This is a competitor to the Garmin Enduro 2. The people who want these don't give a flying hoot that it looks big on their wrists. They want the functions. The battery lasts for days while the features go continuously not just periodically and it has solar charging. Serious athletes use Garmin. Long distance racers use Garmin. This must burn Apple's butt. So now they are going for it.
I really hope you are right. It also would require Apple to offer more advanced software features. E.g. Garmins PacePro is unmatched by anything on Apple Watch. If they offer more "Pro" features on the software side as well, I would easily pay 1000 bucks for a solid watch.

I just had a funny thought… if this thing really exists and really is designed to cater to extreme sports types, it might be the only Apple product outside of the Mac Pro where the "Pro" moniker makes any sense.

(okay mmmmmaybe also the iPad Pro. not the Macbook Pro, though, loads of normies just buy those because big screen or "the Air must be slow because it's the affordable one")

MacRumor forums: nobody wants a mini, it’s too small and stupid. Get the bigger screen iPhone!

Also MacRumor forums: 49mm is too big and stoooopid! Nobody wants this!

[I don’t really care either way. As a distance runner, I’ll stick with my Garmin unless Apple can compete with super long battery and they start allowing prepaid services to work. I’m not going back to any of the big carriers ever again.]

Now THAT is some good news. And really rare for last minute news; to find out that a larger model is actually larger than previously rumored. Usually sizes are pretty nailed down by rumors.

Most people here don't realize that Apple is trying to get into the more serious sporting segment where Apple Watch quite sucks I'm afraid. I do like wearing it for sport activities but the battery life is a joke compared to Suunto or Garmin watches. If they can work on that and introduce new sport modes (potentially with less interaction to/from the phone), this could convince many athletes (that might be in Apple ecosystem) to switch. Another thing is the software, though. Apple is doing well on the "healthtech" side of things but import/export of workout, map, measurements data would be needed too.
It has to be larger for the battery to be bigger. At this size they can probably achieve the necessary battery life for serious sports use. Side benefit is that a big screen is easier to see, fits more content, and is generally better for those who can wear it.

I'm just keen on a larger Apple Watch.

Let’s face it, when the Apple Watch was first launched in 2015, the possibilities seemed endless and exciting.

Seven years’ later, other than cellular untethering, there’s been very little significant innovation. Incremental dripfeeds at best.

They can’t decide if this is meant to be a fashion item, fitness tracker, or health monitor. And this larger “rugged Pro” is no different.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

that’s grossly unfair, if anything based on the rumors this new Pro is absolutely deciding what it is… a 100% fitness focused watch with the battery life, features, and screen size athletes demand… looks be damned. Clearly this watch isn’t for the masses, it will look like a flavor flav clock on most men, and a dinner plate on most women. This is Apple making a very specific choice, not creating a bland one size fits all watch.

I was about to say "Wow you signed up with a perfect name" and then realized you just signed up.

Welcome aboard.

I’m a bit crushed. I have small 160mm wrists for a man. I think the 45mm Apple Watch still looks “ok” on me in today’s day and age of larger watches and its what I wear daily. I’ve worn Garmin Fenix watches (that is clearly, clearly, clearly the target this new Pro is going after) and their standard size is 47mm… that got me into the range of my wife saying “what the heck is that on your wrist?” and it looked too big, but I guess I could pull it off with a few strange glances. I want this new Apple Watch Pro and I resigned myself that it would be “too big” looking like the Garmin… but 49mm? That’s WAY too big for me, to the extent I don’t think it will be realistically wearable. I bummed Apple seemingly has made this choice, hopefully they have some skinny female models wearing it in the ads just to see what exactly it looks like on smaller wrists, because you know the men will all be 6’4 and 225 with big wrists to make it look normal.

Stop complaining and don’t get it, not everything a company does is for you. Garmin watches get up to 51mm+

Sure but Garmin also offers their high end Fenix lineup in THREE sizes, 42mm, 47mm (standard size, most common), and 51mm. The problem here is that the moment you don’t buy the 49mm Apple Watch Pro but go with a smaller 45/41mm size it seems you lose the extra button, battery life, and extra fitness features based on the rumors. I have to be honest I assumed Apple would go 47mm with the Pro, at 49mm it is really, really, really into “too large” terrority for almost all women (a surprise for Apple) and a large segment of men too.

I probably have smaller wrists than you but would still rock a giant Enduro 2 if it had LTE on it.

This year it’s the body temperature sensor. To aid fertility. Never mind overpopulation and cost of living crisis.
No, this method is mostly used for preventing pregnancies. It's only called "family planning" to sugar coat it for religious fundamentalists

To be fair, we do not know for sure there will only be 1 size of the Pro available. Yes, that may be the case which would be unfortunate but it is also still possible there is more than 1 size coming.

The bigger the better! Hopefully it will house a larger battery so it needs to be charged less often.

sure but with all the rumors and case leaks i think we would have heard of a second size by this point. i’m sure apple will adjust their options in future years based on how this sells. to be honest based on rumors this has the same chip as the Series 6 and 7, so maybe to get battery life better this is how big it had to be today. Maybe next year with the Series 9 which is believed will have a new lower power consuming CPU they will be able to make a 45mm Pro “small” model that has the same “better battery” life as the “large” 49mm model. I just REALLY REALLY want to get this watch but I just think my wrist size has betrayed me and I can’t lol.

This isn’t that different than Garmin. The bigger sizes get better battery, solar, features, etc. I think the F6s didn’t have maps, for example.

Maybe Apple tried to make a smaller version but couldn’t get all the tech in with enough battery life to sell it.

Larger case could also be structural so it can be used for diving to a certain degree like some Garmin models.

in the Fenix 7 generation the size differences mainly allow for more battery life (but even the smallest has great battery life) and the 7X has a flashlight function, there are far less differences than back in the 6 generation. I suspect what we will see is a 45mm Pro version next year when they implement the next generation CPU that uses less power.

So regular Apple Watch 41/45
Pro Apple Watch 45 (2023) / 49

Just a guess. They have to know that at 49mm it makes the watch unworkable for a decent number of users just based on size, it is unusual for Apple to cut out most women for example.

With the rumored Apple Watch Pro expected to be larger than the Apple Watch Series 7 and the rest of the upcoming Series 8 models, leaker Sonny Dickson has shared new images offering an excellent size comparison of the new lineup.

1apple-watch-series-8-pro.jpeg

According to Dickson's sources, the Pro model will have a 49mm case size – larger than an earlier rumor suggesting between 47mm and 48mm. For comparison, the Apple Watch Series 7 is available in 41mm and 45mm case sizes, which is also expected to be mirrored in the standard Series 8 models with identical designs.

Combined with the flat display, a larger 49mm case size for the Apple Watch Pro could result in an even bigger screen size than the 1.99-inches initially reported, and could even turn out to be as large as 2 inches or more, easily making it the largest Apple Watch display yet seen.

Whatever the Apple Watch Pro display size turns out to be, it will compare to 1.691-inches on the 41mm and 1.901-inches on the 45mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌, offering substantially more screen real estate for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to display more relevant stats.

On Monday, 91Mobiles shared CAD images of the Apple Watch Pro's new design and also claimed the same 49mm case size. The images confirmed the inclusion of a new physical button on the left side of the redesigned watch, a completely flat screen, and a protrusion housing the Digital Crown and Side button.

2apple-watch-series-8-pro.jpeg

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman later corroborated the validity of the design shown in the CAD images. Gurman previously said that the Apple Watch "Pro" will feature a significantly larger display that will likely "be bigger than most wrists." It will also have a larger battery, along with a low-power mode, and a rugged titanium casing.

The new Pro model will sit at the top of the Apple Watch lineup, with pricing expected to fall in the $900 to $1,000 price bracket. Apple is expected to announce the all-new Apple Watch "Pro" during an event on Wednesday, September 7. The new high-end Apple Watch will join the new Apple Watch Series 8 and an updated, possibly more affordable Apple Watch SE in the lineup.

Are they’ve seriously going to have two models separated by only 1mm in size???

Well in a day we will know, but I think 49mm is likely just the start of Pro watches for Apple, and the lineup will expand in future years.
