A 38 mm round Watch has the same size face as a 49mm square Watch.
My point wasn’t that the watch is too large (though it probably is for some people), but that the reasoning that a 10% size increase doesn’t make a difference for anyone is wrong. Again, if that were the case, you could repeat that process indefinitely. In reality, there is a point at which the watch becomes too large for any given person, and that point may well be between 45 and 49 mm for some.

But this is not true. I never said you could increase the watch size indefinitely. Saying that a increase from 45mm-49mm isn't significant has no bearing on potential future increases. You decided on your own to infer that. And please quote me if you're going to be referring to me.

I don’t have a preference, I just find it funny how all over the place the naming is.
They seem to be more consistent than most of their competitors. FE, Lite, Ultra, +, A series, S series….

That’s a fair point. There are some people who say it wouldn’t fit anyone, or it’s too big for a wrist, The Mountain is the only person who can model it, etc. People will talk with their Apple Card and then we’ll know.

I don’t think an extra 5 mm would make any difference to my medium size wrist. I’ll let the Fashion Police judge me on that. Maybe 49 mm will be too big, but a 51 mm Watch is so much bigger and still sells like hotcakes.

We will find out when it’s actually a product and not a rumour.

I'd crack up laughing if it wasn't announced! 😂

Such a large display DESERVES a much better operating system.

If this Pro watch has the same watchOS as the Series 4 then 👎
History repeating itself. The iPad still has that issue to this day. Apple changed the name of the iPad version of iOS to iPadOS but my impression is that a lot of people (I'm one of them) would still, after all these years, say that the iPad hardware has run ahead of the software and iPadOS is still dangerously close to presenting the iPad as just a big iPhone and thus not taking full advantage of the hardware.

Jobs would have flipped out at them adding an extra button to the Apple Watch. I can see Ive not being happy at this and the recent parting of ways with Love From and Apple might be him distancing himself from what looks like the fall of product design within Apple and the rise of product marketing. Which effectively makes Apple no different from anyone else. Shame...
He also would have flipped out about adding the HDMI port back to the MacBook Pro… why start hating the watch before we’ve even seen it!?

Well, it’s not clear to me on what basis you argue that it doesn’t make a difference for that specific size range. In my view, it always makes a difference regardless of which size we’re starting from.

Regarding the quoting, I rarely look at user names. I respond to arguments, not to people, so I don’t remember who it was who said something two replies ago, and it mostly doesn’t matter to me.

I think the point is that it makes no discernible difference going from a 45mm to 49 mm. And that is subjective. And whilst it will be a bigger watch, it’s continuing in the same vein as the iPhone & iPad. The Watch started at 42mm, went to 44 & 45. If it goes to 49 mm that’s no big deal.

Personally, I have no need for an iPhone Max, or a 12.9” iPad, but the 47 or 49 mm Watch would be great.

I’m surprised so many here think it’s comically big. Have you guys never seen dudes in public wearing those humongous luxury watches? Seeing those every now and then in the subway.

So I absolutely don’t think the Pro is too oversized. This thing will have its target group.

(I’m sticking to my 42mm tho)
I always thought they looked dumb. Like clown shoes for your wrist, just screaming look at me I need attention. Regardless I can forgive a big smart watch a bit more but still not a fan. The whole point to a watch is the mobility of it.

Unfortunately these are mens watches.
Nonsense! My ankle is ready! 🤣

Also these ladies were my heroes when I was about 9:

Lol this was my avatar photo for a long time. I chose it back when the original Apple Watch was introduced. When I was a little girl I wanted an “electrocomp” so bad I made one out of a plastic box that had held nails or screws and some duct tape and other castoffs. Goodness that was close to 50 years ago! Their wrist devices shot lasers and did a lot of other things as well as radio calls if I remember correctly. It’s gotta be big to do all of that!

In all seriousness, while I’m way too small for this Watch, many women athletes are plenty tall and will do fine. Some fashion watches for women are oversized anyway.

I take my arm with me wherever I go. I think it’ll still be mobile. But if people hate big watches and love to make fun of those who do, then that’s their problem, not those who wear them.

Maybe stop looking at other people so much and worrying about what they are wearing. Kinda creepy if you ask me.

Apple fired Love From and hired invicta to do their product design. As the watch industry moves to smaller watches, apple is pushing for larger sizes and this will make the Apple Watch stick out even more like a soar thumb.

most circular watches are in the 42-38 range but the industry is moving to more vintage sizes at 40-36. Rectangular/square watches look even bigger on your wrist, something like a Cartier Santos comes in at 35mm and it wears great on most people.

So does it make a discernible difference to you or not? ;)

Sorry, I’m not trying to be adversarial, just pointing out that it’s totally valid if a difference that is welcomed by some doesn’t work for others.

In these discussions, people often try to establish absolutes. “It’s fine”, so anyone saying “it’s not fine” must be wrong. The reality is, it’s fine for some and not fine for others, there is no objective truth about it.

So it’s interesting to discuss and understand the different opinions, but it’s not constructive to argue that one side is wrong about their preferences and that an actual difference should not matter to them.

I mean, we’re lucky that the watch even comes in different sizes, and good for those who prefer the new larger size, and not as good for those who maybe would like a smaller “Pro” watch.

This is a competitor to the Garmin Enduro 2. The people who want these don't give a flying hoot that it looks big on their wrists. They want the functions. The battery lasts for days while the features go continuously not just periodically and it has solar charging. Serious athletes use Garmin. Long distance racers use Garmin. This must burn Apple's butt. So now they are going for it.
I personally don’t care for a bigger watch. Give me one with a different design. Like the Samsung watches.

So, if my approximate maths is correct, with a 49mm (diagonal) Square Watch, the sides are about 34.6 mm each. This means the area of a square Watch is about 1200 mm2.

The Garmin, which is 51mm round, has an area of about 2040 mm2 (πr2) using r=25.5

So the face of a 51mm Garmin is around 1.7 times the size of 49mm Apple Watch Pro (based on the rumours) and would look large.

a 49 mm square Watch is 1200 mm2
a 49 mm round Watch is 1885 mm2
a 51 mm round Watch is 2040 mm2

Basically a round 38mm Watch has the same size face as a 49mm square (Apple) Watch.

So people are basing their bias on a round Watch which has no resemblance in size to an Apple Watch. For what it’s worth.
Bad math, 49mm is height, not diagonal

I guess the professional sports market is interesting enough for Apple.

Unfortunately for us regular titanium users cannot still upload a custom watch face. Something that seams so simple to implement and would improve and personalize the experience … can’t be done.

With the rumored Apple Watch Pro expected to be larger than the Apple Watch Series 7 and the rest of the upcoming Series 8 models, leaker Sonny Dickson has shared new images offering an excellent size comparison of the new lineup.

1apple-watch-series-8-pro.jpeg

According to Dickson's sources, the Pro model will have a 49mm case size – larger than an earlier rumor suggesting between 47mm and 48mm. For comparison, the Apple Watch Series 7 is available in 41mm and 45mm case sizes, which is also expected to be mirrored in the standard Series 8 models with identical designs.

Combined with the flat display, a larger 49mm case size for the Apple Watch Pro could result in an even bigger screen size than the 1.99-inches initially reported, and could even turn out to be as large as 2 inches or more, easily making it the largest Apple Watch display yet seen.

Whatever the Apple Watch Pro display size turns out to be, it will compare to 1.691-inches on the 41mm and 1.901-inches on the 45mm ‌Apple Watch Series 7‌, offering substantially more screen real estate for athletes and fitness enthusiasts to display more relevant stats.

On Monday, 91Mobiles shared CAD images of the Apple Watch Pro's new design and also claimed the same 49mm case size. The images confirmed the inclusion of a new physical button on the left side of the redesigned watch, a completely flat screen, and a protrusion housing the Digital Crown and Side button.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman later corroborated the validity of the design shown in the CAD images. Gurman previously said that the Apple Watch "Pro" will feature a significantly larger display that will likely "be bigger than most wrists." It will also have a larger battery, along with a low-power mode, and a rugged titanium casing.

The new Pro model will sit at the top of the Apple Watch lineup, with pricing expected to fall in the $900 to $1,000 price bracket. Apple is expected to announce the all-new Apple Watch "Pro" during an event on Wednesday, September 7. The new high-end Apple Watch will join the new Apple Watch Series 8 and an updated, possibly more affordable Apple Watch SE in the lineup.

Lets see. I can order a 14 Pro Max for 1150, a Pro watch for 1000, or instead spend 2000 on a Mac Studio and keep my current watch and phone. Hmmmmmmm.
