Alleged Images of 5.4-inch 'iPhone 12' Display Panels Surface on Weibo

Looks like the same size notch as the iPhone 11 Pro I'm viewing this on.
I like the notch. Adds character.

Hmm, we have only experienced the notch on fairly large phones, so it stays the same size but the overall screen is smaller on the 5.4", it will be proportionally bigger. Personally, I don't care about the size of the notch, having no notch at all would however make a difference. As long as that extra space on the sides can fit the clock and battery percentage, I'm good. Everything else could just appear in control center.

I don't get the fuzz about 120 Hz displays either. You're not gaming on a phone on a competitive level so 60 Hz should be more than plenty. If you're annoyed by the UI animations where you have to wait for it to stop moving so you can read things (I mostly hate the one with the icons flying in from all directions when unlocking), just enable "reduce animations". Then everything fades in instead of sliding in and out. I guess 120Hz would help a little when scrolling quickly without text getting blurry, that's about it though.

I'll be getting an iPhone 12 Pro regardless. Glad I held onto my 7 Plus for almost 4 years. It'll be a great upgrade!

That's aspirational. I'm gonna try to run my iPhone 11 Pro as long as possible. Although those redesign rumors are titillating.

I like the iPhone notch as it is right now. It isn't trying to hide itself, it's there! Every time i see those phones with tiny water drop notches like those Oneplus phones, my first reaction is "that phone has dead pixels".

Either do a good notch like the iPhone X series or do no notch like the original iPhone series.

Is this one of those optical illusion tests?

i'm not too concerned with the size of the notch. if it's not gone completely, i don't care if it's 20% or 30% or 40% smaller.

I dont know. Apple is supposed to be convincing people to give them money and isnt making a great case from the totality of the rumors- the different sources in agreement that is

If you have an older phone, or XR/11, then yes its a huge upgrade to get OLED on the mid-range models.

But the "Pro" purchasers are mainly the tech nerds. If all you are offering is square sides (which most hide in a case), 5g (which is still non-existent in most places to even use), better camera yearly bump, and the usual yearly faster chip which I have never found wanting more in the A13, that's a tough sell. If the notch isnt getting smaller, no 120hz, and no change in battery what is being offered for another $999/1099+?

And WHO keeps asking for thinner phones? I get the A14 may be more power efficient but why not, you know, keep the 3969mah battery and ADD battery life? Why shrink the battery to get the same usage time; why is the same the standard? I just dont get it.

I see no compelling reason to upgrade this year after upgrading almost every year I can remember (maybe skipped the 5S and other "S" models). I have no use for a better camera not to use, 5g that wont be big for years still, and a processor bump that really isnt needed when you are already so fast and ahead of the pack.

Let's be real. Put a new Galaxy/Note next to an iPhone, toss out iOS vs Android and just talk looks and visual look of the hardware (not chips etc), and hardware-wise it gets destroyed. The Samsungs look like they're from 2020+ and iPhone still looks like 2017 just from appearances; the same iPhone X with very small visual tweaks. Not saying the iPhone isnt good hardware or isnt elegant in its own right, but that futuristic vibe pushing it into the future just isnt there with Apple. It feels like resting on laurels right now.

”We have kept the same notch, disabled 120hz, shrunk the battery, and not included the charging brick. It’s our least exciting iPhone offer ever, and we think you’re gonna love it!”

Sounds good to me...liking the notch, not wanting 120 Hz, but appreciating the better performance and lower power dissipation of the A14, and having a backside LIDAR sensor for AR applications.

It's a phone I'll be purchasing.

Honestly I don’t care if the notch’s size is unchanged for the 12 Pro Max. If 120Hz isn’t added this year that won’t bother me neither. The main reason I’m upgrading is to possibly switch from T-Mobile to Verizon, bigger size device, better camera, and a Qualcomm modem. My XS Max has been dropping calls several times a week for the last 16 months and I can’t wait to not deal with that anymore.

Hey Tim...why did you leave out more memory, faster/better/more efficient processor, better camera, better screen, better sound system, faster charging, oh and 5G, etc. You wanted us to be pleasantly surprised at all the tech packed into the phone without a price increase?

That's only the display, not the whole phone. Of course, it will look smaller without the rest of the phone attached. 🤷‍♂️
Agreed, the bezel is the layer above the display, it’s the top case. This gives us no indication of bezel size

I’d really like a 5.4” Pro, the X/XS/11 Pro format is already too big IMHO and reachability is clunky without a home button

As for the notch, it sacrifices way too real estate and the sooner it’s minimised, the better

Nobody has given a meaningful answer to why we even need the notch. Just give the phone a small forehead, put all relevant sensors in there and keep the screen an unbroken rounded rectangle. It’s got to be easier to manufacture, simplifies the software, and will enable more future sensors in that space.

It’s quite simple. Here at Apple, we will never advertise the amount of RAM in our phones. It will take back and forth debate and competing tear down videos to figure that out, just as it has always been. We also will mention 5G, but we don’t want you to rage when you realize just how bad the now-smaller battery drains while using it.

Of course it has a better camera! That’s really the only leg we can stand on year after year. The display? Gorgeous. We think you’re gonna love it. It will cause just a small increase in battery usage though. You know, the smaller battery I mentioned? Faster charging, yes. You’ll need to purchase that 18w adapter on your own though!

We know you’ll love this new iPhone, starting at $749 for the iPhone 12, $1099 for the iPhone 12 Pro, and $1199 for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Pre-orders start in late October (we think) and will be available in incredibly small quantities just before Christmas.

Not true. This has been debated (hotly) since the iphone 10 across many, many threads. You pick your poison with regards to where the electronics are. Either in an ugly forehead or a more graceful notch. As far as I know, no other phone manufacturer has been able to come up with a satisfactory solution to a full fledged face-id type of authentication, without some compromise that 100% of the people feel is a good solution.

As far as ease of manufacturing, that is not my concern.

And we at Apple forgot to add, don't worry about the battery drain. 5G is mostly vaporware. And that charger. Our closest competitor is following our lead. First with the headphone jack removal and now the charging brick. Courage, my friend, courage.

Let’s wait and see if Apple truly delivers a near bezel-less design. Of course compared to the current iPhone 11, it’ll look downright thin.

The non-Pro models were never going to get 120hz so any clamouring against the 5.4” size for not including them is silly

I’m most excited about the thinner bezels these phones allegedly have

I disagree that the notch is graceful. They had to break up the top bar and reduce the amount of information it has space to display - on my iPad, I get time, full date, and more indicators. The hit area for “double tap to scroll up” is smaller. They had to employ software tricks so that apps don’t accidentally bleed into that space (and some still do). If the size of the notch keeps changing, they have to manage that in software. The one thing it briefly achieved was being unique, but many Android OEMs immediately copied it in some form anyway.
