I got a bad feeling about these being rushed to market the week before Christmas

Rushed? They were delayed for technical reasons. Apple intended for October, but if anything, they weren't rushed. I know they are releasing before the holidays, but its not really logical to say these are rushed with the fact they were not released on time to begin with. I think most will be pleased with these who ordered and understand exactly what they are receiving.

If they do experience technical issues, then you can move to the assumption of what contributed to the issue, I.e, 'Rushed.'

sinsin - this is using the same bluetooth profile.

where did apple ever advertise that these are higher grade earbuds?
You can't move the goal post now.
Your original post didn't specify anything about Bluetooth profile, you are defining that now.
Your original post didn't specify anything about what Apple advertised these air pods as, you are also defining that now.
No one can read your mind to ascertain your original intent.

In any regard, your original question is subjective.
Only you can define what is "WORSE" ... for you.

I think the use case for the W1 chip fits a smaller subset of people, but in general, I'm thrilled. I frequently swap between music on my Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. Swapping connections between my watch and my phone is a pain with my current wireless headphones. Cutting that headache out of my 5am gym routine is worth the price alone. Then when you add a daily break at Starbucks and being able to easily switch between my iPhone connection to a MacBook connection when I want to watch YouTube or get work done...even better. I'm not anticipating the best quality, but the "it just works" approach is what I want for my day-to-day.

Here's my justification for buying AirPods (I currently use EarPods), based on my requirements for a new set:

1) Under $300, I'm not an audiophile, but can afford to throw some money around.
2) No over-the-ear or on-the-hear headphones; I wear glasses and these are painful/leave visible blisters on my ears/nose.
3) No wrap around the ear (i.e., sports such as Powerbeats) headphones; same reason as 2.
4) Wireless; obvious here.
5) No comply tips or any earbud inserts. I travel often for my job and have had to purchase headphones at airports because I've lost my tips from my Jawbones on several occasions. Also, I run 4x a week; noise suppression from tips is deadly.

AirPods are perfect for me, but I'd love for someone to show me a single alternative.

I can't believe how pathetic the haters are in here. I have Bang and Olufsen earbuds that suck ass and swallow... I also have some beats, and audi-technica. I can't wait for the AirPods. I have a high degree of confidence they will be everything Ive been waiting for and then some... especially after reading the most recent reviews

I’m pretty sure there will be an AirPod firmware update next month that will strip its ability to tell you how much battery life is left. According to Apple, “It’s just better that way."

Actually, based on the fact 15 min will get you 3 hours, I'd love an audible alarm at the final 15 min. of play time.

I've noticed I've been spending more time on r/apple on Reddit rather than MacRumors lately... MR user base has declined in maturity.

Thats a tad better but you still have to filter a lot of noise to get a good signal.

LOL. Using $1000 headphones with a phone? Definitely want your advice on what to buy.
And amplifier. LOL SOME PEOPLE LIKE SOUND QUALITY

at least the gear is every penny worth the 1000. wouldn't expect you (somebody who actually likes the airpods) to understand that at all though

I just got an email telling me my order has shipped and will arrive on the 19th here in Australia. Sweet! Looks like I'll get to be one of the first people in the world to lose an AirPod (or two)!

Until then though, I'm going to love not having to deal with wires while listening to my music when I'm out and about.
