Sure you can, hardware is a separate matter. Hardware design has nothing to do with what OS it runs; you can slap any OS on any hardware design. And one cant assume owning an iPhone means in the ecosystem or owns any other Apple products where that matters as Android is 100 times better and closer to iOs fluid than it was even 5 years ago.
Why does the new Galaxy/Note line look like its sleek from the future and the iphone still looks like it did from 2017 with the George Jefferson hairline notch? S8 in 2017 to S20 in 2020.

In 3 years, 4 model lines (X, XS, 11, and 12) if this year holds the same, worth $1 trillion, you're telling me they cant figure out how to shrink a notch not even 1mm? But Samsung can go from big forehead and chin to basically nothing.
Posting the X to 11 Pro is really useless as you wouldn't be able to tell the difference even- exactly the same look.
Or is it FAR more likely they know customers will buy anything they put out so stay the course of incremental upgrades and sell people the same phone for $999/1099 every year with just enough to make them want to upgrade?
At one time Apple innovated the market; original iPhone, multitouch, software keyboards that were actually usable on a capacitive display, iPad, etc. Not just recycled ideas and technologies (albeit maybe refined) by others.
Yea forgot about how they are still turtling along at 7.5W wireless but expect to go full wireless.
Samsung doesn’t have a full fledged Face ID that rivals Apples’. So this isn’t an apples to apples comparison.
Yes hardware is a separate matter but why do you think these hardware features on android aren’t enough for IOS users? SOFTWARE is why
In terms of the look and the body yes the iPhone has the notch but the galaxy phones still have a punch hole. Both notches but not as in your face and the notch is needed for the most secure unlock in the business
It still has more of a bottom chin to the current iPhone line and with rumours of a iPhone 12 pro with far less bezels than on previous models and a smaller notch is the Galaxy phones much better in terms of future designs? Not really
Sure android is very smooth and far better than in the past but for certain users the OS still has issues that matter for phone users. I could never use it as my daily driver due to notifications not arriving on time or very late or worse having them all arrive when you unlock the phone. That’s a big issue
Also why are you saying if Samsung can go to a small punch hole why is it an issue for apple? Face ID is why. If Face ID wasn’t so huge for apple this notch wouldn’t exist.
Same answer to both comments- decisions and choices. Apple made the choice knowing there was no path around the notch. At that time under screen cameras we a blip on the radar. I dont feel bad for them now that they got themselves into a corner thinking the notch was transitional and its not working out that way. And Apple being Apple will never backtrack and admit they were wrong- not that the face ID is bad, it works pretty well. But affecting the overall device design scheme
And that is irrespective of the pandemic making Face ID all but useless with a mask, and maybe for years to come of this. If it kicks you to your PIN then what good is biometrics at all to tout?
And less bezel? Meh. That's like saying you would rather have a notch on the iPad rather than the curret bezel. 99% of people would disagree there. This "no bezel" fad has no basis in reality that it affects the user experience whether it is .5mm, .9mm, 1.2mm etc. Small is small at some point. If you are talking about .1-.2mm less bezel than last year, cmon man....
The single punch hole is FAR FAR smaller than the notch, what, at least 1/4 of the size? (easily fit 4 punches in the current notch is my guess if not 5-6). It certainly affects landscape use even if apps have adapted to portrait use around it. The notch being gone would make a FAR different immersive experience than a .1 or .2mm less bezel difference.
The people saying punches are worse, I mean LOL. The center punch hole on the S20 is in the same spot as our earpiece/notch but takes 1/4-1/5 (or less) of the space side to side? How is that "worse?" That's a losing argument.
Face ID isnt even a great argument anymore in current times; 99.9% of the time unless home I have to use a PIN anyway. It defeats the whole argument of notches and IR scanners, etc.
I wouldn’t feel bad for apple either. They are selling far more phones with this notch than android wiry the punch hole so clearly people aren’t bothered enough to not buy the phone
Face ID works very well and is the most method of unlocking that also can use for bank/payment methods as well.
Let’s face it until under the display cameras exist it’s all the same to me. Notch or punch hole.
Slimmer bezels are always welcome so if it’s true and it happens on the 12 pro that’s fine with me as it’s more screen in the same body.
I don’t think the difference in style from Samsung flagships are much better than apples new phones. Me personally iPhone 12 design with flat screen looks far better than curved
I'll agree on the flat screen never would but super curved one. I dont think they are using that curved of glass anymore though?
I'll disagree on Face ID. The world we are living in now isnt going away anytime soon- vaccine or not- it wont be 100% effective (few are, the flu is something like 40-60% effective) and 100% of people wont get it, so the virus isnt going anywhere. And Face ID is all but useless with masks kicking you to your PIN. Unless you stay home 24/7 I suppose.
I don't know about your current situation, but most people still live their lives without masks most of their time. I mean, unless you work as a cashier, cleaner, construction worker, etc who needs to be outside to work, you don't normally wear masks when working. If I'm supposed to work with mask on all the time, I'd just keep my phone unlocked and get insurance from my carrier to replace the phone if lost.Same answer to both comments- decisions and choices. Get your point totally but where are you using your phone out in public to be an issue with a mask on? You talking for train/plane journeys? For payment I always use apple watch so it’s never an issue but I get everybody has different use cases

I work at home these days, and still prefer Face ID. Yes, it's inconvenient when I go shopping at Costco or Krogers or have to go to lab wearing a mask, but that's just a few hours a week.
I won't argue with the design point. Each person has a preference. I think the single punch hole looks OK, but the notch isn't too bad either. Both options are compromises. I just prefer Face ID to Touch ID.
Post ignores the fact the Samsung does not have a full-fledged face id equivalent and under screen cameras are still a blip on the radar. And has been said don't feel bad about Apple, not about anyone who proclaims they are not buying an iphone because of the notch....Apple doesn't need their business. But I disagree about Apple admitting they are wrong. There just isn't any good design choices, imo, that will satisfy Apple. An ugly chin or forehead...no thanks.Same answer to both comments- decisions and choices. Apple made the choice knowing there was no path around the notch. And this is from someone who, absent a few months trial twice with Android years ago (once in 2011-2012 and again in 2014 on a Galaxy S5), has owned nearly almost iPhone since the 3GS.
Yeah the Qualcomm modem is a selling point. But don’t forget Apple has a history of screwing up other elements that impact call quality. My and my husband’s 7 Plus had bad mics that made calls almost impossible. That was the year I made my HTC 10 my daily driver for several months. They screw up antenna design.Honestly I don’t care if the notch’s size is unchanged for the 12 Pro Max. If 120Hz isn’t added this year that won’t bother me neither. The main reason I’m upgrading is to possibly switch from T-Mobile to Verizon, bigger size device, better camera, and a Qualcomm modem. My XS Max has been dropping calls several times a week for the last 16 months and I can’t wait to not deal with that anymore.
I don't know you must have had a defective max. I acquired my max in November of 2018. No issues at all. Call quality is good etc. The threads about low signal quality, yes I still have that, but it doesn't seem to impact download speed or connecting to lte.Yeah the Qualcomm modem is a selling point. My husband’s XS Max was a nightmare. I feel for you if you’ve stuck it out this long with yours. My XS Max that I had for only a few days couldn’t connect to WiFi properly.
His 11 Pro Max and mine have been good. Not to the level of my Samsung s20, but solid. My SE is also pretty good.
I probably did. My husband stuck with his for a year and he got terrible connectivity at his office and his commute. The 11 Pro Max was a big improvement.I don't know you must have had a defective max. I acquired my max in November of 2018. No issues at all. No, it’s not. You can tap the time, status indicators, or even most of the notch itself (thanks to the imprecision of the fingertip) along with the area immediately underneath. Combined, the hit area is substantially larger than the status bar on notchless iPhones. The hit area for “double tap to scroll up” is smaller.
Auto Layout is not “software tricks.” If an app is still having issues with extending outside the safe area three years after the safe area API was introduced in iOS 11, its developers seriously need to learn the basics of Auto Layout. It’s only been around and heavily pushed by Apple for nearly a decade now because it allows apps to easily adapt to changes like this. They had to employ software tricks so that apps don’t accidentally bleed into that space (and some still do).
Apple does, but that’s not exactly rocket science for them as they know the exact design specifications. Developers don’t have to do anything at this point if they’re using Auto Layout, which they absolutely should be.If the size of the notch keeps changing, they have to manage that in software.
I also could be I live in an area which is very saturated NY Metro area, so maybe there are less fringe areas. As far as the 11, anecdotally I remember apple redesigned the antenna and from reading the forums it seems to have made a difference.I probably did. My husband stuck with his for a year and he got terrible connectivity at his office and his commute. The 11 Pro Max was a big improvement.

Looks nice, but I prefer having FaceID.OnePlus 7T notch is the most aesthetic notch of all. I find Punch hole even more offensive than notch.
