Apple's AirPods are now available to order from the company's online store for $159.00, following weeks of speculation on exactly when the wireless headphones would launch. Originally, the AirPods were going to debut in "late October," but Apple delayed the launch for unspecified reasons.

In the official press release, Apple mentioned that the AirPods will begin arriving at Apple retail stores, Apple Authorized Resellers and select carriers beginning sometime next week. Shipment will begin in "limited quantities" at launch, and Apple encourages customers to continue checking its online store for updates on availability and shipping estimates.

Now, users can order the Bluetooth-enabled headphones, which provide up to 5 hours of music playback and high-quality sound through a "seamless and automatic connection" between the AirPods and an iPhone. To charge the AirPods, the included travel case doubles as a charging station that provides up to 24 hours of battery life for the headphones.
The new W1 chip inside the AirPods allows for seamless connection with devices in Apple's ecosystem, so that they connect instantly whenever the rechargeable battery case is flipped open near an iOS device. When in the user's ears, the AirPods "know when you are listening" and will subsequently pause music when they're taken out of an ear. Playback controls are left to Siri-enabled voice commands, which are brought up by double-tapping on the buds.

Included with the AirPods is a Lightning cable used to charge the carrying case, and the headphones require Apple devices running iOS 10, watchOS 3 or macOS Sierra. Buy your own AirPods now at Apple.com for $159.00. Deliveries are currently estimated to begin arriving on December 21 in the United States.

Update 7:16 AM: Delivery estimates in the U.S. have slipped to December 29.

Update 7:30 AM: Delivery estimates in the U.S. have now slipped to "4 weeks."

I ordered it while the shipping time was next week. Now the shipping time is slipping to 4 weeks.

Looks like hardly anyone is going to get them in time for Christmas. Way to freaking go, Apple! If they would have let us know ahead of time I would have been up early ordering! By the time I got to the site it showed Dec. 29th and when I went to check out it showed Jan. 12th. Good to know that Tim Cook, master of the supply chain, was able to get a few thousand made over the past three months. I mean honestly!

Noticed that yesterday too, when I had my Plantronics BT headset paired and it was in use. The Battery widget finally showed up yesterday (shows iphone and headset battery level), but later in the afternoon, it was gone again.

It seems the battery widget only shows when there is a BT headset paired. The headphone icon at the top I assume is showing me the headset battery level?

To me knowledge, the battery widget appears when there is another item attached or paired to the iPhone. I am aware of the Apple battery case, Apple Watch, and certain pairs of wireless headphones being supported. Oddly enough, my jabra move wireless headphones show in the widget (but aren't very accurate), while my pebble watch didn't.

Maybe the developer has to support it software-wise somehow?

Wow, glad I saw this story when I did. I got in an order with 12/21 delivery. :)

My mom and sister have been buggy me about what to get me for Xmas. Just texted my mother that they can pay me back for these headphones and I'll open them for Xmas.

surprised apple is including a lighting cable, how gracious and generous of them :p

I just thought about this, but is there Airpod specific API to iOS 10.2 that was just released the other day?

I hope it works fine on 10.1.1 because I'm wanting to stay put for hopes of a jailbreak

apple taken the money yet or put your card on hold? guessing it went through fine as money is out.

There is a good chance that despite the long delivery times, for those who missed out, if you go in early on store delivery days later this week or early next week, they might have them in stock in store - going from experience in purchasing iPhone 7, Macbooks and Apple Watches.

You have a count of who ordered before the date got pushed or you just want to complain?

You do know the dates are "estimates" and often get pushed to same day, right?

I got a Dec 21 delivery date. I really wanted the BeatsX earphones but we'll see how these feel. If I don't like them or don't stay in, back they go.
