I still cannot understand why anyone would buy these as they are substantially inferior in sound compared to most other wireless earbuds.

Not only that, they are a heck of a lot more expensive too!

Plus you can lose them!

And then pay an additional $70 to replace one! Ridiculous.

It just boggles me. I have the Jaybird X2's which I got for $80 and they've been serving me incredibly well with exceptional sound, and they have a band around both earpieces so you don't lose them.

This is how the AirPods should've been, Apple.
Well everyone has different tastes. I bought the X2s and returned them immediately because they were uncomfortable and I thought they sounded bad.

Our local Apple store is modifying all iPhone 7's with a headphone jack retrofit. They are selling like hotcakes....

And then I woke up:(

I really wanna know he sound quality of these things...... For 160ish dollars they certainly have to sound better then EarPods?
In a Macworld video, the reviewer described them as really loud and the bass is better than the Ear Pods that ship with the phone and better than the Libratone bluetooth over the ear headphones she'd recently been reviewing.

I'm hoping they are decent as well but remember that $160 is not just about the sound. There's a ton of other functionality built in. Even if they are only moderately better than the Ear Pods, and I'm fairly certain they will be much better, the ability to move them seamlessly from device to device, the Siri integration, stopping/starting playback so easily and portability makes it worth every penny for me.

I'd love to buy myself a pair, but the fact that you have to use Siri to change the volume is a total dealbreaker for me. Would it be possible for Apple to push more gesture/tap based controls through a software update, or am I better off waiting for AirPods 2.0?

Yeah. that's it for me as well. Otherwise they look great. I also wonder if the sound will be out of sync with video while both streaming and watching downloaded content. If somebody who gets them posts a review covering this, I'd appreciate it.

That could be done easily with a software update. Heck I was thinking one ear could have siri and basic controls, the other could have volume control. If you remove one from your ear then the default no matter what should be siri. Again, could be done easily with a software update but that's completely up to how far Apple wants to allow you to have control.

I think you have a different view on losing something that the rest of the world. By it's very nature it's an accident. Therefore you could lose them to... then you have to pay $80 to replace them.

And well if I had those monstrosities... I'd lose them too.

I am of course being a bit sarcastic.. I have bought variations of those in the past - Plantronics and they were ok.

I'm no audiophile, but I don't really care about bass all too much, as a cheap pair of skull candy headphones can accomplish that. I've also read mixed reviews of how "seamless" they sync up across all devices. I suppose I'll wait for more reviews as my Amps Air are doing just fine.

Spot on man.
People need to be #1 when it comes to apple purchases so they can "show off" to their pals probably. I'm with you, over priced, easy to loose and I bet the sound is inferior to cheaper options. I have the jay birds and they would great. People just like to buy into hype and brag

Excited for wireless headphones in 2016?

Yup. The same way I was stoked over the Apple Pencil. There were tons of styluses for the iPad. Some good, some bad, but none which worked the way the Pencil did. It was the first stylus I honestly didn't mind using in public, and it will likely be the last as well.

Same here. I don't use wireless headphones in public for a variety of reasons, from size to bulk to battery life, and the Airpods promise to solve all that. Looks like the Airpods will be the first set of wireless earbuds I will start using extensively when I am outdoors. And maybe even when I am at home as well.

Come Monday people are going to get them in store
With limited availability and Christmas in a week I'm willing to bet demand is still going to be high. News of in store availability has been out for 24 hours now but as of right now the average selling price on eBay is stil between 300-320 dollars. Even after seller fees that's at least a hundred bucks profit. Not bad for a couple clicks and a trip to the mailbox.

I'm hoping that with the retail availability on Monday, I will be able to order them online with store pick-up. Otherwise, I don't think I will be getting a pair before Christmas. Time will tell....
Don't bet on it. To my knowledge Apple has never allowed in store pickup when quantity was limited at launch. If they handed what few units they had out to people who ordered from the app while stiffing the poor saps that had been standing in line since 7am, they'd have a riot on their hands.

As others have said, your opinions on sound quality are 2nd hand at best and subjective.

They are more expensive because they are effectively 2 completely separate wireless devices. They don't rely on a cable running over your head or behind your neck to drive a second earphone from the same receiver. I personally hate the connecting cable on my otherwise excellent Plantronics Backbeat Fit headphones.

Not everyone is so inept that they would lose an AirPod without immediately noticing. It's a wonder how women (and men) manage to wear diamonds on their ears without going crazy with worry that they might lose them! And diamonds don't suddenly make the music stop in one ear when they fall out!

Being able to pay to replace a single AirPod is considerably better than being forced to buy a whole new set if you are unlucky/inept enough to lose one.

Subjective remark: Those X2's are seriously fugly but only in my opinion of course.

Over ear Wireless headphones are what I've been using for about a year. I don't use them often in public for the reasons you stated. I'm excited about wireless as well, but I can control volume and Siri, I just have to hold the home button down, which I can do without taking the phone out of my pocket. Looks are subjective but I think airpods look way more ridiculous than most headphones on the market and I don't think I would want to wear them in public either.

At the risk of all the hate, I use beats studio wireless and really enjoy them.

Call me old fashioned but looks like I'm stuck using my phone to answer calls when I'm on the go.

My order email from four days ago said shipped for the 20th, I was a bit disappointed since I should have called to upgrade to one day shipping.

I didn't even plan on buying these, but I was on the throne and nothing else to do, so I headed to Apple.com wondering when these were available and little did I know they were available, so I ordered two. One for myself, the other for my mother who wanted wireless earphones and she's okay with the fit on the earpods. Only after did I realize that they sold out the first batch within half an hour.

I don't use over-ear headphones because I find them too inconvenient to take out and keep. Plus I wear spectacles, so it's hard to find a pair which is comfortable for longer periods of wear. Believe it or not, the two pairs I have found so far are my Sony hear.on headphones and the stock EarPods.

I agree that looks are subjective, but people are the ultimate arbiters of what looks okay and what doesn't, and public perception isn't set in stone. I have never understood why it's considered acceptable to have a giant pair of cans muffling your ears while walking around but having two tiny, almost imperceptible white sticks poking out of your ear is considered a fashion faux pas?

Heck, for women with longer hair, the Airpods would be practically invisible!
