They could easily design the iPhone without the notch as seen here:

lol you do realize you’re showing a photoshopped iPad right? The reason the iPad doesn’t have the notch is because it’s a MUCH BIGGER device and has a higher bezel tolerance than the phones do. Unless we go back to .5” bezels around the iPhone or they manage to shrink those components down significantly more (which increases manufacturing costs), the notch on the phone isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

That rectangle on the side—is that part of the antenna? It looks incredibly similar to the thing on the iPad Pro that I always presumed was a magnet for the Pencil.

the iPhone notch is iconic nowadays though. I don't care how much screen to body ratio another competitor has--most people see the notch from the front and its automatically an iPhone to them.

Iconic? I don't think so. It's ugly af, but at this time necessary. I hope they shrink or remove so we can get status bar back.

Right now I gotta use jailbreak to do this

Super simple, except it’s not. They can’t just magically shrink the Face ID components to fit inside a 1-2 mm bezel. Good lord.
No no, you don't understand, he said "easily." This means he thoroughly understands every component involved and the tolerance each one needs between the screen and edge of the device. And it's easy!

I hope they’re right that the new design is coming to all, not just the Pro. I want the smallest possible, but I love the iPad Pro design.

if you have to ask this, then you don’t understand its core existence in the first place. It houses over eight separate components for the iPhone.

Looking at the array of sensors it makes sense why it is such a "large" notch, however I wonder if Apple decides to go with a flat bezel like on the iPad Pro, I sense that they could fit a lot of those smaller sensors directly on the bezels. I'm referring to the proximity sensor, flood illuminator (2.80 x 2.40mm), microphone, ambient light sensor, speaker etc.

Essentially everything except the 3 largest ones: infrared camera, main camera and dot projector. It would be tough to do, but if anyone can do it, it's usually Apple.

Will buy because the squared edges look so much better and give the 11 Pro to someone else in my family.

But oh how I dream of an in-display TouchID that gets rid of this damn notch...

Since most people prefer big phones, seems unlikely.

Once again, Apple has never offered flagship specs across different sized phones except for when the original SE matched the 6S specs (even then there was a significant time delay). Customers have always had to buy a bigger phone to get the best specs, which does not necessarily mean customers would choose the larger size if they didn't have to get the best specs.

but complaining about their work is. Way easier to complain. I think it looks awesome so far and the kicker is they always look better when released.
It still resembles older designs that were no longer desirable (for them).

they certainly could easily design that.

whether or not the technology exists in components that are small enough to fit in that space to improve on Or deliver at the very least the Same quality specs we have today, at a price that is affordable for both Apple and their business model, which includes the consumer, is a completely different discussion however.

and based on what a few different leakers have shared, it is not possible at present

I wonder what the leather cases will be like. I guess the edges of the case will have to be square instead of rounded. Hmm.

this is an old CAD, from Dec 2019 actually

The most recent renderings do not have that per multiple leakers

probably similar to iPhone 5/5s/SE OG leather cases with the modern buttons on the case instead of pressing down on the leather (pre-iPhone 7 leather cases)
