$1K cheaper than my 1993 Quadra 700. Sweet!

Yikes! I paid more for my Quadra 840AV. It was the "world's fastest computer" when I got it. Wonder how it'd fare now?

I paid around $5,000 for a Macintosh SE-30 back in 1988 and that was with an educational discount. When I read where people are complaining about today's prices I suspect that they are all under 30 years old.

Because $3999 + $3000 + $600 + $1600 + $800 = $9999.

There is a difference between saying:
  • we estimate the price to probably be $9999
  • we estimate the price to be approximately $9999
One is saying you attach a reasonably high probability to be exactly $9999, the other is saying it will be close to $9999. If close to means to you plus/minus $100, than you say you expect the price to be between $9899 and $10099. If your uncertainty can only be expressed in units of $100 (ie, you could not say it is between plus/min $25), it doesn't make sense to express your midpoint with a much higher accuracy. Or said differently, if your accuracy is in the range of $100, people mentally prepare for that range and it is of no use to them to know the midpoint will be exactly $9999 (or $9998), because they will have to budget for $10100.

There is no specific mention of the old Mac Pros being discontinued. The general implication is there, but wouldn't it be nice if the current models received a modern update, as well? It's certainly technically possible, if not likely.

I'd be among those interested in 2013/2014 update that included dual-Xeons (16/24-core machines, what!?), 8 RAM slots, 4x PCIe, a multitude of USB 3.0 ports, etc.

Gotta be an awesome gamingcomputer.
I think i buy one.

We still have no idea if CrossFire is supported on these GPUs, even when booting Windows. So if you're buying one primarily as a game machine you're possibly throwing one of the GPUs away.

When I wasn't sure whether I'd be able to buy into the nMP before year's end I was scoping out some of the 12 core MP refurbs. They actually didn't look too shabby except for the USB2. I have a ton of external USB stuff and couldn't live with that. If they'd just upgrade the 2012 model with USB3 I'd give it serious thought.

Just checked the Apple ordering system, interesting...
Suffice to say if you want one by christmas, a letter to Santa might be more effective!

Deal Breaker w/o Airplay Enabled 4k display

Waiting for this since the announcement, but must have an Airplay enabled (wireless) 4k monitor to go with.

Perhaps the way to go is find a retail 4k and use an(other) AppleTV on it?

Just looking at the Mac Pro page on the Apple Store and...

...

...am I the only one who wants the tower to look like the BOX it comes in?

It's neat, easily stackable, and with internal angles all 90 degrees there is probably room for internal expansion.

I want one to replace my original mac pro, which died a few months ago (all 4 of the hard drives fried at once when I moved and turned it on.) Anyone want to buy my restaurant so I can afford the new one? :)
Still it lasted 6.5 years, never slowed down, and I'd fix it but it won't run the current mac os without hacking it. I used to use it for music and math programs, but haven't done that in years.

Will be ordering 2 of these tomorrow. Can't WAIT!!! :D

Something in the $4500-$5000 range. I'm hoping I can down grade the video cards and go for the larger 512GB and more ram. Most likely will have to get the ram separate from elsewhere. I don't need the video cards as much as I need the CPU and PCI-e SSD. I currently have 2 Nvidia GTX 285 Mac editions in my 2009 Mac Pro now. The D300 is SURE to be way better, so no need for the D500-D700. I just need 3 displays and something to convert thunderbolt to Fiber for my networking. IS there such an adapter? Or will I have to go with a PCI expansion chassis of some kind to make that happen. I'd prefer not to.

The 10G Fiber interfaces currently all look like expansion chassis with PCI cards (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpressse_10gbeadapter.html) Sonnettech which someone mentioned earlier and ATTO also makes a similar device. The pro may push some expansion in this area. Presumably some larger shops are using Isilon or similar NAS storage devices that will push for some more 10g ethernet solutions.

No SD slot?! Epic fail - just another iToy.

But seriously, while $3000 is just the starting price, it's almost tempting to get a machine that I never would have considered buying before. The form factor seems to be extremely controversial but I totally love it.

Here's hoping that when they announce the next displays they add support into OS X for a bit depth higher than 8bits per Chanel. It'll be really nice to see the world finally move past the new posterized world created by jpegs and lcds ~13 years ago. Maybe we'll get 12 or 16 bpc. *sigh*
I've been saying this for a while.
I could care less about greater vertical and horizontal resolution when we are still stuck at 8 bits per color channel (actually less in some ways).
There was a great white paper about HD video on some videography site. It was either no film school or maybe Magic Lantern?
Essentially all of the "Pro" video formats don't even do justice to render color and the range of light and dark that current sensors can pull in.
Going to UHD 2k or 4k just makes the posterization more detailed.

Actually the Apple MacII is 33 years ago.
Macintosh, 1984 was 29 years ago.
Mac II, 1987 was 26 years ago.
Are you talking about the Apple II?

It's unlikely. The topic has come up on Adobe forums a few times. I know because I searched for it. The answer always seemed to be that Apple was dismissive whenever they asked about plans to support it, and on one occasion they claimed Apple suggested there were no plans to support it at that time. Since Apple oems their own displays, they aren't great about adding support for other things.

Totally the best gaming machine on the market bar none. It's expensive but there's nothing on the market that comes close to beating the new Mac Pro. It's a beast for gamers, designers, bloggers and video producers.

I would love to think so, and I am going to be REALLY interested to see how the MacPro compares performance wise with a PC of the same or far less cost when running the very latest entertainment software out there today.

I would love it to blow PC's away for high end entertainment software

I just wish it was available in silver aluminium instead of this silly black dust magnet.
