I also think my fingers are less likely to poke into landscape orientation photos and videos if they could just nudge that bump away from the very edge of the corner. I'm assuming the engineering of the internals won't allow for that, though, so this is going to be an awkward arrangement to use.

Isn't the opposite problem at work here? Companies like Samsung already have good solutions. The Galaxy S10 line has multiple cameras with a trivial hump and a far more pleasant arrangement. Apple could do this, but wants/needs to have a unique look.
Other makers have the big square, but they place it in the center of the back, which looks much nicer.

I have had EVERY iphone to date.......
But that back camera is hideous. Please Apple....move the camera to above the Apple logo and put them all in a single file row....please
Imagine all the photos taken with a finger in them. It is hard enough to hold my Xs Max sometimes when taking pictures.....now the camera bump is getting bigger....
It is really ugly and if true will be an even lower step for Apple. I have to admit that I did not think sinking lower was possible.
But thanks to Ive, we've smaller batteries and thinner phones, in fact so thin that they need to have a battery bump (see the bump case) and a camera bump. Just think if Apple provided proper batteries and camera maybe we could have a phone without any bumps and battery life that lasted more than 6 - 8 hours.

While I do hate the way it looks, I always throw a case on my phone anyways (I go with supcase) so the camera winds up being flush with it anyways. At the point it won't bother me.
On the other hand though, it's not like I have plans to get this phone. The XS will last me a LONG time.

Every year or two, this same thread. Every year or two, record iPhone sales. I'd buy it - it's still an iPhone, after all. As many have said before: how often are you staring at the back of your phone, giving two craps about what it looks like? I guess everyone needs a sounding board (/echo chamber).
And the competition have phones without the huge hump while having much larger batteries.
I bet all the Apple stock I own that this years iPhone doesn’t look anything like that on the back. That mock-up looks like someone just bolted a square onto the back of the phone. No way will the real thing look like that.
