All Paid Google One Subscribers Now Get VPN Access

It's better than nothing. Many people don't have access to a VPN because they don't normally need one. This Google VPN sure came in handy for me when I was stuck in Dubai airport for 7 hours, with no roaming, and only the airport WiFi.

If you were going to use a VPN regularly, sure, you wouldn't use this. But it's a nice feature to have if you already pay for the storage.

Everyone is so self-righteous when it comes to Google products. I'm pretty sure Apple gathers tons of data and sells it just as much as Google does. C'mon guys get over it.
Google is a glorified ad company, selling user information is their business model. The user is googles product. Apple sells products, it isn’t about righteousness, simple common sense.

Google and "PRIVATE" (VPN = virtual PRIVATE network) are an oxymoron. Everything they do involves collecting data on people by baiting them with free, or close to free services.

As I'm sure every post would say, Google is evil. But I have no problem with them. I know what they do. No biggie. Just use common sense. Unfortunately most people don't have that. (my tip for common sense: buy AAPL)

Google running a VPN is like McDonalds running an exercise gym.
No, McDonalds operating a gym would at least help your problems somewhat.

This is like hiring McDonalds as your dietician when you’re already obese or have type ii diabetes and you’re trying to lose weight.

It seems weird to me that, as a Google One subscriber, I am hearing about this first on Macrumors and no emails or messages to me from Google about this.

That’s awesome!

I get my Google One through T-Mobile because T-Mobile offers a plan for $15/month that includes 2TB for Google Drive, etc. and unlimited photo and video back up with Google Photos

I’m glad that I’ll also now have VPN included in my Google One plan as well - having a VPN will be great for when I travel overseas

It's not "included" Lol,..you are paying full price via your plan. T-Mobile then get trailing commission from Google. Minus Google One from your plan, and that it what your ACTUAL cell plan costs.

FYI; VPN access (Android only)..you should really read the fine print at T-Mobile.

People hate on Google so much it's kind of funny. People know Google makes most of its money from data and ads already.
Let's forget all the work they did creating PageRank, Gmail in 2004 everybody begging for an invite, Google Maps (original Maps on iPhone for a while), YouTube acquisition and growth, I'm sure NOBODY uses YouTube, buying DoubleClick (which is why most people hate Google and their ad business), Chrome Browser.
Yes Android isn't as great as iOS, yes they create and destroy tons of products, Google Reeder, Google+ etc etc. They aren't some perfect amazing company.

Google Search helped the internet explode in use and popularity. No hate and punching on Google will ever change that.
Also Privacy and Internet in the same sentence are hilarious. It's okay, just put it all on Google ;)
It seems we have quite a few who hate on Google, but happily make exceptions for YouTube :D

I don't think he is suggesting that he is getting anything for free or at a discount with a cell plan. He appears to be referring to the optional Google One plan offered through T-Mobile for $15/month which includes VPN access (Android or iOS), 2 TB storage and unlimited Google Photos.

Ok, stupid question: how do I actually access this VPN? Looking on my account page and don't see anything.
On Google's Home Page, go to the upper right, click on your profile picture (assuming you are logged in) and click "Manage Your Google Account". Then Click on "Google One", then on the left click "Benefits". You'll then see something that says "VPN protection for multiple devices". Click View Details. You can then download the app to your computer/desktop.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.
Credit where credit is due… besides lividly remembering the search overhaul days (finally a search engine that worked), Gmail was quite the game changer too: everybody was scraping by with like 50MBs limits and here comes this behemoth of a 1GB (was it?) for all your emails, basically infinite at the time, that would even also increase overtime.

But I also agree with the stone throwers, there’s that back feeling of something nefarious going on, the censoring, the lack of innovation, things devolving, etc… Google search is a mess imo, everything is Ads and SEOs results. Looking for how a certain fabric is made? Get flooded with how to buy backpacks, jeans, curtains, houses and cat food plus more at Walmart, Amazon or random “The Backpack+” online store. Plus “the 5 things that space aliens wear, the sixth will leave you speechless”.

I get closer in relevance to what I’m looking for by typing “Reddit” at the end or trying to find a Discord server of the associated inquiry. That’s a complete regression for a search engine.

Also, the choice of priorities feels dishonest. The YouTube downvotes counter, which apparently affected a tiny tiny portion, was deemed critical to tackle and they did. But the darn bots that pollute the comments sections with a channel’s avatar copycat clone phishing or spamming the whole thing, (which affects and degrades the experience of 100% of the users out there) hasn’t been dealt with in years.

There’s one thing that will always puzzle everybody here: people complaining about privacy, security, etc of anything but also proceeding to publicly post daily what are they having for breakfast, and where, and with what today’s underwear’s brand on the snaptiktakograms.

He appears to be very excited over nothing.

VPN access is Android only,..it clearly states that.

Spot on. The entire post. 👏
I have the same sentiment of Google. I’m not sitting here praising them. But people seem to easily forget all of the innovations. They are whatever now, but it was a huge part of what got us here and is still here.

Below is a screen shot from the page I had linked to in my previous post. The last bullet point for the $15/month plan clearly states, "Enjoy VPN access for Android and iOS."

All the Google hate from Apple fan boys. Yet Apple sold the Chinese people out, including all of their data and privacy so they could gain access to that market. They paid the CCP 270 billion for this right. I guess you could say Apple used all that money Google pays them to make them the default option to help pay their CCP bill.

Apple privacy stance is nothing but a marketing ploy. I love Apple products but they are no better or worse than Google. They are both for profit companies. Apple is more of hypocrite in reality. Google is pretty much up front about their business model. Google Chrome > than Safari 8 days a week.

Every. Single. Thing. you list here is, in fact, used to gather, profile, disseminate, and sell user data en masse. Several of the things listed here were, in fact, specifically designed for such a mission. Google, from the date of its inception, has created and targeted that information exchange, all the while being smacked by legal entities around the world for their intrusive behavior, and all the while completely ignoring the penalties and orders to stop doing so in many ways.

No amount of shiny new things can distract from the absolute truth that Google's mission is, in fact, data control. How intrusive they are in your life depends on your level of tolerance (or ignorance) to how you hand over your data to them via casual use of their search engine or by allowing full data snooping via Chrome or Gmail.

As for Android... My youngest special-needs daughter will receive an Android phone for her birthday this month. Why Android? Because the parental software that can be installed on it has the ability to snoop almost every tap, type, and scroll on that device so we can help manage her usage and keep her safe. Android is sooo open to mining like that it makes it the best tool for a concerned parent. Apple's iOS is sooo tightly locked down that parenting software simply cannot snoop at a level that is as useful as the Android. Oh, the irony. If a parent can snoop that data, what is Google doing with your Android?
Ah yes an Apple have never been "smacked by legal entities" for its business practices either.

Bingo. Anyone who uses it for free isn't a customer, you're the product. Even if you pay for it, you may be a customer, but you're still the product.
The best part about it, is that I know that. If I use a Google product it is because it is better (for me at least) than any other in its class.

From my experience, using products from both companies for many years (Apple IIgs was my first computer in high school)

Chrome > Safari
Google Maps > Apple Maps
Gmail > iCloud email

Google Search > than the rest
YouTube simply has no competitors.

I do not really use any other Google products. I love my Apple products but both companies are for profit and that is what matters to both of them more than anything else.

Laugh now. In the not so distant future, the self-serve terminal at the grocery store will refuse to sell you sweets and carb-laden foods because of your medical Body Mass Index, as reported to your bank (who will stop the transaction) by your Global Identity Profile.

See, practices like this are already the everyday norm in China, which disallows Google largely to replace it with their own data-gathering processes. You think some do-gooder, probably an appointee in a ministry or federal department, won't try to promote something like that "for the good of everyone?" Think again.

In a digital world, the one with the data is king. All else are peasants. Or subjects. Or servants.
Your credit card companies and cell providers have so much data on you. They know where you are, what you buy, when you buy it, and every single DNS call your cell phone makes. They sell that data. So are you going to stop using them?

It's sad to think people will fall for this ****. This is like trusting a company who's entire business model is to profit off of user data with ALL your data.
Funny of all the large and small personal data hacks which data companies haven't had one? You, and others might browse through your cookie storage before sounding so smug.
