Now they need a base station where you can transmit to multiple bugs at the same time.

There's already something similar. They're called Bluetooth headphones and you can get a pair for $20. That doesn't seem to be stopping those lovely folks from standing in line to pay $159.

I mean, whilst i'm not remotely interested in these as the sound quality will be no where near my acceptable standards - comparing these to current bluetooth headphones is a bit like saying "there is already an iPod, it's called an MP3 player you can get them for $20" when it first came out in 2001.

While waiting for them like crazy I can't help but wonder - Will I be able to use them during a flight?
Or I need to go back to wired earbuds?

Depends on the airline, some allow bluetooth, other don't, out of my last three airlines only one allowed bluetooth

I don't see why not, I use my PowerBeats3 on the plane without issue, and they use the same technology.

Interesting, is that a UK thing? Southwest, United, American, Delta, Alaska, Spirit have no issues with them here.

People can do what the hell they want - I really don't care that much. I just don't understand it.

Yeah, very complicated to understand! People buying something that you don't like or you may not find it very useful have been since..... like always. I never wonder why people buy things I don't like. The answer is, they do like them.

I don’t think EarPods or AirPods are any use on the plane, it’s just too loud. Ideally I’d go for noise cancelling Bose headphones (now they have a wireless model) or a cheaper option would be to use in–ears with rubber gaskets.

interesting it's the only Apple product I've had the slightest emotional "want" reaction to since the 5s came out.

I have a 6s+ now that I needed, but never really "wanted."

I have a 6+. I really wanted it, and I'm extremely happy with it.

Looking at the 7+... it looks like the same darn thing I have. I have no interest in it.

These Airpods look pretty cool, but I use my headphones so rarely, I'm not sure I can justify the price. If it was like, $50 extra when buying an iPhone to have them give me Airpods instead of the standard headphones, I'd probably go for it. But paying $170 extra to have both the standard headphones and the Airpods seems silly.

So if this product flies off the shelves, and if between this and Beats, Apple dominates the revenue and profit stream of the headphone space, is Apple then doomed? I mean think about it. Won't this be another space where a "_____ killer" can now come out? "Is this the AirPod killer?" should become common headlines in 2017. And man, at $159 there is so much room for cheaper stuff to come out with similar functionality.

I think it is pretty clear that Apple is setting themselves up for trouble with this success.

Apple needs the competition, and we need it as users.
But headphones, wow.
How about some new computers and better software?

1. People who buy these are not audiophiles. ...
Not provable.
What if an "audiophile" wanted something light to use instead of the set of expensive cans.
What if an "audiophile" didn't want a set of Bluetooth with a wire or some physical connection between the two ear pieces.

There could be any number of scenarios where the so called "audiophile" might opt to use these.

If USB-C is the future why is Apple still producing new devices with cables that connect to older USB ports? You buy their "Pro" laptop and you can't recharge either their latest iPhone or their latest wireless headphones without a dongle. Here's to the courageous ones!!!!

I called my local Apple store this AM. (Opened at 8AM Eastern time). They had NONE in stock and did not know when they may expect to get any. Also of note, none of the local Best Buys in the area list them in stock either. Looks like I may just have to wait till my Jan 30th delivery date to try these out.

I hope not. I bet that January 30 gets moved up. After Christmas is over (or maybe the holiday season through January 1) there should be less value to Apple to having some in the stores. So hopefully you get bumped up. I hope my January 12 delivery gets a bump as well. In fact, I expect it.

Just got to wonder why people who comment on sound quality and comfort didn’t go for Beats Solo Wireless 3 instead. It has the same tech (Apple W1 chip) but they are actually decent headphones for consuming content.
So you've tried AirPods and know they aren't?

Got mine this afternoon in the UK. I really like them so far, the sound is really quite good, better than the included Earpods that I received with my iPhone 7 Plus. Shame that you can't single tap to play/pause songs while two taps activate Siri but they're good anyway.

I'm impressed!

I've heard it's an option to tap to play/pause. Not sure how many taps.

I was thinking of getting these until I read some of the reviews.

They can't adjust volume? This is just silly.

Also, you have to either choose tap for Siri or tap to start/pause music. They can't do both.

Wow - people queue for headphones now? Maybe they don't know that bluetooth headphones aren't exactly a new thing.

People can do what the hell they want - I really don't care that much. I just don't understand it.

Well, yes, it is clear that you don't understand it, as fully wireless buds that use the W1 for seamless pairing and switching between devices is very new, and makes traditional bluetooth headsets with wires that don't pair easily with multiple devices just feel downright archaic.

Thanks. I was incapable of empathising with other peoples decisions but your obnoxious condescension has really opened my eyes.

I'm entitled to my point of view. That's all. If other people think they're incredible and worth the money, then that's great for them. I hope they really enjoy them. Sure they're a neat little package with the charging storage, and the auto pairing is a nice idea. I just can't fathom queueing for them. That's all.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to consider existing bluetooth headphones 'archaic' just because the automation of pairing. Especially when other 'archaic' bluetooth headphones have things like volume controls. It's classic Apple though - evolving and simplifying a piece of technology. I don't think it's the quantum leap that some people feel they are though.

I'm an early adopter, but I got a gut feeling to wait this one out. But I really want this.

The queueing is the easiest part to explain - there's been some demand built up since they were announced 3 months ago, and within an hour of going for sale online they were backordered for 4-6 weeks. Unless you want to get them in February, or maybe if you were hoping to get some as a Christmas gift for someone, you don't have much choice.
