Waiting for them to fix the design and make the charge cable USB-C first.

Yeh I really agree with this. I like the Type C standard, the sooner everything uses it the better.

Disagree. Maybe when I can buy a USB-C cable at 7-11 at 3 in the morning, but until then USB-C is far more inconvenient than Lightning. Apple is not likely to ever switch to USB-C because they are likely to drop ports from the iPhone altogether before the need to do that, leaving iPads to eventually migrate to whatever the ultimate standard is once they actually merge with the Mac, which is still years away.

Ha ha he got served !

I'd like to see the evidence that most people use the Lightning EarBuds -- the same EarBuds that can't be used with anything but newer iOS devices.

I'd also like to see the evidence that Apple is selling the 3.5mm adapter at "close to cost".

The free adapter in the box is worth every penny, regardless, to mitigate the damage done by the removal of the headphone jack. There are likely many who aren't interested in using an adapter of any kind with their headphones, especially if they use their headphones with other devices. Of course, they have no choice if they want to use a pair of headphones with anything else, including a Mac, since their is no adapter for Lightning headphones for use with anything else, and of course the most affordable wireless headphones designed to work seamlessly with an iPhone without a headphone jack are back-ordered until February.

Option a.

There are rather a large number of alternative wireless headphone options that work excellently with the iPhone. Jabra beats solo2 etc. All of which are competitively priced.

Option b:

Don't buy the iPhone.

(Though most phones will soon follow suit)

Hey siri, change track. Hey siri, change track.
That will get old after awhile. Hey siri, turn volume up, one more, one more..

And you have the option of controlling the audio controls through your iPhone as well if you so choose.

Mine are coming on the 19th. I'm willing to sell them to any MacRumors member with guaranteed delivery before Christmas for the low low price of $2,499. I know, what a bargain.

(Just a joke, but mine are coming on the 19th and I'm super excited!)
If I were you, I sure would try to sell them, lol. Don't think interest will hold for long when other brands come out with cooler designs.

Blah blah only Apple sheep are buying them. Blah blah Apple has lost their innovation. Can't wait for the negative posts to start flooding in. Clearly there is a demand for new Apple products that is angering a very small vocal amount of people.

Amazing, the first 5 out of 6 posts before you were negative lol. MR posters are so predictable and honestly, the mods need to start cleaning that up because it's getting very annoying.

But who is?

Plus, shouldn't I be?

I've invested a lot in Apple products for the past 7+ years. I have used iPhone for all of these years. My phone plan includes 4 iPhones because my entire family uses them.

If I'm not included in the target audience, then Apple really has messed up the product.

I'm not saying AirPods are/will be a failure. They aren't for me and I fail to understand any large audience who these are for who would actually invest in them; outside of unwise customers who were "bullied" into "needing" AirPods, the press, and Apple's dedicated enthusiasts.

EDIT: Clarification: I am willing to spend money on headphones I find worth the cost. $150 can be reasonable with the right features and sound quality. AirPods don't meet my personal requirements.

When you write "I fail to understand..." you might want to pause and reflect on that. If you don't understand the appeal of these doesn't mean that others don't. And the idea that people would have to be "bullied" into buying them is very strange.

why?

you hope thousands lose their jobs? You hope that competition in the smartphone / tech / computer industry dries up? what Good would come from Apple going bankrupt?

I'm far from an Apple Fanboy. Some here probably call me a hater, But wishing bankruptcy is a long stretch that has big ramification for the entire industry.

What I hope, is that Apple has a good kick in the groin and wakes up to realize that what they've done in 2016 in particular has not been a user friendly move and they do a quick about face and fix their issues. That way they can continue to employ thousands of people world wide, provide compelling and competitive products that keep everyone (including themselves) on their toes, and we get more advancements in technology and power.

Actually, Apple employs over 80K direct employees in the US alone, and supports 1.9 million indirect jobs in the US alone. They are also the largest taxpayer in the US.

These honestly look great - my only concern is Siri doing everything. In a loud gym, I always skip tracks, change volume from my headphones (hence why Apple added hardware controls to headphones over time).

Maybe it's me, but being surrounded by a bunch of people and saying "Turn down the volume" at the gym seems awkward. Let alone if I'm running and out of breath.

I'm hoping they add support for customization so that you can program tap sequences for left and right earbuds to do things like skip/rewind tracks and raise/lower volume. Please send feedback to Apple if you agree.

For now, my AW will be a good companion for those things.

Can't wait to get mine... been waiting a long time for truly wireless earbuds that work without the annoying BT pairing issues and limitations.

Your welcome

For starters -- it's too late not to buy an iPhone 7 or return it for someone who bought it because they were promised AirPods by the end of October -- about a month after the phone went on sale. In fact, I'd love to see someone return it for that reason just to see what Apple would do.

Second -- BT is not popular with many people for several major reasons:

1) it's difficult to use, mostly revolving around pairing issues
2) it suffers from reliability issues like dropouts and lag
3) they tend to be bulky, with cables linking earbuds, etc.
4) battery life tends to be limited, and unpredictable, especially on more portable models
5) they tend to be expensive
6) there tends to be a lot of low quality offerings in the low-end of the price spectrum that have turned people off
7) they offer lower quality audio than wired alternatives

In removing the headphone jack, Apple needed to offer an alternative to ameliorate the removal of the headphone jack, about which Apple was on the defensive from the moment they took the stage, and offered little legitimate support for doing. Yes Apple offered an adapter to continue using the old 3.5mm headphones -- while that mitigates the decision somewhat, it was more akin to pouring salt into the wound. Then they bundle Lightning EarPods with it, which could have been a huge positive, but the fact they can't be used with anything else -- in particular a Mac -- makes them less than an optimal replacement for the headphone jack.

So Apple made their agenda clear -- wireless is the future. Not only that, but they tell us they understand that BT is a "bag of hurt" to use a phrase Steve Jobs once applied to another popular problematic technology for Apple. In response they give us AirPods which solves 6 out of the 7 issues most people have with BT:

1) Ridiculously simplified pairing between Apple devices
2) No more dropouts or lag
3) ultra slim and compact design
4) Apple offers the longest battery life available for such a tiny device, with quick charge boosts offering 3 hours for every 15 minutes, up to 24 more hours. It also offers single pod use thus extending mono listening up to 53 more hours, without interruption.
5) For the technology offered they are somewhat reasonably priced.
6) Apple is a trusted name in quality, and has produced a product specifically designed to work with the iPhone 7

So Apple had to release this product with the removal of the headphone jack to demonstrate that wireless was indeed the future, since the existing BT market is generally not good enough to satisfy the many potential customers who have tried BT and had a bad experience and rejected it, or are confused by the offerings and limitations, or frustrated by the limitations of power, reliability, and complications of pairing. Not to mention their paucity of support for Lightning options. The AirPods are a huge step forward. The Beats offerings are likewise important -- though the only two currently available come with the added inconvenience of using micro-USB connections rather than Lightning, not to mention added bulk and expense over standard earbuds. And since Apple couldn't really address the audio quality issues and cost at this juncture, they offered an alternative via the inexpensive adapter, or Lightning (albeit limited).

Demand has nothing to do with expected quality and/or expectations.
Unless we're saying that Walmart and McDonald's are the best...
Multiply demand with price and you get a more relevant figure (high demand at high price indicates desirability as well as significant income).

They do sound excellent but I can't get over how dorky they look. Q-Tips come to mind. It is going to take a lot of sexy models wearing these to make them look cool. I will refer to these design abortions as Apple's Edsel. That said Apple will probably sell a billion of them.
