen is hooked up to a small bluetooth speaker since my wife only listens to background music there. The one in my bedroom uses its own speaker because I just use it to turn on lights, my TV and to ask questions.

Imagine having options. The horror, the horror.

Why does AirPlay 2 exist? You can already stream to multiple AirPlay destinations in iTunes on Mac/Windows. Is AirPlay2 any different? Is it more efficient than AirPlay or something like that?

I don't understand why this is considered a feature when iTunes can already do this.
