My hesitation with the pro is eventually with my experience with the first and second AirPods, the battery starts to degrade in 1 1/2 years into its use. I can stomach $140 but $249 every 2 years is hard to swollow. I know my AirPods will degrade in a year.
For both the AirPods and the battery case, if they degrade to below 80% during the first year, Apple will replace them (one or more times) for free under the original warranty. That’s in the US; other countries have longer initial warranties or other consumer-friendly laws.

If you buy the $29 AppleCare+, for the one-year extension period after the initial warranty expires, Apple will replace the AirPod batteries once (and only once) for $29. Same for the battery case. But the batter(ies) have to be less than 80% to be eligible for replacement.

I find it mad how all these reviews don’t talk about sound quality it’s headphones that’s the most important part

$249 ➗ 730 days = 34¢/day

My original AirPods battery is still performing well after 2½ years of use (so my cost has been 17¢/day so far), but if you are not going to get your 34¢ of value out of the new AirPods Pro, then it would be a smart decision for you to not purchase them.

They are definitely a lifespan limited device, so they really need to be thought of as a subscription to the AirPod Pro service.

You are correct, AirPods may be great out of the box, but the battery will become the limiting factor off its lifespan.

While the buds may be working fine, it will be unusable once the battery decays and unable to hold charges. In most situations, the case’s battery will outlive the buds.

I would go with something like Solo Pro, or just wait for upcoming new Studio. Those Beats are more robust, share the same tech, and feature a gigantic battery life. Even when the battery decays, a proper non destructive battery replacement is possible (at least that’s the case with current Beats).

After owning the original AirPods (and seeing it becomes unusable just after 2 years), I would never go with another disposable buds like this.

Beats headphones for the win!!

Or in other words, that’s two Starbucks tall coffees (my preferred method of universal measurement).

Opportunity cost. Not terrible, but not great either.

Wanna guess how much (admittedly a set of) replacement tips and wings for Beats X cost?

**
$40 at a time when a completely new ‘pair’ of Beats X costs $100.

Yey. A new set of headphones Apple is selling. - said No one...sorry, I have to hold back vitriol and it is so difficult when you care about a company as beautiful and smart as Apple... What else is R&D hiding, besides headphones? (I know I only speak for me in this case, but I have too many Apple bought headphones now...)

Dude. I like Apple too, but it is a Business. And businesses have only one goal: make money by selling products. Otherwise it is called a charity. A good business makes more money than it spends, and good businesses can persuade its customers to buy a new product from them by offering something that its customers don't have or is better than what its customers currently have or an addition or variant of said product(s).

You know, otherwise the folks at Coca Cola would have been kiiiiiinda bored by now, if they had only sold the same original Coke as they have done so since approximately 1889 and did not try anything else.

So that's why Apple is releasing each year new variants of their iPhones, Macs and iPads even though their products from last year are stil perfectly fine. And the same goes for AirPods. And i have some news for you, you can expect new AirPods in 2020 or 2021 for sure!

I really wish someone (Apple please?) could work on the latency problem with Bluetooth Headphones.
if you make music on an iPhone / iPad it’s unusable! You can’t play anything in realtime without a delay and it’s just crap. So the whole ”spontaneous“ make music wherever I am on my phone doesn’t even make sense when most phones don’t have a headphone socket and we’re all encouraged to buy blue tooth headphones.

is it impossible to solve?

4$ for one, a pair or a whole 3-size kit?

Btw thankfully not overpriced like Audeze accessories..

I wonder if it's an entire set of small/medium/large.
Either way, you can probably get someone with differently sized ears to give you the ones they don't need for free.

My initial impressions from the now buried thread:

Finally got home after work, gym and dinner to my new AirPods Pro. Default seal are perfect for my ears, after having to adjust the left one a bit and re-run the Ear Tip Fit Test (in Bluetooth > AirPods (i) ).

Have run a few tracks from my HomePod reference playlist and they sound fantastic. Clearly better than the AirPods with deep bass where it drops in in Say Something (although the very start sub bass gets cut off). Podcasts also sound natural without any of the “voices in your head” effect you can get from in-ears.

It sounds better with ANC on rather than Transparency to me. I can’t comment on the ANC just yet because I’m alone with the cats in my apartment. But I’m pretty happy with them so far.

The case is slightly bigger, but not enough to make a difference in practice. The lid is a bit looser than I’d like, but it still snaps shut with a satisfying twack.

I’ll probably give more thoughts on them tomorrow with commute and work putting them through its paces.

I wouldn't expect the iPhone to be real time, but the iPad Pro yes - they are touting this as a computer replacement.

1) MR links to an AirPod review from Gruber and the headline is about a $4 replacement part.
2) People buy new cars every 6 years (on average) and folks are complaining about an electronic device that needs to be replaced, perhaps, every 2 years. How long would a $100 dress shirt last if you wore it every day?
IMO, decide what you value and spend you money appropriately. I currently do not own an AirPods because I don't have a need for them; the wired buds are sufficient for me. But my two daughters both have them and like them. And I would consider getting the AirPod Pros if my lifestyle changed so that they would be useful for me. (Note: I do trail run etc. but never with music. I want to listen to what is going on around me, such as bikes, bears, and snakes.)

It should honestly be free, we are entitled to that. After all, we are locked in their Apple ecosystem. Therefore, what I say is valid.

Apple would do that if it weren't for entitled people who would claim they need to use a new tip every single time they put in their AirPods. Like twice a day, they want a new tip.
