They both require the same amount of RAM. In a perfect world, where Android roams, the tablet should get more RAM.

iOS is nice but 2014 should actually be the LAST year they put 2GB in a phone and 3 in the iPad. No iOS OEM's means no competition. They have zero incentive to give us what we want. We are nothing to them.

You say they should have the same amount of RAM then contradict yourself next sentence?

I don't know the nitty gritty of it but I do know that my Dad's iPad air suffers from the reloading tabs issue that everyone talks about much more than my 5S.

1GB of Ram is definitely an issue. Those who say otherwise say that to not feel disappointed.

I mean why use a 64 bit SoC and use one lousy gig of ram? And with the increased ppi games are gonna be bigger and all. If this is true plus the price increase then apple really thinks their fans are idiots.

The only legitimate reason where they can keep 1GB is if it is LPDDR4, which provides greater performance and a lower power draw than the current LPDDR3 used.

If Apple is a trailblazer like with their performance A processors, this may happen.

Geekbench - the top colour

When I run Geekbench on my 4S, both the results and the main screen have white text for the SIM/Wifi/Battery headings. In the pictures posted, the top text is black in the first screen and white in the second.

Anybody know the reason for that?

Sorry, but anyone who even attempts to defend Apple giving us 1GB RAM are fighting a losing battle.

Absurdity.

While better specs are always desired, the vast majority of people never experience any issues whatsoever related to lack of RAM, yet they still want more just because. . .why? A completely different OS needs that much? In fact, the only complaints I have ever seen about RAM is from Safari and multiple open pages. I can't think of one other app that has an issue with RAM (and my current iOS app count is 1,079 owned and tried over the years) - because devs know that the iPhone has 1GB of RAM and they write their apps accordingly. But, like people who demand high pixel counts on their cameras, even though they never see the difference, tech suffers the same "feature want, even if not needed" syndrome.

1GB of RAM is enough until its not enough. The vast majority haven't reached "not enough" yet.

iPad is worse the the iPhone, but it happens on both. Much more annoying on the iPad with only 2-3 tabs open... Still hoping for a software fix, but appears to be a RAM bottleneck.

Let see. But still, I just don't understand why they can't increase the Ram for a 64 bit SoC, it doesn't make any sense. And I think this is real because the iPad air, as mentioned many times here, suffers from ram issues. I'm sure apple was aware of that before it launched and they still ran with it. So 1gig of ram is highly likely for the iphone 6. It's a shame cause this is the device they should go all out for. Lets hope for DDR4 but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Safari is the problem and the app I use the most on the iPad. I could care less about a 64-bit processor. I'd much prefer my Safari to work properly and not reload when using only 2-3 tabs.

Let's not forget what Apple has been providing us all these years, and I'm also talking about MacBooks...4GB of RAM on a laptop that's supposed to serve as a main computer to some people. And you know what?...people are happy with them still.

With the emergence of better memory management in Mavericks, things actually get better. IOS 8, in my mind, should manage memory more efficiently than IOS 7.

People will not be doing 3D animation on these machines! The average person will not have 5 or more tabs open in Safari or 5 application used at the same time.

I do believe, we will still have an awesome experience with iPhone 6. I am happy that I get to enjoy a bigger screen this time around and not worry about what's inside as I always did. So let's not panic folks!

Disappointing with 1 GB RAM, but not surprising.

Only 100 MHz speed bump over the A7 tells me the A8 is all about battery efficiency rather than more speed.

Or it could be simply a rebadged A7 =X. The 4.7" seems like a 5S with a cosmetic makeover. Let's hope for surprises!

We keep on forgetting that with Apple tightly controlling both the hardware and software for the iPhone, this results in very tight software code in iOS. As such, there may not be a need to go to 2 GB of RAM, especially if iOS 8.0 allows for using the flash memory storage as a form of "virtual RAM" to offload unneeded running code on an as-needed basis.

The A8 SoC on the new iPad Air and mini, though, may have 2 GB of RAM to allow running more than one app side-by-side on the larger screens of the iPad.

1GB of RAM is already perfect for iPhone performance.

Android phones need more memory because the OEMs bloat the OS up with all their overlays and modifications.

But yeah nobody needs more actual RAM in an iOS device.

As you don't have 1GB of RAM, and they Devs don't have more than 1GB of RAM to use, how do you know that 1GB of RAM is enough?

Until you had say 2GB, and the devs had 2GB to use, and show what could be done with the extra space how can you know.

You can't say something is not needed, until you had had that thing and can then look back.

Yes I am aware of that just trying to make the quoted poster see there is a difference between the iPad and iPhone

My iPhone 5 has one gig of ram. What is the argument for keeping only one gig of ram? Does 2 gigs make it use the battery faster? When a person is asked to pay more for a device than they expect to get more for it. Especially when apple gets the hardware cheaper than anyone else!

Unless two gigs of ram cripples the device in some way -and it may - than they should have put two gigs of ram in it and called it a day. Would I still buy it? Yep, but I could use a larger screened phone for work, and I don't like carrying around an iPad.

Although i will reserve judgement on the issue until there are real world tests, I think people have the right to gripe about the rumor. Many of us will also praise all the other benefits of the phone as well, and IOS 8.

ugh my computer science and android friends will **** me to death making fun of the 1GB ram for months to come lol

Funny, you'd think a "computer science" person would value results over a simple spec #. I'd be more likely to make fun of a device with 8 cores and 3 GB of RAM that still lags in the default web browser.

For me personally, I don't think the idea of 1GB is that big of a deal (on a phone, but definitely need higher on ipad). However, it's charging a premium price and giving 1GB 3 years in a row. Thinking it like that makes it idea of a 1GB this time around seem ridiculous. I am praying for the 5.5 to be the "true" premium upgrade.

I’ll be using my phone to shoot photos of my beautiful family, surf and track events, collaborate, communicate, manage servers, track training progress, entertain, educate, write, generate significant cash-flow, without much regard to the specs.

They’ll be using their phones too, umm, use as specs to post on message boards.

“Hey dudes, check it out *giggle* I’m trolling on MacRumors *snort*”

I wouldn’t sweat it. :)

Surprised by the amount of fanboys in here that likes to reload tabs and falls for Apples marketing. Uuh we optimised it to use so little ram. ********. I have had android phones/tablets with 1 gb ram loading several more tabs without refreshing them. Heck, even my lumia 520 with 512 mb ram handles more tabs than my iPhone 5s and retina mini. Ram optimised iOS? Hell no.

Good luck with 1 gb ram and iOS 9 next year. You will be drooling over the 6s with 2gb ram and stuck with your 2 year contract.

Just love everyone here bashing Android for memory usage. If you want to compare, compare the iPhone to the Nexus line of devices. No trash to bog it down, etc. My Nexus 5 isn't loaded down with crap from any OEM/carrier just as the iPhone would be and it runs perfectly. I never experience a slowdown with it, my wife's Moto X is the same way. Unlocked, no carrier bloat, runs perfectly.

Apple could have easily put in 2GB of RAM, the cost is not even an issue .. yet they want you to buy a "premium" device without premium specs. And while specs aren't the end all be all at any length, it sure still is nice to have some more memory for applications to use.
