That would be the smart connector like the iPad. In the leaked CAD design it’s exactly the same size.

Indeed, I couldn't remember the exact function, but weren't there conflicting rumours as to whether this would actually materialise in this version?
I can only assume it will double down as a charger in some grim portless future.

Why are leaks always horrible quality? Where are the 4K leaks? It’s really hard to tell, but I don’t see a cutout for lightning port. It also seems awkward that the smart connector and the sim are not centered on the sides.

Because as a Foxconn employee working in the production area, you don’t want to get caught. You’re sneaking the chassis into the washroom or the parking lot for a quick video before anyone knows it’s missing. Sorry the video isn’t 4K filmed using a RED camera with production lighting.

The shiny edges make it look generic/cheap/plastic. Come on, Apple....

Is this the first iPhone Apple would have designed since Ive left?

People forget that when the 4 was made all phones were plastic including the 3GS. When the 4 was announced it blew everyone away because it was stainless steel and glass. And it was even better when it was held. Man what an iconic design. I can’t wait for the 12!
The 4 was not stainless steel, it was aluminum, just like the original iPhone. I’m surprised they went with plastic after the original iPhone. I remember my friends iPhones 3G/3GS were all scratched and cracking while my original iPhone was intact.

iPhone 4 features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, Apple’s A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time—in a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Back to the flat edges is a horrible mistake. The frames on the square edged iPhones always tended to get bent in really easy when dropped. Meaning they would have to be dremmeled out to fit a new screen in if you broke it. Never had to do that with the 6 or above because the curved edge absorbed a lot of the shock and the frame didn't warp.

I would like to gently remind you that the iPhone 12 Pro’s frame will be made of stainless steel which is a lot harder than the aluminium frame of the iPhone 5 and 5s. I doubt there will be any warping issues just because of one drop on the corner. But unfortunately the same can’t be said for the iPhone 12 non-Pro models.

Just don’t drop it then 🤷‍♂️ I’ve never damaged or broken one in 10 years.

Depends what grade of aluminium is used.If it’s aircraft grade like the 6S/6S Plus were,it should be a bit more durable.

Looks like an iPhone alright. iPhone announcements don’t hit like they used to. Diminishing returns are a B.

You’re probably thinking about the 5 and 5s because those phones were aluminum which is very mailable. every little thing would nick it and its chamfered edges. But I don’t remember having this issue with the 4 that had a stainless steel frame, which is a much harder metal

That camera layout is really bothering me.

The iPhone X/XS layout looks astronomically better.
If this is truly the design I will definitely be going with a dark color so that the lenses can blend in better, and I’ve been going with white since the 6 came out. The 5 black holes on the white background look terrible, the camera array can definitely use a black glass cover a la iPhone X

As someone who loves the white color, I do wish that the silver would actually have a white back versus the pearly color it is today. They do this for the lower end models without the frosted glass. Wish they’d do this for the Pro models.

It really is an eye sore.

If this is real I’ll eat my hat. 🧢

Come on people, Apple wouldn’t release anything that looks so horrid. This is nothing more than a dummy model designed to look like ***** on purpose.
