Maybe it should have remained blurred...

There are much better ways to go about "the future" than to drop a standard port that is near-universally used.
You probably said that when apple dropped the floppy and CD drive? Those were universally used too.
Everything is wireless now, why is the headphone jack an exception?

I could live with this. And a wide range colours is also very welcome.
Hope they put a lightning to 3.5 mm headphone jack in the box.

I hope they don't. It's just another fiddly bit that is easily lost. But then I hope they dont go forward with the blunder of nuking the headphone jack at all.

When Apple deleted the floppy, optical media where dropping rapidly in price. When the optical drive was removed from Macs the internet had already displaced optical media as delivery medium.
The obvious replacement for connected earphones, is bluetooth. The price on this is not really the issue. There are cheap BT accessories. But it will be a price premium over passive headphone equivalents for brands like Sony, JBL and yes Beats.
And that is one more battery that can run down, one more hassle of pairing devices. But I suppose you have never had a problem with BT devices forgetting they were paired.

I'm normally a huge Apple fanboy. But this is one of those decisions along with taking RAID away from Disk Utility that has me scratching my head. It's like there is no direction, just random movements.

RIP Headphone jack.
Coming up next: Beats Lightning. Only 199$ and lots of bass!!!
dont forget that when apple removed the floppy disk, others did the same, same with cd rom..
so you can go to android but only for 1-2 years
As STJULS pointed out: The floppy drive was obsolete and technologically inadequate, when Apple decided to dump it. Solely to reduce build costs on the new iMac though, one must keep in mind! And the Android bashing is off: I am happy for every single that sells me a device that incorporates industry standard ports...

if apple will not remove the 3.5 jack nobody will, and we are stuck with this old and no longer quality headphones for this time.
If you refer to the white iPhone earplugs that probably cost Apple less than 50 cent to mass produce as "quality headphones" then yes, you might be right. Thanks lord, people will no longer be able to use these earplugs: That's in fact the only positive aspect of omitting an industrial standard that I did not yet think of. Should you ever consider buying non-Apple branded headphones, I suggest buying some that cost more than 20$. There are PLENTY of high quality ones. You can even use them for your home stereo, home computer, Notebook or whatever you like to listen to music without hurting your ears or frontal cortex... Oh wait... Lightning only - headphones?

For everyone saying you can't fit the speaker above the camera, take a look at the internals of the iPhone 6's speaker:

The speaker is already weirdly shaped in some areas, so I think it's actually pretty easy to imagine a piece that's shaped to fit around the camera.

If they ditch the 3.5mm jack then I will expect a free adapter (not £25.00) for my upgrade to iPhone 7 in September.
To be used with my 10 year old lifetime guarantee 3.5mm Koss Porta Pro's
I will also seriously worry about the hundreds of millions (billions?) of 3.5mm headphones in circulation that apple will be alienating their owners from buying an iPhone 7.
I don't think Koss's lifetime guarantee covers this, but I hope for your sake that you're right and Koss sends you a free adapter.

So now you have to carry an adaptor everywhere that will extend the length of your phone in your pocket? Not very innovative and a clumsy solution for something that isn't a problem.
I don't have to carry an adapter. Anyone who says different is a dirty liar.

This is making more sense now. They're not going to change the form factor, but they're going to go IPod touch and go for a range of colors. I could see that being a big hit.

Camera + flash orientation looks a lot better too:

I'm not a fan of that vertical camera and LED flash arrangement. Looks very . . . googley or androidy.

And that's a bad thing? Apple could take a few pointers from Samsung on how to build a quality phone in 2016.

Former Apple iPhone owner, btw. Now a very happy galaxy s7 guy.

Everyone going berserk over the removal of the headphone jack. Can I get a bookie and place a bet on saying Apple will include a lightning adapter dongle for it?

Apple isn't the best at 'giving' us stuff, but I can see this happening

One of the most advanced phone brands in the world may finally gain stereo speakers!

Yawn. who really listens to music out of phone speakers anyway? make iOS and the apple music app better. In particular downloading my entire playlist to the phone and not stoping half way through. annoying.
They're useful for games or for showing videos to others. The Gameboy line had a mono speaker (and stereo headphones) all the way up to the DS in 2004 when they added stereo speakers with an optional faux-surround effect. Probably time Apple caught up if they're interested in chasing the gaming market.

I dunno. For me, too many colour choices makes a product look cheap. I much prefer it when there's just one model and one colour. It feels more special.

EDIT: Actually, it's not so bad for devices like the iPod, but for iPhones and MacBooks, it just doesn't feel right IMO. Maybe it's just me. :/
