These design abortions shall from now on be referred to as Apple's Edsel

They're certainly less noticeable than many other BT headphones on the market today. It's a tough thing to design, given the need to have the speaker unit fit in a majority of people's ears (and not fall out easily), include microphones to pick up the wearer's voice, be as small and light as possible, yet offer decent battery life.

One could argue that some of the other micro headsets that fit within the outer ear look better - because they don't stick out (and therefore are less noticeable), but they then become that much more difficult to insert and remove, which the long tube of the AirPods addresses, and the microphones of these in-ear units are more challenged with clearly picking up your voice for phone call use.

And version 2.0 being prepared for shipping in 2017.

With better reception & improved battery life.

I really want to thank you for your special attention towards Apple and their followers. You created a special account to come to macrumours, you took special time to create ****** images which no one cares, you give special time to write things about Apple and this community. I wish you keep doing the same to promote Apple and fanboys more and more. Great job

Hi. I've just purchased Apple's top of the line MBP, and I'd like to know how to charge Apple's top of the line AirPods.

Wait, what? Adapter? No, no...you misunderstand me - I have the newest MBP and the newest earphones...obviously I won't need an adap...

Nevermind.

My god, these are headphones from a company who bought one of the most prolific headphone maker in the world. How are they having issues getting these to market?

I sold my Bragi Dash the minute AirPods were announced. I figured I could live a month with my wired phones and the lightning adapter for my iPhone 7. When the release was delayed, I set up a daily monitoring of the AirPods page on the Apple Store so I wouldn't miss the release. This morning I got a ping and by the time I got there the shipping time was 6 weeks. WTF Apple, this blows. There should have been a way to sign up to find out immediately when they were released.

Why? I don't particularly like Buick automobiles. But I wouldn't get so worked up about the company that I'd want them to go bankrupt with thousands losing jobs as a result.

I'd simply choose to not consider Buick next time I'm looking for a car. Last thing I'd do is give a company, whether an automobile manufacture or tech company, the kind of power over my life to cause that kind of anger.

More importantly, would you spend your days trolling on a website for Buick enthusiasts, or just move on to a website for a car you didn't hate?

You know, that image helped me put my finger on it. The problem is that Apple didn't really redesign the EarPods. What they did was just cut the cords off. I understand why there would be an extension on them for better mic pickup, but then why not design them so they looked like they were intended to do what they're doing, rather than just EarPods with removable cables? Seriously, the EarPods don't have mics built into their "stems", so it's all well and good Apple was able to utilize the previous design feature to pull double duty, but that's not what it was originally designed for. So rather than just piggy back on the old design, how about something that mitigates the look, which might also enhance the sound? Something more tapered, perhaps, rather than just hollow tubes?

Form often follows function with Apple, but by the same token, they won't indulge a function that has poor form. Look at the faux speaker grille on the iPhone 7 -- it creates design symmetry, but certainly does not follow the function of what's located behind it. This really is no different. I can only imagine that the "series 2" AirPods, or whatever they will be called will have modifications that improve the aesthetics ...

They make a USB-C to Lightning cable.

Because traditional headphones look so cool on you. LOL. Might want to take a close look in the mirror next time you put on a pair, it's just that we've gotten used to that incredibly nerdy look of wearing cans.

I don't care how I look when I wear headphones. I am not so vein that I want to think I look cool, on the contrary I want the best sound that I can afford. Chances are guys who enjoy wearing gear like this are far more interested in audio than you are. Guess that is where you and I differ. Enjoy looking cool.

For starters -- it's too late not to buy an iPhone 7 or return it for someone who bought it because they were promised AirPods by the end of October -- about a month after the phone went on sale. In fact, I'd love to see someone return it for that reason just to see what Apple would do.

Second -- BT is not popular with many people for several major reasons:

1) it's difficult to use, mostly revolving around pairing issues
2) it suffers from reliability issues like dropouts and lag
3) they tend to be bulky, with cables linking earbuds, etc.
4) battery life tends to be limited, and unpredictable, especially on more portable models
5) they tend to be expensive
6) there tends to be a lot of low quality offerings in the low-end of the price spectrum that have turned people off
7) they offer lower quality audio than wired alternatives

In removing the headphone jack, Apple needed to offer an alternative to ameliorate the removal of the headphone jack, about which Apple was on the defensive from the moment they took the stage, and offered little legitimate support for doing. Yes Apple offered an adapter to continue using the old 3.5mm headphones -- while that mitigates the decision somewhat, it was more akin to pouring salt into the wound. Then they bundle Lightning EarPods with it, which could have been a huge positive, but the fact they can't be used with anything else -- in particular a Mac -- makes them less than an optimal replacement for the headphone jack.

So Apple made their agenda clear -- wireless is the future. Not only that, but they tell us they understand that BT is a "bag of hurt" to use a phrase Steve Jobs once applied to another popular problematic technology for Apple. In response they give us AirPods which solves 6 out of the 7 issues most people have with BT:

1) Ridiculously simplified pairing between Apple devices
2) No more dropouts or lag
3) ultra slim and compact design
4) Apple offers the longest battery life available for such a tiny device, with quick charge boosts offering 3 hours for every 15 minutes, up to 24 more hours. It also offers single pod use thus extending mono listening up to 53 more hours, without interruption.
5) For the technology offered they are somewhat reasonably priced.
6) Apple is a trusted name in quality, and has produced a product specifically designed to work with the iPhone 7

So Apple had to release this product with the removal of the headphone jack to demonstrate that wireless was indeed the future, since the existing BT market is generally not good enough to satisfy the many potential customers who have tried BT and had a bad experience and rejected it, or are confused by the offerings and limitations, or frustrated by the limitations of power, reliability, and complications of pairing. Not to mention their paucity of support for Lightning options. The AirPods are a huge step forward. The Beats offerings are likewise important -- though the only two currently available come with the added inconvenience of using micro-USB connections rather than Lightning, not to mention added bulk and expense over standard earbuds. And since Apple couldn't really address the audio quality issues and cost at this juncture, they offered an alternative via the inexpensive adapter, or Lightning (albeit limited).
I understand your frustration I do. I'm an apple aficionado and even i have been disappointed by recent events, however:

I'm surprised anyone would have bought an iPhone 7 on the proviso that said transaction was only validated upon timely receipt of a future unreleased product. Yes it was annoying they didn't ship as predicted but it's brand new tech and there have always been delays since the dawn of tech time at every company.

Re the lightening EarPods not working with the mac's jack, I never realised people expected mobile phone manufacturers to take into account every other device useage for the supplied earphones. I was under the impression they were supplying the earphones for use with their associated bought smartphone. I have never bought a computer thinking 'hmm that dastardly phone I'm about to buy had better come with headphones that work across all my devices or else. '
I'm confused by the logic behind that.

Re Bluetooth not being popular I'm unclear on that too. Please refer to my previous examples of bt headphones that work excellently and with highly attuned sound quality across all the frequency ranges. Those bt issues u refer to I can only imagine are associated with subpar cheap Amazon unbranded products or ALL other true wireless in ears. Those are not ready for prime time ala Bragi earin etc. But that should not taint the entire Bluetooth range.
Bluetooth 5 is on the horizon which will also eliminate any issues.

What part of the universal connectivity of headphones prior to Apple Headphone-gate do you not understand?

Blah blah only Apple sheep are buying them. Blah blah Apple has lost their innovation. Can't wait for the negative posts to start flooding in. Clearly there is a demand for new Apple products that is angering a very small vocal amount of people.
Or people went all FOMO and bought them despite their shortcomings.

There are already competitor wireless earbuds like these on the market and at least by Apple’s claims they beat them in battery life, range, and sound quality for about the same price or less. So this isn’t some untested new product that Apple just invented without competition, but some people’s concerns and comments on here seem to think that.

As far as losing them I’m wondering if Apple could somehow tie them into Find My iPhone or maybe a future version as long as they are within Bluetooth or wifi range.

You completely missed the point. He was mocking the look of the Airpods, and people who wore them and my post was to show that all of the head phones look "uncool" until you get used to them. So, you needn't be embarrassed by wearing the Airpods or your existing cans, but you should be a bit embarrassed about posting something that makes it seem as though you just fired off a post without reading it or have reading comprehension problems.

Oh my you are right! My cheeks are all flushed! Yeah I am not going to be embarrassed at all especially when you are firing off lame insults and making assumptions about what I might know or care about what you are thinking. Please, please keep continuing thinking you are cool and enjoying crappy sound. Won't hurt me at all.

What part of 'smartphone manufacturers are not oblidged to make sure the supplied smartphone headphones work on your computer as well, regardless of universal standard.' The MacBook and iPhone are not sold as a pair. That's like saying I'm going to buy a motorbike, but the wheels on this bike had better fit my car too because wheels are a universal standard. The fact you need a connector for the iPhone to plug into the MacBook is a different matter because you need to connect the two for data backup and syncing. The earphones are seperate to that though.

I think the AirPods look more svelte compared to the other brands of buds.

If users think the AirPods are going to fall out of their ears when they do karate moves then they can purchase an inexpensive strap.

You make a good point, seems like it would have been easy for Apple to offer a choice of cables-either USB-A or USB-C to lightning, for the same price, or drop the price by $19 and don't include a cable. Apple is encouraging a shift to USB-C, so why not continue the shift wherever possible.

Amazing, the first 5 out of 6 posts before you were negative lol. MR posters are so predictable and honestly, the mods need to start cleaning that up because it's getting very annoying.

I stopped coming here other than the few rare times because I agree with you. If the rest of society HATED Apple as much as 95% of the commenters here, the company's profits would be dropping like a stone. I'm almost convinced that most Apple users have been driven away from this site and now it's android users who have no lives or paid schills by competing companies who make a living trying to make their competition look like crap. That I am 100% convinced of.

Apple is not perfect, no, but the vitriol on this forum now is laughable. The users here seem to be completely out of touch with the real world and the maturity level sits around that of a 14 year old. It's too bad, this site used to be handy..

Anyways, I have had Jaybird Bluetooth headphones for over a year now and they are bloody amazing - both in sound and the ability to set me free. I will never ever buy another wired set of headphones ever. For people who whine and moan that this direction is a disaster? You're sadly misled by your preconceived notions. Anyways, I am curious to see how the Apple ones are compared to Jaybird.
