They are overpriced, all wireless headphones are. It isn't just the Apple headphones.

Most of us could probably "afford" to pay that much for headphones. That's not it, Apple realizes there are ppl gullible enough to over pay for their product accessories, just so they can flaunt it around to everyone they know. It is a status symbol to many. And yes I know some ppl are willing to pay for quality also. But I believe it is mainly for vanity purposes.
Seems like a bunch of generalizations/bias in this statement, based on your own perceptions/bias.

Again, there is a lot of new tech and design incorporated in these, so anyone buying them is essentially an early adopter and is paying for the development of that tech. If Apple does license the W1 chip as they have said, we can expect more devices from competitors and more selection in terms of price, color, features, fit, etc.
When did Apple say they'd be licensing the W1? I see squawking tech "journalists" all over the place saying they should, but I haven't seen anything from Apple.

that should really help with those quality control issues :)

how about much better audio quality, much better battery life and sweat proof for the same price? I actually prefer the cable

or

https://earin.com/

or

https://www.bragi.com/thedash/

You might prefer them but I know you don't own them because they all have fatal flaws. Taking the Jaybirds out, because of the cable that ties them together and thus lacks the synchronization needed for true wireless.

The Bragi's have an extremely limited range, 5 feet maximum and in most cases less, ok battery performance if all music is onboard, not great streaming form devices.

The Earins have a charge capacity of 2.5hrs and the charge case holds only about 9hrs worth of charge. And once again, as with the bragi dash, the reception range is very poor with the Earins.

When I spoke to the Apple Rep he seemed to think the 24 hours of battery time is standby time. I said so you expect everyone to charge their AirPods every night and he said yes.. I said its 24 hours listening time not standby time yet everyone in the shop agreed with each other and made out I had got it all wrong.. Go figure! They did finally allow me to change the AirPods though. Talk about poor training!
I hate these situations when the sales person is so obviously wrong but you insisting that they are wrong just makes you look like a jerk. And yes, this is a problem of training but with Apple's limited product line, just reading the product description on Apple's website should be the least to expect from their personal.

At apple.com/airpods the 4th main paragraph reads: "thanks to a charging case that holds multiple additional charges for more than 24 hours of listening time".

I had Genius bar personnel explain to me that all apps in the app switcher on iOS are still running and that it wasnt' the setting called 'Use Mobile Data For' that controlled the mobile data usage but the 'Background app refresh' setting controlled it.

I still don't understand this, the Airpods have been shown to survive submersion and going through a laundry cycle.....after that who really thinks sweat is going to be the downfall of a set of Airpods?

A lot of electronics can survive a dunk and work right afterwards. It's 10 or 20+ days later that rust catches up to the functionality. To my knowledge, that particular demo doesn't have a followup saying that a weeks+ after being submerged and going through the wash, they still work just fine.

Again, if they were waterproof or water resistant, Apple would be promoting that as a feature. We should not be so gullible to latch onto anything beyond Apple's own claims and spinning such seemingly bonus features like they are fact. We're not really helping each other out by doing this kind of thing. And Apple doesn't need us working so hard to try to sell each other Apple's products.

Wish I could wear in-ear speakers. I must have some sort of misshapen ears because the slightest movement, such as breathing, causes them to fall out.

It's over ear for me, I'm afraid.

Hmm. These particular earphones don't fit me at all, and are in fact kinda painful to wear…BUT I've had several pairs of in-ears that work great, and feel great, too. In particular Apple's own soft-silicone in-ear models. Shame they don't make 1) a lightning version, and b) a wireless version.

Just picked up a pair after reading the reviews. With the production delays, I was expecting a hot mess. But the reviews and actual use proved otherwise. These things are awesome. I have Sony 1000x bluetooth cans, but I live in a big city, so not good to be walking around with NC headphones on. AirPods are perfect when I am on the subway to work and walking on the street. Sound is pretty good and the pairing is flawless. Wish it had volume control on the unit, but I have an Apple Watch, so it's not a deal breaker. I think they are priced fairly for what you are getting. I paid much more for the Bragi Dash, which are absolutely useless for me since the bluetooth connection outside is atrocious, even on the latest firmware.

I love mine, but there is a problem with them threatening to fall out of my ears when I'm running. So I stick with my Beats 2 for that. Different tool for a different job I guess. The Airpods are great for just walking around, working at my desk etc. Beats are a little cumbersome for that but brilliant for working out and being more active. Either way they're both better than a cord.

An Apple Store sales minion actually let me use his personal ones for a demo. I was impressed. He picked out a tune on my iPhone, and it sounded amazing. I went directly for Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon, and it was damn awesome.

After having some early models of Bluetooth ear fillers, I was extremely impressed...

I just have to wait until February to get them...

Does it sound like they have problems selling at the current price?

Tech geeks will rush out to buy them....it's a limited market.

I listened to them today. A colleague at work has a pair and he's one to run out to get the first of everything. He's got both Apple Watches, iPhone 7 Plus and the latest MBP with a touch bar. He's very happy with all this stuff which is what is important. However, having now tried it, it's my personal opinion that SJ would have thrown these in the trash.

As far as sound quality is concerned, they're garbage. They sound marginally better than the original ones you get in the box. A little deeper and they've somehow managed to get some more bass out of them. That's no bad thing, but ultimately they're a cheap pair of $20 drivers in an expensive $140 technology jacket.

And this is what makes them stand out. The technology that connects them to your phone. It's seriously impressive and job well done to Apple. He still needs to be fired and replaced but kudos to Cook and the development team to come up with this. I loved the instant connectivity. I loved the status on screen and the deep integration with the iPhone. Awesome stuff.

However if the Airpods float your boat in terms of quality, that's fine by me but I would much rather wait and see what will develop in the coming year....

Just to add, they don't stay in my ears. Maybe I have strange ears, but the stock earbuds have never stayed in. I tried using them to go running but they would fall out all the time. I ended up buying a pair of SE215's which stay firmly in my ears. I now use a cheap pair of wireless Anker earbuds. They cost me $30 and sound the same as the Apple Airpods in terms of quality.

What interests me more is Apple licensing the technology to 3rd parties outside their business (not Beats). Brands like Shure, B&W, Klipsch and Sennheiser will really make use of this. Top quality audio with the decent connectivity behind it.

This is what we should be waiting for....and this is exactly why they're overpriced.

Apple has historically always under promoted water resistance, because they don't want to warranty it, but their devices are far more water resistant than they actually tout.

I was interested in these at first, but I will wait for now. Not being able to control the volume during phone calls without touching the phone is a deal killer for me.

What is the point of having great range, that will work from across the room, or while your phone is in a bag, if I have to take my phone out to adjust the volume?

Plus, this would be a no-go for hands-free driving where I work.

All of the other players in the wireless earbud market cost more money and in many if not most cases sound worse than AirPods and have major connectivity issues. If you knew what you were talking about you'd be talking about brands like JayBird, Samsung IconX, Braghi and a $200-$250+ price point...but you're not so I know you don't know what you're talking about.
